An assembly of faculty, support staff, students, and administrators, Humber Polytechnic Council (HPC) is Humber’s collective employee voice, making suggestions to Humber Polytechnic’s President as it relates to long and short‐term institutional priorities.

At its second meeting of the academic year, Humber Polytechnic Council (HPC) welcomed presentations on Humber’s employee engagement survey, 2024-25 budget and financial update, and new sustainability vision and action plan.

HUMBER EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT SURVEY

Cheryl Pinto, Manager, Employee Engagement & Learning and Julia Pavlov, Talent Development Analyst

Humber launched an employee engagement survey in March 2024. It was conducted by McLean & Company to ensure data confidentiality and objectivity. 5,768 Humber and University of Guelph-Humber full-time and part-time administrative, support, and academic staff, and work study student were surveyed, with 2,202 (38 per cent) responding. Overall, Humber performed slightly better than McLean & Company’s benchmark.

The overall results were presented to HPC, with thematic areas divided into four categories:

  1. Improve: Areas in need of improvement include company potential, department leadership, and employee growth and development
  2. Evaluate: Areas Humber is working on and could benefit from further focus include department collaboration, recognition, work-life balance, total compensation, and executive leadership.
  3. Leverage: Areas to be built on include employee empowerment, culture, inclusion, and working environment.
  4. Maintain: Areas where Humber is excelling include coworker and manager relationships.

Action plans are currently being developed by the various departments focused on the Improve category relative to their areas.

2024-25 BUDGET & FINANCIAL UPDATE

Sanjay Gandhi, Director, Financial Planning

HPC was reminded of the context for this financial update:  Earlier this year, the federal government introduced key changes to the student visa program, placing a hard cap on international enrolment. Additionally, there have been no changes to the Tuition Fee framework, meaning that Humber cannot increase tuition, despite increasing needs for student support systems.

Humber’s 24/25 enrolment is forecasted at 65,927 (36,913 domestic; 29,014 International). The forecasted revenue excess over expenses is projected at $11 million, $1 million over what was budgeted.

HUMBER’S NEW SUSTAINABILITY VISION & ACTION PLAN

Lindsay Walker, Director, Office of Sustainability

Humber is in the process of developing its new sustainability vision and action plan. Through several consultation sessions and an online form, 750 people engaged in the plan’s development. A draft plan was tabled with HPC for their input.

The working vision for the new plan is Be the climate action blueprint for the world. To realize this vision, four draft focus areas are proposed:

  1. Educate: Dynamic, forward-thinking programs and courses that empower every graduate to shape a more sustainable world.
  2. Lead: Provide global leadership in sustainable campus development, transforming Humber into a model of environmental sustainability.
  3. Engage: Deepen a sustainability culture that translates knowledge into action for a more resilient future.
  4. Drive: Embed sustainability into the foundations of Humber’s institutional policy, structures, and decision-making to achieve our institutional goals.

Specific actions were shared relative to each focus area. To track Humber’s progress, the plan aligns with the Sustainability Tracking and Assessment Rating System (STARS) – which identifies the key components of a leading sustainable post-secondary institution.

NEXT HPC MEETING The next Humber Polytechnic Council meeting will be held in person on November 21, 2024.

We are stepping up to the challenge that the climate crisis poses by accelerating our net-zero target by more than two decades.

In 2029, Humber Polytechnic will be among the first institutions in Canada to reach net zero—proving that bold goals, paired with concrete actions, can drive transformative change. There are not many Canadian institutions taking on decarbonization at this pace and scale, and we hope our work will inspire change far beyond Humber’s campuses.

Our commitment to net-zero was established in the 2022 Climate Action Plan, that charted the course to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. We are now fast-tracking projects to help us reach the accelerated goal in 2029.

Innovative Learning would like to invite you to participate in a research study titled “Bridging the Gap: Investigating the Role of GenAI in Building a Culture of Effective Assessment" from November 11 to December 9. This study is conducted by Laura Facciolo (Project Lead), Dempsey Cruz, and Adam Palczewski (Co-Investigators).

The researchers have developed an OpenAI-powered tool (named “Bloom”) designed to support instructors in selecting educational technologies that align with assessment needs based on relevant learning outcomes. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the extent to which customized generative artificial intelligence (genAI) tools like “Bloom” can support and improve pedagogically grounded uses of educational technologies (edtech) for assessment purposes, which can have positive impacts on student engagement, grade performance, and learning outcomes (Biggs, 2014). The findings of this study will support the improvement of this AI solutions, as well as additional faculty support strategies.

Who can participate? All faculty members. Both full-time and non-full-time faculty are welcome to share their insights.

When can I participate? The testing period will run from November 11 to December 9.

Why participate? Your input will contribute to broader systemic changes in teaching and learning practices at Humber, encouraging an integrated approach to edtech and assessment design.

If you have any questions, please contact Simranjeet Singh at simranjeet.singh2@humber.ca or Laura Facciolo at laura.facciolo@humber.ca.

To participate, complete the pre-survey.

These are the highlights of this month’s new and improved features in Blackboard Ultra that will be live Thursday, November 7. The most relevant updates are related to four key areas:

  1. Instructional Design
  2. Tests and Assignments
  3. Communication and Collaboration
  4. Learner progression and personalized experience

Review the full details of this month's updates

Instructional Design

Improvement to Resizing Blocks in Documents

To help with resizing blocks in the Content Designer in an Ultra document, Anthology has modified the resize handle so that instructors can resize a block by selecting the vertical edge of a block. This is what this looks like in the Content Designer:

The purple resize handle is highlighted between an image and a knowledge check to demonstrate how the zone the handle functions in

Empty State Indicator for Documents

Anthology has added an empty state indicator to content blocks in Documents. If a content block is empty, some text displays to tell instructors to select the block to add content. The empty state indicator doesn’t display outside of the edit mode.

Tests & Assignments

Print Tests with questions from Question Pools and other improvements

Instructors can now print tests that include questions from Question Pools. Blackboard will generate a different version of the answer key and test each time a test is printed when the test:

  • uses randomized questions or answer options
  • includes Question Pools

Instructors can also use the print option to save the answer key and test as a PDF.

Improved performance for assignment file submissions for Students

Working on assignments can be a stressful experience for students. When submitting their work, students need assurance that their files have been successfully attached, received, and stored by Blackboard. They also need to be informed if there is an issue with their submission. In this release, Blackboard has made architectural improvements to mitigate against file corruption and to ensure files are correctly attached during uploads. These updates include:

  • Managing Multiple File Uploads: To prevent issues when uploading multiple files, students will now be required to wait for the first upload to completely before attaching additional files.
  • File Size Limit Notification: A modal will display a message if a file exceeds the permitted size limit.
  • Corrupted File Alerts: In the unlikely event of a student attempts to submit a corrupted file, a modal will notify them of the issue, and the system will alert the instructor.

Communication & Collaboration

Indentations Added to Discussions

To better distinguish between responses and replies, Anthology has added indentation, which looks like the following:

Learner Progression & Personalized Experience

Download Option for Student Activity Log

Instructors and administrators can review the Student Activity Log to review a student's activity in the course, including logging into a course, replying to discussions, submitting assessments, and many others. Anthology has added the option to download the Student Activity Log as a CSV, which appears in the screenshot below:

Blackboard mobile app rebranding

To reflect Anthology Inc.’s rebranding efforts, the Blackboard Learn App will now be known simply as the Blackboard App. The change aligns the app with Anthology, Inc.’s rebranding efforts. The Blackboard App has an updated:

  • Splash screen
  • App icon
  • Name

Last Wednesday, over 200 Continuous Professional Learning (CPL) graduates, family members and supporters gathered at the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation for the 2024 CPL Celebration of Excellence. This annual event marks the many achievements attained by CPL learners – a broad group of adult learners who have recently attained new career skills or pivoted to a new area of learning for personal or professional growth.

With a background in banking and finance, graduate Anna Muchoki shared her story of completing the Condominium Management program after moving to Canada five years ago and working as a security guard. She shared her recent success now working as a General Property Manager of twin towers in Toronto with the Humber faculty and staff team, who she credits as “very, very knowledgeable, patient and supportive."

“I want to continue to grow and learn at Humber,” she shared, alongside her family and classmates wearing their newly-minted Humber CPL lapel pins.

Dr. Gina Antonacci, senior vice-president, Academic, and Frank Cappadocia, dean of Continuous Professional Learning, spoke to the celebratory crowd and shared their personal stories of growth through lifelong learning, while many faculty and staff members showed pride in learners' accomplishments as they took in the evening to celebrate and congratulate them.

“This is a very exciting time for our learners,” shared John McNeil, associate dean, CPL at the Longo Faculty of Business. “They have learned new skills, new knowledge and have now earned a Humber credential.”

He encouraged each new graduate to put their new learning to use by embarking on a new project, initiative, or career progression. Many learners in attendance had already done so, as evidenced by the excitement in sharing rewarding new careers across industries.

We congratulate all CPL learners for their accomplishments and their commitment to growth and lifelong learning. Read some of the shoutouts posted to the Celebration of Excellence event webpage in celebration of graduates.
