a border of canned foods with text about the Grab 'n Go Food Bank

The Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences is pleased to announce that the FLAS Grab 'n Go Food Bank will reopen at the North Campus for the Fall 2024 term beginning on September 5, 2024.

The Grab 'n Go Food Bank cart is located on the 5th floor of the LRC outside of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and will be available on a rotating schedule throughout the Fall term.

For September, food will be available on:

  • Thursday, September 5
  • Friday, September 13
  • Monday, September 16
  • Tuesday, September 24

How does the Food Bank work?

  1. Members of the Humber community who are experiencing food insecurity or hardship are encouraged to stop by the FLAS Office during business hours on the dates listed above.
  2. There they will encounter a cart with a selection of non-perishable food items.
  3. They can take what they need. It's that easy!

Can I help?

The FLAS Grab 'n Go Food Bank is a faculty-driven initiative intended to help fight food insecurity in our Humber community. If you would like to contribute, food donations are always welcome and appreciated. All donations can be dropped off at the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Together, let's help fight food insecurity and ensure all members of our Humber community have access to food.

Here are the highlights of faculty questions from August. These are not necessarily the most frequently asked questions, but helpful for all faculty members.

You may also read this article on Innovative Learning's Blackboard Hub website.

Question: How do I request a course to be merged? How does it work?

Answer:

Complete and submit this form to merge multiple courses into a single site. All requests are subject to approval. Allow up to five business days for processing, because the start of semester is a peak time for support with merging courses.

This is what the process of a merge looks like:

You, the instructor, have been attached to 3 courses and would like to find a way to manage the courses and content in one main (parent) course. To do this, you can request to merge your courses! These are some example courses you have been assigned to:

  1. CRN 1234 - ABCD-001-0NA
  2. CRN 1235 - ABCD-001-0NB
  3. CRN 1236 - ABCD-001-0NC

In this support request form, you would add the CRN and course codes: CRN 1234 - ABCD-001-0NA, CRN 1235 - ABCD-001-0NB and CRN 1236 - ABCD-001-0NC.

Once the support request is completed you will get a new code (XL) for example: XL12345 or ABCD001 - 202370 - XL12345. When you add content to the parent (XL) site, that content will appear in all 3 child courses (your 3 course sections you merged together)!

Question: How can I complete a course copy?

Answer:

If you are copying an entire course and putting all of it into another course, please follow these steps:

  1. Open the destination course – the course where you want to copy the content.
  2. Click on the three dots in the top-right corner. You will see a menu where you can click on Copy Items to go to the Copy Items Page.

  1. Find the course that needs to be copied from and select the checkbox next to it.
  2. On the right panel, click on “Start Copy” at the bottom. It may take some time to complete the copy process.

Once this is complete, you will see all of the items in your new course!

Please note: When copying a course, be sure to copy the entire course rather than just the content in the course. Copying only the content may result in styling and formatting issues as it may not automatically copy over items referenced by the selected item.

Question: How do I update my Blackboard profile?

Answer:

From the navigation menu when you log into Blackboard, select your name. Here, you will be able to:

  • change your profile picture,

  • change your pronouns,

  • and change your global notification settings.

Changing your email, name and other details needs to take place in your MyHumber account. You can learn more about the Blackboard profile settings by watching this YouTube video from Anthology, or by reading over this resource.

As we conclude our 2019-2024 Sustainability Plan, we are proud to share its final chapter with the release of the 2023-2024 Sustainability Report. Access the document online to learn about our progress towards the Sustainability Plan’s goals.

Some of our key accomplishments reached in the last five years include:

  • Introduction of the Office of Sustainability to the division of Inclusion and Belonging.
  • Project SWITCH, reducing fossil fuel use at the North Campus by 70 per cent.
  • Introduction of reusable containers to campus, avoiding over 340,000 single-use containers from going to landfill.
  • Reaching Bee Campus certification in recognition of our efforts to maintain healthy habitats for pollinators.
  • Launch of the Climate Action Plan, guiding us to reach net-zero.
  • Establishment of Low Waste Event Spaces on campus, where china service is the default catering option at no additional cost and no disposable plates, glasses, or cutlery are available.

As we celebrate our achievements, we also plan our next steps. We are currently developing a Sustainability Vision to give continuity to Humber’s commitment to providing national leadership in developing sustainable campuses. More information about the Sustainability Vision will be available this fall semester.

In the meantime, you can read all the annual Sustainability Reports on the Resources and Reports page.

Leveraging the depth and breadth of Humber’s expertise and interdisciplinary collaboration, the Centre for Innovation in Health & Wellness (CIHW) is excited to share details about our partnership with Klick Health on a research study that uses cutting-edge voice recognition technology to screen for prediabetes in the younger South Asian demographic population.

This CIHW-led research project, “Investigation of the feasibility and impact of voice-based detection of prediabetes in the South Asian population in Ontario”, will employ a machine learning-based acoustic analysis model to identify specific vocal characteristics in individuals with prediabetes within the South Asian population in the Greater Toronto Area.

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases affecting people living in Canada. Over three million Canadians, or 8.9 per cent of the population, have been diagnosed with diabetes. While everyone is at risk of developing diabetes, South Asians face a higher risk compared to the general Canadian population.

South Asian students attending Humber Polytechnic and Guelph-Humber are invited to participate in this study. Recruitment events will take place throughout September and October 2024 at Humber North Campus. Each participant of the study will receive a $25 gift card.

Please share the attached poster with your students. Students who wish to participate can click the registration link or scan the QR code in the poster to learn more about eligibility and participation.
