Estefaní’s dedication is evident in her inclusive lesson plans and assessments, active learning strategies, and assignments designed to cultivate critical thinking skills and meet course learning outcomes. In her previous roles as an instructor at the University of Toronto and Ontario Tech University, Estefanía developed curricula that introduced students to essential academic strategies, supporting them in developing metacognition skills, applying learning strategies, cultivating help-seeking behaviours, and strengthening self-advocacy.

During her tenure at Humber, Estefanía has designed and delivered transformational learning experiences that align with our Mission and Vision, particularly in reducing mental health stigma and adopting Humber’s Learning Outcomes in co-curricular programs and service design. As an emerging critical scholar, Estefanía is dedicated to disrupting systemic barriers and building culturally-sustaining and life-affirming spaces in higher education. Her dissertation on the experiences of Latinx/a/o in higher education, recognized with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Doctoral award, highlights her commitment to using culturally-relevant frameworks and methods for social impact. At Humber, she has led various research and assessment activities, employing arts-based methods to understand and improve student mental health and well-being.

Estefanía’s extensive knowledge in student development, strengths-based frameworks, and critical pedagogies will undoubtedly contribute to the success and retention of students in our Pathways Programs. Starting fall 2024, Humber Polytechnic will be the first post-secondary institution in Canada to fully operationalize the social model of disability within its Accessible Learning Services (ALS). This innovative approach emphasizes breaking down physical, social, and attitudinal barriers, creating an inclusive and learner-centered environment that promotes equity and trust for all learners and encourages faculty creativity in learning spaces.

The new ALS service model was developed collaboratively with learners and staff over the past six months, ensuring a focus on empowering learners and proactively removing barriers to participation. Key changes include self-registration through an online intake form, options for learners to self-determine the length of their appointments, and less reliance on disability documentation only when necessary. These enhancements will streamline services, prioritize learners’ lived experiences, and offer flexibility in how learners interact with ALS.

This transformation reflects Humber's commitment to leading in accessible education and aligns with the broader goals of Humber Inspired. By embracing the social model, ALS is setting a new standard for student services and enhancing the learning experience for all.

Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE) is pleased to announce the publication of Student Perceptions of Flexible Deadlines by Lynne N. Kennette, PhD, and Michelle Rivers, MEd.

Abstract

Instructors’ course policies have an important impact on student success in our courses, as well as their perceptions of instructors. One such course policy, which is the focus of this descriptive study, is that of assessment deadlines, more specifically, the various permutations of flexible deadlines. These might include automatic extensions, short or long extensions with or without a penalty, open deadlines for submissions, or a bonus point as an incentive for meeting the deadline. In the present study, we asked students to evaluate these submission deadline policies and how they might affect their well-being, procrastination, and perceptions of their instructor. Although they report encountering them most frequently, students don’t perceive extensions with a reduction in grade (e.g., 10% per day) as helpful for their learning and would prefer automatic non-punitive extensions to help support their success and well-being. Additionally, students reported that they would have a more positive view of their instructor (nicer and cares about their success) if they had a flexible deadline policy and that it would increase their satisfaction with both the course and instructor. Surprisingly, the largest number of students indicated that their preferred flexible deadline policy would be to receive a bonus for submitting it on time. Implications for policy and student success are discussed. The authors recommend that faculty who use hard/rigid deadlines consider adopting flexible deadlines to better support student success.

The first phase of Humber’s DXP-enabled website is live. The new international webpages (www.humber.ca/international), are the first phase of the new Digital Experience Platform (DXP) that will transform our website and the user experience on it.

The redesigned webpages will support enrolment goals by contributing to an unparalleled student experience. Visitors to the International site will still be able to access current Humber webpages, which will retain their same design and function for the time being.

With a different look and feel, the new international web pages have a streamlined navigation and enhanced digital experience and are designed for a wide audience from international learners who might be considering studying abroad, to those graduating and looking for information about post-graduate work permits and more.

We encourage you to visit www.humber.ca/international and explore the new design, structure and end-to-end experience. The new international webpages will be the model for other future Humber sites. Additional webpages will be updated over the months ahead with the rest of humber.ca being migrated to DXP and the new design.

We are grateful for the incredible efforts of the teams and individuals working on the DXP project to get us to the launch of the first DXP-enabled webpages.

The DXP is part of the Digital Student Experience (DSX) Program that emerged from the 2023-2026 Digital Campus and Academic Plans and focuses on reshaping and improving the student experience online.
