Entry to cottages via L building only

Hello Lakeshore Campus community,

I hope you have all had a good start to the fall term. For those who are working or learning on campus, I wanted to let you know that there will be some changes to the exterior entrances on campus.

Beginning on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, the screening points at the walkway in front of C Building and K Building will be closed.

As we prepare for the arrival of colder and inclement weather, these screening points will be relocated to L Building. Anyone entering can then proceed to the rest of the East side buildings.

We will be installing some fencing at these entrances and posting new signage to help direct the flow of people.

With the covered area outside of L Building, we are hopeful that this will be a more pleasant experience should there be a wait to be screened.

Thank you for your understanding. All the best for the rest of the term.

Derek Stockley
Principal, Lakeshore Campus

The Campus Culture Working Group aims to work alongside the Humber community to cultivate and sustain a healthy and inclusive culture. One of the ways to enhance feelings of belonging and inclusion is through the expression of gratitude. Employee recognition is one of the foundations of a successful workplace. At Humber College, we know that showing gratitude has the power to increase belonging and acknowledge another person’s value and humanity.

Starting on October 4 to October 26, 2021, let us intentionally bring joy every day by deepening gratitude throughout our campuses. There are many ways to express gratitude – a smile, a nod, saying thank you, assisting a co-worker with a task without them asking. Starting on October 4, 2021, you are invited to reflect and share your appreciation to someone by posting it on Humber’s Virtual Appreciation Wall.

For more information pertaining to Making a Habit of Gratitude, please contact Campus Culture Co-Chairs Kathryn Edgett at kathryn.edgett@humber.ca and Patricia Suleiman at patricia.suleiman@humber.ca.

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month (CSAM). Once again Humber’s objective is to raise awareness of the importance of cybersecurity, and to ensure our community has the resources and expertise required to be safe and secure online. With this objective in mind, Humber will be providing a number of cybersecurity themed activities throughout the month of October.  Our hope is that all employees participate and master the art of being secure online.

Initiative 1: Delivery of an Education Program

Humber has partnered with the Government of Canada’s Communications Security Establishment to provide our community with resources and activities to support the national Get Cyber Safe initiative and further bolster Humber’s Security. The theme of CSAM 2021 is Life Happens Online. Here are the sub-themes in which we will be reflecting upon each week:

  • October 1: CSAM Launch
  • Week of October 4: Staying in touch
  • Week of October 11: Sharing special moments
  • Week of October 18: Working and networking
  • Week of October 25: Families and businesses

Throughout October, ITS will provide access to training videos, infographics and activities based on the sub-themes above. The delivery format will be on a weekly basis (as per sub-themes) through our training platform KnowBe4. Employees should expect to receive training enrollment and reminder emails from IT Security <do-not-reply@training.knowbe4.com>.

Initiative 2: HSPP Partnership - Phishing Awareness Game

Through the HSPP Partnership, Humber and Seneca College has collaborated to develop an educational Phishing Awareness game. With a focus on strategies for identifying phishing, players must correctly identify phishing emails in a virtual work environment. Employees will receive an email with information on how to access the game in the coming week.

In addition to providing our two communities with an entertaining learning experience, the game will also includes a Humber Vs. Seneca scoreboard which will allow for a friendly competition. So let's show Seneca's Sammy Sting just how powerful the Humber Hawk’s community is.

What is the HSPP Partnership?

The Humber-Seneca Polytechnic Partnership (HSPP) was created to promote cooperation between institutions and enhance and expand learning opportunities as students begin, continue, or complete their postsecondary education. Leveraging the combined resources of Humber and Seneca, the HSPP also seeks to support collaborative activity rather than competition across institutions.

Initiative 3: Phishing Simulations

Throughout the month of October, Humber will deliver a number of simulated phishing emails to your Humber mailbox. These simulations will allow you to apply your cybersecurity knowledge to real world scenarios without the risks associated with a real cyber attack.   When you believe that you’ve received a phishing email, employees are encouraged to report them utilizing the Phish Alert Button(PAB).

Finally, and most Importantly, win prizes!

As a small token of our appreciation of your continued support of our cybersecurity initiatives, weekly raffles prizes will be made available. You can earn raffle entries each week for completing and participating in our initiatives - the more you participate, the more entries you can earn.  During the final week, a grand prize will be drawn, and all your accumulated raffle entries you have accumulated throughout the month will be eligible.

To support our planned activities and to experiment with new technologies, we will once again be delivering some additional materials within Microsoft Teams thereby enabling collaboration, an open dialogue and engagement. To participate, join the GetCyberSafe Microsoft Team, and we will keep you informed as we release new material and activities. To join the Team, do one of the following:

Option 1

Using Microsoft Teams Link

  • Follow this link: GetCyberSafe
  • This link will take you directly into teams.

Sounds Suspicious Right? That’s why we’ve included option 2.

Further to our June announcement, effective October 4, Humber’s Community Outreach and Workforce Development (COWD) team will report to Kelly Jackson, who will be taking on the role of Vice-President, External Affairs and Professional Learning. COWD work will continue to be led by Geraldine Babcock, the department director.

Along with other departments that will comprise Kelly’s portfolio, COWD supports Humber’s external relationships and connects the college’s vision and priorities to the needs and interests of our learners, alumni, donors, and industry, community and government partners. They carry this work out through numerous community development initiatives and through collaboration with Faculties and other stakeholders to provide tailored programs that support equity seeking groups in accessing opportunities for training, education and employment.

Humber’s Community Employment Services continue to be part of the Students and Institutional Planning portfolio that reports to Jason Hunter, Vice-President, Students and Institutional Planning, as these services support a coordinated approach to ensuring successful career outcomes for students and clients. The 2022/2023 Viewbook is now available online in a ‘flipbook’ style via ISSUU. It also works as a great reference tool in the admissions process.

The Staff Lounge Podcast wordmark on orange graphic background to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

“Two-Eyed Seeing and Learning from the Land”

Listen now on the Innovative Learning website or wherever you get your podcasts.

As we mark the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, 2021, we honour the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families and communities.

In reflection, we talk to Louise Zimanyi and Lynn Short about Humber's new Early Childhood Education (ECE) initiative, that focuses on teaching students, educators, and the community to co-learn from the land using Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives. Working with knowledge holders and elders in Ontario who are connected to the lands, the initiative is grounded in the principles of Etuaptmumk/Two-Eyed Seeing (in the Mi'kmaq language).

"Two-Eyed Seeing reflects the interconnection of people and places within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit, known as Adoobiigok, the “Place of the Alders,” by exploring ways of being, knowing and doing from Indigenous and non-Indigenous worldviews.”
