The Humber Research Ethics Board (HREB) has an institutional mandate to conduct an ethics review of all proposals for research involving human participants which will be conducted within the Humber Community, with the use of Humber resources or otherwise under the auspices of Humber. The HREB reviews research applications to ensure that all ethical issues are adequately identified and addressed. Serving on the HREB offers an excellent opportunity for Humber faculty to demonstrate a strong commitment to the institution and make a significant contribution to supporting the development of a strong research ethics framework at Humber.

The HREB is seeking to recruit four (4) full-time members. Applications are invited from all interested Humber full-time faculty who meet the following eligibility criteria:

(i) minimum of a Master’s Degree; and

(ii) experience in conducting research.

HREB Members are appointed for an initial term of two years and are eligible for two renewals up to a maximum period of six years. If interested, please submit a Curriculum Vitae to reb@humber.ca by Friday, October 13, 2023.

To obtain more information about what is involved in being a member of the HREB, including the time commitments associated with being a member, please contact the Chair, Audel Cunningham at audel.cunningham@humber.ca.

The Maamwi Hub is inspired by the TRC 94 Calls to Action to ensure that the 24 Colleges of Ontario lead in the education of staff and students on the diverse Indigenous histories, cultures, and current Indigenous worldviews. The word "Maamwi" means "together" in Anishinaabemowin, one of the many spoken Indigenous languages in the territory currently referred to as Ontario.

The Maamwi Hub includes:

  • Learning resources on the history, culture and perspectives of Indigenous Peoples.
  • Learning resources on conducting research respectfully and responsibly.
  • Resources to support curriculum development that promotes Indigenous awareness.
  • Resources to connect, collaborate and support each other on the path to reconciliation.

We hope that the Maamwi Hub will be a part of your ongoing reconciliation journey. It serves as a pathway to an authentic commitment to learn and reflect on the past and present impacts of colonial history on Indigenous Peoples in Canada, and to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Indigenous cultures, knowledges, and worldviews.

The Maamwi Hub came to fruition in 2022 to serve the information needs of the 24 Colleges in Ontario including students, faculty, researchers, and local Indigenous communities. From its inception, the new Hub was developed in close consultation with the Ontario College’s Indigenous Peoples Education Circle (IPEC) and was directed by the Maamwi Steering Committee. The Maamwi Hub continues to grow and evolve through collaborations and consultations with various stakeholders.

It is with heavy hearts that we inform you of the passing of Elsy Valengah Nwana, an international student in the first semester of the Hospitality – Hotel & Restaurant Operations Management diploma program in the Longo Faculty of Business.

As a community, we are deeply saddened by this loss and our thoughts and condolences go out to her family and loved ones during this difficult time.

To honour Elsy and her memory, on Friday, September 29, we will be lowering the flags at the college to half-mast. This gesture serves as a symbol of our respect and admiration for Elsy as she made a positive impact with those she encountered during her time with us.

Elsy’s family would like the Humber community to know that she loved to swim, dance, cook and especially loved to read. She is survived by her parents Cletus Nwana and Glory Mantan, and her two-year-old daughter Ndi Elinora Mbonie.

After 12 years of service at Humber, Geraldine Babcock, director, Community Outreach and Workforce Development (COWD) has made the decision to retire. Her last day on the job will be December 29, 2023.

Geraldine came to Humber in 2012 to lead the COWD department and advance its mandate of supporting access to post-secondary education, training and employment for equity deserving groups such as, newcomers, women, racialized persons, Indigenous Peoples, and youth. Through collaborative partnerships with faculty & departments, industry, and community stakeholders, the department has developed several initiatives, programs and services and secured funding from a variety of government ministries and donors.

Under her leadership, COWD’s funding revenue has now grown to more than $5 million per year for the programs at the North Campus. The newcomer programs for internationally trained professionals and pre-apprenticeship programs for youth and women have expanded and continue to be effective responses for newcomers seeking pathways into their profession in Canada and women and youth interested in careers in the skilled trades. Some of the new innovative programs developed during Geraldine’s tenure include the Youth Transition Program, the Digital Fluency for the Workforce micro-credential and the first-ever donor-supported engineering bridging program.

Geraldine launched the Humber College Community Partnership (HCCP) Fund in 2013, which has supported projects created by Faculties and community partners that provide joint expertise in addressing identified needs and opportunities in the community. Some of the key projects supported by the HCCP Fund include the First Robotics annual event, the Math Camp for youth, and the Gardens Project at Lakeshore to grow food and address local food security issues.

Geraldine’s approach to the work has been to build strong collaborative teams that are exceptional at relationship building, both internally and externally. During her tenure, COWD expanded partnerships with Faculties and departments and community partners, with Geraldine representing Humber at numerous community and City network tables, Colleges ON committees and CICan committees. For the first 10 years of Geraldine’s tenure, she was also responsible for overseeing the Humber College Community Employment Services.

She notes her appreciation for the support COWD has received from all areas of the college along with the broader Humber community, the presidents and executive teams and the Board of Governors. In reflecting on her time at Humber, she is most proud of COWD’s efforts to achieve what the Ontario college system is all about – providing equitable access to education and skills development opportunities to individuals within the community.

I have learnt a lot from working with Geraldine and benefitted from her experience and insight on many occasions. She has been a great member of the External Affairs and Professional Learning leadership team and she will be missed.

Please join me in thanking Geraldine for her many important contributions to Humber and wishing her all the best. We will share information about a retirement celebration for Geraldine when details are confirmed.

Kelly Jackson
Vice-President, External Affairs and Professional Learning
