Over the last few days, there have been several incidents reported at Humber involving employees, students, and visitors experiencing a fall on a staircase. Although walking up and down the stairs is often an everyday occurrence, it is important to take a step back and remain vigilant.

Staircases come with some inherent dangers that are not present with level surfaces. At Humber, every precaution is taken to design staircases to reduce the potential of a misstep. While conditions, such as wet flooring, can contribute to a fall, some incidents can be caused by inattention, unsafe behaviours, and inappropriate footwear.

Consider the following the next time you need to take a staircase:

  • Remain vigilant: avoid distractions, such as using your phone
  • If outdoors, be cautious of environmental conditions (i.e., rain or snow)
  • Always use the handrail
  • Avoid carrying objects with both hands
  • Do not carry bulky items that can block your vision
  • Wear sturdy and secure footwear and keep your laces tied

If there is a slip or trip hazard present on the stairs at Humber, call 416.675.6622 x4444 (Capital Development & Facilities Management) or 416.675.8500 (Public Safety).

Congratulations to Lida Anwari, Valerie Benigno, Joseph Chan, Ewan Gibson, Cheryl Mitchell, Chris Rugo, Jason Rouatt, Alexandra Ross, Besma Soltan, Varun Verma, Erin Walker and Zee Zaman on being awarded the League for Innovation in the Community College Innovation of the Year Award 2023 for their project, The Idea Lab: Digital Fluency Skills in the Making

The Idea Lab is a Library initiative designed to support students in developing digital fluency skills and media-rich assignments requiring fabrication, audio, video, photography, infographics, simple websites, and more. It provides students, staff, and teachers with access to specialized studio spaces equipped with tech support and tools. They also offer workshops on various topics, curated online resources for multimedia creation, student support and open labs for guidance and assistance. With the creation of these spaces, assignments can be created across courses and programs to embed digital fluency skill development, thereby reaching students at different levels of their learning.

Thank you all for your dedication to creating an innovative and collaborative project that benefits the Humber Community!

The Idea Lab Award Video was released at this year's Showcase and is now viewable on Panopto.

Congratulations to Cory Avery, Matthew Kennedy, Donna O'Brien-Sokić and Andrew Stevenson on being awarded the Humber Innovation of the Year Award 2023 for their project, Real Time Compositing (RTC) & In-Camera VFX (ICFX).

RTC & ICFX is an innovative tool that film productions and Humber students are using and, specifically in virtual production, is replacing green screen technologies by allowing film creators to view a version of their final composite image during production. With the demands for this new workflow increasing, a workforce shortage of skilled creatives and technicians has emerged in Toronto and globally. Developing curriculum for Real Time Compositing, in conjunction with education partner, William F. White International and using their Virtual Production TechLab, this team is innovating new training which is preparing our students to succeed in an economy that is technology-driven and constantly changing. This cutting-edge curriculum development introduces this new(er) media production process across multiple programs, allowing the college to remain current in an ever-evolving media landscape.

Thank you all for your dedication to creating an innovative and collaborative project that benefits the Humber Community!

Thank you to all who attended the President’s BBQ, and participated in the prize draw by returning your blue reusable Friendlier containers. With your help, we kept 1,839 plastic containers out of landfills! This means that 92 per cent of attendees returned their Friendlier containers, which is an excellent demonstration of the programs goal of circularity.

The Office of Sustainability and the Office of the President would like to congratulate the following Friendlier BBQ prize winners:

  • $25 dine on campus gift card goes to Erin Walker & Melanie Ura
  • $25 gift cared for Humber golf lessons goes to Cheryl Pinto
