  • Students requesting extensions as a disability-related accommodation are provided extension guidelines from Accessible Learning Services.

  • There may, on occasion, be exceptions to these guidelines for specific disability-related reasons (for example, when a disability-related reason prevented the student from engaging in the accommodation process).

  • With increased efforts to embed accessibility in curriculum, applying the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) can reduce the need for extension requests. These include breaking down large assignments into smaller components with respective due dates or implementing a “voucher” system allowing all students an opportunity or two to submit assignments late without penalty or rationale.

  • It is understood that there is value in structure, timelines and building responsibility in our students, but peer review supports pedagogical value in compassion and suggests rethinking deadline and late penalty policies.

Visit our ALS Information for Faculty website to learn more about extension accommodations.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.

To all faculty and academic partners,

Scheduling Tests

All seats within the Testing Services are booked through an appointment-based process. For learners to schedule a test in the Test Centres, faculty must first make the test available within Blackboard or CourseLink.

This is done in two easy steps:

  1. Adding the Testing Services integration to your course content  beginning of summer 2022
  2. Providing the test details and the test document – three days prior to the test date

Test Centre staff will approve the submission within one business day. Once approved, faculty will receive an automated email. Faculty can then let learners know that the test is available, and they can book their test via the system.

More information about course integration and submitting a test can be found on our website (including new videos).

Learners

All learners must schedule their tests through Blackboard or CourseLink. Accommodations are automatically connected to the learner's profile in the system, and they are able to select the accommodations they wish to activate for each test. Learners will be prompted to select a date/time that is at minimum 48 hours away. Once the learner has completed their test in the Test Centre, faculty will receive an automated email and Test Centre staff will email faculty the completed exam.

More information about how to book a test can be found on our website (including a new video).

Extended Service Hours

Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. North and Lakeshore
Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. North (starting October 15)

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of all learners.

Hello Humber teams,

I’m writing to let you know that Corina Ivory has accepted a new role as Manager, Work-Integrated Learning within the Humber’s Faculty of Media and Creative Arts (FMCA) and will be leaving her role as Manager, Placements and Partnerships within the FSCS. Corina’s final date with the FSCS is October 14, 2022. In her new role managing the FMCA Work-Integrated Learning Department, Corina will be leading WIL for 34 programs across various creative industries such as Music & Fine Arts, Social Media and Communications, Film, Journalism and Interaction Design. She will continue to collaborate on institutional initiatives connected to all Faculties such as the implementation of Humber’s Work-Integrated Learning Quality Assurance Framework. In her new role, Corina will also actively work to create meaningful WIL opportunities and partnership engagement in Humber’s new Cultural Hub

Corina has been an integral part of the FSCS team over the last 7 years. Corina has been foundational in building our work integrated learning (WIL) portfolio, creating and maintaining relationships with hundreds of partners, all while leading a team of placement advisors who supported FSCS students to secure WIL opportunities. Some of the more notable highlights of Corina’s work include the launch of placement abroad and faculty-led international trips for the FSCS and the establishment of the yearly Partnership Appreciation Conference to better support student success. She formalized flexible WIL offerings for students, and secured the first CEWIL iHub funding for students participating in unpaid WIL. Corina was also instrumental in streamlining administrative processes to assist students in fair and equitable access to WIL opportunities with other departments across the college.

As a whole, Corina’s work has enriched the learning experience of all FSCS students in countless ways. Needless to say, Corina will be greatly missed, and we are extremely grateful for the support, leadership and vision she has provided to our Faculty. We wish her well in her new role with FMCA.

Upon her departure, we respectfully ask that all communication be directed to Diana Balingit (diana.balingit@humber.ca) who will take on the role as Interim, Manager of Placements and Partnerships until we complete the hiring process.

Best,

June MacDonald-Jenkins (she/her)

Humber College is committed to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace. The Employment Equity Act was passed in 1986. Recognizing that "systemic discrimination" was responsible for most of the inequality found in employment, the Abella Royal Commission on Equality in Employment outlined a systemic response and chose the term "Employment Equity" to describe the process.

The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion (Centre) invites all full-time and non-full-time employees to complete the Employment Equity Questionnaire (EEQ). The information that you provide in the EEQ is kept confidential and only reported in aggregate form for Employment Equity purposes. In other words, the reported data does not contain any personal identification.

The Centre invites the Humber Community to read the 2021 Employment Equity Report. Deep thanks to all employees who have completed the EEQ. Having up-to-date knowledge of our workforce representation will allow the College to identify where underrepresentation exists, and to target its efforts toward removing barriers that may exist in the College’s employment systems.

All full-time and non-full-time employees are encouraged to complete the EEQ. Employees are also welcome to update their responses, as needed, to the EEQ. Please note - the completion of Humber’s Employment Equity Questionnaire is voluntary.

Please visit the Centre's website to learn more about Humber’s Employment Equity Program (EEP) and to access Frequently Asked Questions pertaining to the EEP.

The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Inclusion thanks you for helping to build a more inclusive Humber.

Four glass display cases featuring archival material.

Humber Archives is proud to announce our latest in-person archival exhibition, “Selections from the Humber School for Writers Archives.” The archival material on display was repatriated to Humber earlier this year from the University of Toronto Archives, and represents the 30 year history of the Humber School for Writers.

We encourage you to stop by the North Library (4th floor of the LRC) during opening hours to view photographs, news coverage, and speeches made by many of the faculty who have participated in the program and learn more about the important cultural impact this program has had in Canada. Faculty highlighted in the display include authors Wayson Choy, Paul Quarrington, Miriam Toews, M.G. Vassanji and Olive Senior among others.

We also encourage you to explore the online Finding Aid Humber Archives staff have created for this unique resource to learn more about the history of the program and the scope of the collection, and explore some additional digitized materials from the archives.

As part of #CyberMonth2022, the HSPP REEL Big Phishing Trainer game returns for a second season. Once again, through the Humber and Seneca partnership program (HSPP), our colleges have collaborated to develop an interactive awareness game. This season of the game reinforces our learning objectives of the previous season, identifying phishing emails through red flags that are commonly seen in phishing attempts. In addition to identifying phishing emails, additional security best practices have been incorporated to exercise your overall security awareness.

In addition to being fun, interactive, and a great learning experience, the game also features a Humber Vs. Seneca leaderboard, which will allow for friendly competition. You will have the opportunity to play the game as many times as you would like, improving your score and increasing Humber's chances of being this years’ winner.

Our colleagues at Seneca were the victors of season 1, we hope that Humber's competitive spirit will see our community be victorious this season.

To get started, please go to husencollege.com to play the game today!

Finally, and most importantly, win prizes!

As a small token of our appreciation of your continued support of our cybersecurity initiatives, weekly raffles prizes will be made available. You can earn raffle entries each week for completing and participating in the game and our other initiatives - the more you participate, the more entries you can earn. During the final week, a grand prize will be drawn, and all your accumulated raffle entries you have accumulated throughout the month will be eligible.

Note: Please play the game to enter this week’s raffle draw and also a chance to win the grand prize.
