Between May 27 and June 7, 2024, the International Development Institute (IDI) hosted a delegation from Bhutan as part of the Bhutan Education and Skills Training (BEST) Project.

During this visit, BEST partners from Bhutan engaged with Humber faculty and staff from various departments to undergo training and explore best practices to be replicated and applied within the Bhutanese context.

To continue strengthening the knowledge and expertise of partners under BEST, five Bhutanese partners attended Humber College's Global Summer School (GSS) Program for an on-campus global experience. The group developed their knowledge, skills, and capacity in hands-on learning opportunities and engaged in intercultural conversations.

The four-week program provided professional and personal development opportunities through multidisciplinary and intercultural learning and social interactions among all GSS students. Partners from Bhutan can use their newfound and enhanced knowledge and experiences to foster community and global relationships and address challenges in Bhutan for the country's future.

I am pleased to announce that following a very competitive selection process, Danielle Jeancart has accepted the new role of Associate Dean, Indigenous Education and Engagement, effective August 26, 2024. Reporting directly to the Dean, Indigenous Education and Engagement, Danielle will work closely with the teams in Program Planning, Development, & Renewal, Teaching Excellence, and Digital Learning to further integrate Indigenous Ways of Being, Knowing, and Doing across all Faculties and departments.

Danielle joined Humber in 2022 as the Indigenous Curriculum and Pedagogy Specialist and has since been instrumental in relaunching the Indigenous Teaching and Learning Bundles. These bundles are essential resources that support faculty and staff in gaining a deeper understanding of Indigenous peoples’ lived experiences and histories. In addition to her work on the bundles, she has made significant contributions as a faculty member by supporting the development of the Indigenous Mindset for the Humber Learning Outcomes. Her efforts have also extended to student initiatives, including the implementation of the Six Nations/Hawaii Global Student Opportunity program, designed to support students from Indigenous communities, equity-deserving groups, and low-income backgrounds.

With over 14 years of experience in post-secondary education, Danielle brings a wealth of knowledge and passion for Indigenous education and research. She has held various roles, including serving as a sessional lecturer of history, an education and training specialist, a curriculum developer and program coordinator. Before her time at Humber, she worked with the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres, where she provided training, advocacy, and capacity-building supports for urban Indigenous communities across Ontario.

Danielle is an Indigenous educator of mixed French-Métis, nêhiyaw (Plains Cree), and Ukrainian ancestry from northern Saskatchewan, Treaty 6 Territory. She holds a BA in English Literature from the University of Regina and an MA in Canadian Studies and Indigenous Studies from Trent University, where her graduate research focused on Indigenous history and conceptions of Indigenous masculinity in Canada.

Please join me in congratulating Danielle on her new role. I am confident that her leadership will continue to advance Indigenous Ways of Being, Knowing, and Doing at Humber.

Student Wellness and Equitable Learning is thrilled to announce a collaborative initiative between Humber Polytechnic and the Canadian Mental Health Association Toronto (CMHA). Based on feedback from students and faculty, and grounded in a commitment within the Humber Polytechnic Well-Being Strategy to boost a diversity of mental health supports and resources, we are launching a pilot project designed to provide crucial weekend mental health support to our learners living in Residence, ensuring timely assistance during our 2024-2025 academic year.

As you may recall, we launched a similar initiative with CMHA Toronto in Winter 2024. The pilot gained remarkable traction and was well received by our learner, staff, and Humber Community. To read more, please visit: Final Update Re: After-Hours Mental Health Support Pilot Project | Humber Communiqué

Commencing on Saturday, September 7, CMHA Toronto will be present at both the Lakeshore and North Residences on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to 5 p.m. for a period of 14-weeks each semester. The designated locations for support are as follows:

  • North Campus Residence: R Building, first floor (please visit front desk)
  • Lake Campus Residence: LR Building, first floor (please visit front desk)

This pilot project aims to offer our learners with a meaningful alternative to the emergency department, while enhancing accessibility to mental health resources on campus. Recognizing the diverse challenges faced by our learners concerning the social determinants of health, this strategic partnership not only promotes individual well-being but also facilitates seamless connections to community resources.

For any inquiries or further information about this exciting pilot project, please feel free to reach out to me directly at gabriela.yepez@humber.ca.
