It is with mixed emotions that I share that Heather Lowry has accepted an exciting new role as Associate Dean, Centre for Teaching and Learning Innovation at Mohawk College.

Heather became full-time faculty in 2004, when she began as Program Coordinator for the 2-year Advertising and Graphic Design diploma. Over the years Heather has contributed significantly to numerous initiatives at Humber, as she continued to take on ever more complex projects and roles, from chairing Showcase through spearheading the development of a 3-year advanced diploma and simultaneously serving as PC to two programs until 2011.

Through her innovative thinking and administrative strength, she became Associate Dean of the New Media and IT cluster of programming in 2012. She supported groups of faculty through a variety of structural changes and by serving as the AD of different program clusters including Interaction Design (IDC), and Music and Fine Arts (MFA).

In 2022 she joined the Innovative Learning team as the Associate Dean of Digital Learning. Heather was integral to our success in supporting faculty in migrating their courses to Blackboard Ultra, to deepening our connection and relationship with our colleagues in ITS, and in supporting a new approach to building online courses.

Although Heather will be much missed by Innovative Learning and the broader Humber community, we wish her much success in this next stage of her professional journey. You can share your good wishes with her and by joining myself and the Innovative Learning team for a light pizza lunch on August 14 at 11:30 a.m. in D201 at North Campus.

As previously announced, Humber is working with Church+State to articulate the outcomes of the Humber Inspired: Vision for 2030 and create a new brand promise, position and personality. They are also leading the development of our new brand identity, which will replace We Are Humber.

While this is typically the time of year in which new printed materials, business cards and swag are ordered for the fall term, we strongly encourage holding off on those orders until the new brand is in place in September. More information will be shared about the new brand at the President’s Breakfast on August 29.

Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE) is pleased to announce the publication of Navigating Digital Transformation: Agile Leadership and Strategic Flexibility in Mid-Sized Manufacturing Firms by Dr. Mark Stoiko.

Abstract:

This study explores the strategies employed by mid-sized manufacturing firms to leverage digital technologies and harness the vast amounts of data associated with them. It examines the impact of digital transformation on various aspects of firms' operations, including product development, manufacturing processes, product sophistication, and value chain integration. Through an analysis of typical stages in the digital transformation journey, the research aims to assess the significance of agile leadership and strategic flexibility in facilitating this transformation. Findings indicate that agile leadership plays a pivotal role in driving successful digital transformation initiatives. Additionally, strategic flexibility, fostered through workforce transformation and dynamic capability, emerges as a crucial factor in enabling digital transformation. The study highlights the importance of swift leadership responses and adaptable strategies in ensuring the success of digital transformation endeavours.

Furthermore, the study reveals a distinction between mature and less mature digital businesses in their approach to technology integration. Mature digital businesses prioritize the seamless integration of digital technologies, such as social, mobile, analytics, and cloud, to transform their operational frameworks. Conversely, less mature digital businesses tend to focus on addressing isolated business challenges through individual digital technologies.

Beginning in late-August, Humber will introduce the new international webpages (www.humber.ca/international), the first phase of the new Digital Experience Platform (DXP) that will transform our website and the user experience on it. In this first phase, Humber International webpages will have a different look and feel, streamlined navigation and enhanced digital experience. The rest of the website is scheduled to be migrated to DXP and the new design by the end of 2025.

DXP is Humber’s investment in a new web platform that will support a radically enhanced online experience for all websites within the humber.ca domain. Learn more in the Communiqué post “What is DXP?”

The new international pages are designed for a wide audience from international learners who might be considering studying abroad, to those graduating and looking for information about post-graduate work permits and more.

The redesigned webpages will support enrolment goals by contributing to an unparalleled student experience. Once live, visitors to the pages will still be able to access current Humber webpages, which will retain the same design and function for the time being.

After this launch, additional webpages will begin to be updated over the months ahead.

This first phase of the DXP-enabled humber.ca website is part of the Digital Student Experience (DSX) Program that emerged from the 2023-2026 Digital Campus and Academic Plans and focuses on enhancing the digital student experience.

More information and details on this DXP milestone will be shared in August.

With summer in full swing and many of us taking vacations (or staycations), it is essential to keep safety in mind. Whether you are heading out of town or simply enjoying local summer events, it is important to secure your work environment before you go. Here are some tips to help you protect your workspace:

  • Ensure that all sensitive documents and valuables are secured in locked drawers or cabinets.

  • Do not leave any personal or valuable items at your workstation unattended.

  • If possible, arrange for a trusted colleague to periodically check on the office premises.

  • When leaving your workstation, unplug any equipment that will not be used, and leave your workstation clean and tidy.

By taking these precautions, you can safeguard your work and enjoy a worry-free vacation.
