“The team developed a seamless process, reducing the additional burden on Indigenous students by repurposing existing automated processes in the residence management system, StarRez.”

Last year, a team from Humber Residence and Indigenous Education and Engagement collaborated to reimagine the residence application for self-identified Indigenous learners in alignment with Humber's strategic goal of providing an accessible environment where Indigenous students can thrive.
The end result was greater equity in applying to live on campus, a seamless process that reduced additional burdens on some Indigenous learners, and the option of choosing another Indigenous student as a roommate.
This team found new paths to the same end by repurposing existing automated processes to streamline ‘exceptions’ that had previously been addressed outside of the formal application process, so these exceptions became the norms. These changes resulted in students having a more positive experience and staff having less manual work while providing services and meeting learners' needs.
