ESOMAR Congress 2022 Review: Intimidated by Innovation? It’s not that complicated!

Innovation had always seemed daunting for Janice Saji, a research assistant at Humber’s Office of Research & Innovation, and innovators—elite beings belonging to a special species handpicked by a greater power in the universe.

The thought of people creating complex devices, like going from using candles to being illuminated by light bulbs, from writing letters to video calling their loved ones using smartphones, and from using libraries to creating computers that let people store it all seemed nothing short of witchcraft or a special sort of genius to her.

But her thoughts about innovation took a 180-degree turn after attending this year’s ESOMAR Congress in our beautiful city of Toronto. It taught her that a driving catalyst for innovation is quite simple and understated. It begins with listening and observing people and their needs. She walked into ESOMAR dreading the thought of innovation and analysis and walked out of it realizing how human these topics are. Because at the end of the day, there will always be endless possibilities to make life easier.

We are aware that the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), the union representing Ontario school board workers, has announced that their members will not be at work on Friday, November 4. As of November 2, various School Boards, including Toronto District, Toronto Catholic District, Durham Catholic, Peel District School Board, York Region District, York Region Catholic District have announced that they would close schools to in-person learning IF a withdrawal of services occurs on Friday. Some Boards have not yet announced final plans.

As each board’s plans may be different, please check with your local school board to find out what their plans are and how you and your family may be affected. It is not yet known if any action will be taken, and whether it will be ongoing. We will continue to provide updates, as appropriate.

While Humber classes and operations will continue as scheduled, we understand that employees and students with school-aged children may need to explore childcare options and adjust their regular routines.

For staff whose ability to complete their regular workday either in-person or remotely is affected because of a school closure or interruption, please speak to your manager. Faculty members should contact their associate dean.

We know that an interruption to the regular school schedule may be challenging as people make alternative childcare arrangements. Please reach out to your manager/associate dean should you require alternative arrangements for completing your work.

As is the case with missing any class, we will be informing students that they need to contact their professor and are responsible for speaking with them if they need to request alternative arrangements for completing coursework.

“Only by understanding our past can we hope to create a brighter future.”
- Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion

November is recognized annually as Indigenous Education Month and Humber College is committed to recognizing and celebrating Indigenous cultures, histories, and knowledges in its academic programming, events, professional development, and other initiatives. Indigenous people have shaped Canada, and this month is a time for all Canadians to reflect on the histories, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

Here are some activities happening at Humber for Indigenous Education Month:

  • At Fall Convocation on November 3, beaded medallions will be gifted to Indigenous graduates.
  • Treaties Recognition Week runs from November 6 to 12 and honours the importance of treaties and helps Canadians understand the significance of treaty rights, treaty relationships and their relevance today. The library will share a reading list of books, videos and websites related to treaty rights, as well as launch artwork at the North Library created on four pillars by 2-Spirit Ojibway artist Patrick Hunter.
  • Indigenous Veterans Day is November 8 and Jason Seright, dean of Indigenous Education and Engagement, will provide remarks regarding Indigenous Veterans Day during the Remembrance Day ceremony this November 11.
  • The annual Indigenous Knowledges Gathering will take place from November 16 to 18.
    • The first virtual session will include a panel of Humber students, alumni, and faculty there to discuss how to effectively promote Indigenous learner success in classroom, learning, support, and service environments.
    • On day two in a virtual session, Dr. Michael Yellowbird will share his neuroscience research that examined how mindfulness approaches and traditional Indigenous contemplative practices can train the mind and positively change the structure and function of the brain.
    • The third session will be held at the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation and focuses on the journey of three professional Indigenous athletes who have achieved milestones in their careers. This session will also be livestreamed to the Humber College YouTube channel. There will also be IE&E community consultation sessions and a mini-hand drum workshop.

  • The Men’s and Women’s Night Launch: IEE Indigenous Student Programming is a hybrid event that will be held November 24.
