Here are the highlights of this month’s new and improved features in Blackboard Ultra. For more details, please follow the links below:

Matching question updates: partial credit auto-distribution and other updates

In the past, instructors were limited to selecting only one of four mutually exclusive scoring options for matching questions. This limitation led to inflexibility and confusion. By removing these four options and allowing instructors to set more flexible scoring options, matching questions can be used to measure students' understanding more accurately.

The changes include a redesign of the user interface, which significantly improves usability. Additionally, the updates include the following:

  • Partial and negative credit is turned on by default.
  • Instructors can edit auto-distributed partial credit.

Tab navigation for Journals

Navigation for Journals has been updated from using an arrow to a tab-based system. This change was implemented to enhance usability.

Anonymous grading in Flexible Grading view

In the past, anonymous grading of assignments did not allow instructors to use Flexible Grading view. This reduced the usability of anonymous grading feature. Now Flexible Grading is available in anonymous grading of Assignments. (Flexible Grading view is not yet available for anonymous grading of tests.)

Grading optimization for file-based Assignment submissions in Flexible Grading

In the past, submitting multiple files for a file-based assignment posed several challenges for instructors. These challenges included difficulties in determining the number of files submitted and having to deal with multiple scroll bars when using stacked BB Annotate instances.

With this new feature, multiple files can be easily navigated, and a single BB Annotate can be used to annotate and view all files. The feature improves usability for instructors when reading multiple files submitted by students.

Edit/Regrade in Questions view

Instructors may come across a mistake in a test question while grading or reviewing a test submission. Previously, the "Edit/Regrade Questions" option was only accessible when grading submissions by "Student". To provide instructors with more flexibility, this option is now also available for grading by question.

Sorting controls for Student Name, Overall Grade, Assessments, and Manual Columns in grid view

To offer instructors greater flexibility and options when viewing student grades, sorting controls have been added to Gradebook. Instructors can now sort the Gradebook by Student Name, Overall Grade, Tests and Assignments, and Manual Columns.

Gradebook grid view performance improvements

To enhance the user experience, performance improvements have been made in the Gradebook grid view.

The full list of November updates is available on the Blackboard Help Center website.

The Faculty of Media & Creative Arts asks you to join us in congratulating Michael Karapita on his upcoming retirement, following almost 20 years of service at Humber.

Mike, as he is affectionately known, has spent over 25 years as a professional journalist prior to joining Humber as a professor, and eventually, the program coordinator for the journalism program in 2004. He has worked for the likes of Canadian Press, CTV, and most prominently, CBC. He has written for national news, produced for local, national, and international news, and is even credited with developing several shows for both television and radio. He was nominated for a Gemini award, was named Media Studies Professor of the Year at Guelph-Humber in 2009, and was named one of the top 15 notable arts professors in Toronto by The Art Project in 2019.

Over the years, Mike has made many valuable contributions to the Faculty of Media & Creative Arts and the broader Humber community. He is the recipient of the 2016 Distinguished Faculty Award, helped develop the Accessible Design in Broadcast Media course, assisted with the production of the Inclusive Language in Broadcast Media: A Canadian Style Guide, mentored many years of new faculty hires at Humber, and welcomed CICE students into his classroom.

Mike’s last day at Humber will be December 31, 2023. Please join me in wishing Mike the very best of luck in this next chapter of life.

At Humber College, we work and communicate with a diverse group of learners who have different needs, challenges and barriers.

Here are some suggestions when interacting with any learner, including those with disabilities:

  • Speak directly to learners with disabilities; don’t avoid eye contact or speak only to their companions.

  • Be patient and give your full attention to learners who may have difficulty communicating; some people need more time to express themselves.

  • If you don’t understand someone, don’t pretend you do; ask questions that will help you understand.

  • When speaking with a person who is deaf or hard of hearing, speak clearly, face the person, and don’t cover your mouth. If speaking through an interpreter, direct your attention to the individual with a disability, not to the interpreter.

  • When speaking for more than a few minutes with a learner who uses a wheelchair or scooter, sit down or kneel so you are at the same eye level as them.

  • For learners using a wheelchair, please remember that this equipment is part of their body space. Please don’t touch, lean on, push or handle the wheelchair without the specific direction of the learner.

  • Most learners with disabilities do not fit into conventional boxes, don’t be afraid to be creative when problem-solving with them.

  • If you suspect a learner would benefit from additional support beyond what you can provide, offer a “soft” introduction for the learner to the appropriate person.

Please email accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for topics that you would like addressed through the Communiqué.

Poster of a cat in a purple hat beside a jack-o-lantern. Text: This Halloween remember that culture and identity are not a costume. At Humber we do not mimic equity-deserving groups.

Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber are committed to the principles of human rights, equity and inclusion. Tuesday, October 31 is Halloween, a day filled with scary and creative fun. If you choose to participate in Halloween festivities over the coming days, we encourage you to think about your costumes or party themes.

Some costume choices can reinforce stereotypes of peoples’ identities or demean and devalue the significance of aspects of cultures and religions, particularly those of people from equity-deserving groups. The impact of your choices can be significant, harmful, and negative, regardless of your individual intent.

For more information on cultural appropriation and Halloween please view the following videos:

What can you do to address cultural appropriation?

  1. Education, Reflection, and Self-Work
    • Research cultural appropriation and the impact of cultural appropriation to better your understanding of the issue and how you might address it in your life.
    • Consider your plans for Halloween or other festivities and reflect on whether you are participating in ways that might cause harm to others.
    • Change your plans.
    • Consider taking action with your family and friends to encourage a more inclusive celebration.
  2. Dialogue and Advocacy
    • Talk to others about what you’ve learned and how other peoples’ cultures and identities are not appropriate costumes or something to be made light of.
    • Speak up if you see someone wearing something that could cause harm. You could start a conversation, ask a question, and encourage them to learn more.

Remember culture is NOT a costume. At Humber, we DO NOT mimic equity-deserving groups.

On behalf of the Office of Human Rights & Harassment and Student Success & Engagement, we wish you a happy and safe Halloween.
