Screen shot of book Post-Secondary Education Student Mental Health: A Global Perspective

It is well documented that college/university students are struggling with mental health at a far greater rate than college/university students in earlier decades.

The mental health challenges of this group of population are considered a global public health issue. Post-Secondary Education Student Mental Health: A Global Perspective provides insight and in-depth knowledge on unique challenges, mental health and stressors that college/university students experience.

Information Technology Services is strongly encouraging all staff and faculty to opt-in for Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) and Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) as soon as possible. Multi-factor Authentication increases security on accounts by requiring multiple forms of verification to validate an individual’s identity when signing into an application. This will help to better protect your credentials, information, and Humber’s systems.

Multi-factor Authentication and Self-service Password Reset will begin as an opt in process starting on June 2, 2021. In the fall of 2021, both will become mandatory for all staff and faculty.

How to get started:

  1. Go to https://aka.ms/mfasetup
  2. Go to the https://forms.office.com/r/mMtGivAEYV to complete your MFA setup. This is a critical step in ensuring that MFA is activated! You’re now MFA Enabled and have access to Self-Service Password reset.

Multi-factor Authentication

In October 2020, Information Technology Services began the rollout of Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) for Humber College with the aim of protecting access to user accounts. To date we have rolled out MFA to all the higher risk departments in the institution for the Microsoft 365 platform, and to key users on our Human Resource Management System.

Did you know?

  • MFA can block over 99.99% of account compromise attacks
  • Analysis of breaches documented in 2020 revealed that 61% of breaches leveraged credentials

For this reason, senior leadership at the college has approved a recommendation from Information Technology Services for the mandatory adoption of MFA by all staff and faculty for fall 2021.

Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR)

We are also rolling out a new tool for Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR). We have chosen to change the tool we use for password resets as the new tool is more user friendly and it provides restrictions on the type of passwords that are set to ensure that they are more complex and secure.

With the new Self-service Password Reset Tool, users will have the ability to change or reset their password with no administrator or I.T. Support Centre involvement. The Self-Service Password Reset Tool requires two methods of authentication which ensures users will not lose access to their account if their phone number or mobile device changes.

Students will also be able to take advantage of Self-Service Password Reset.

I am very pleased to announce that Nichole Molinaro is Humber's new Dean of Program Planning, Development and Renewal (PPDR).

Nichole joins Humber from Ontario Tech University where, most recently, she held the position of Director of Institutional Quality Enhancement. In her role at Ontario Tech, Nichole was responsible for overall quality enhancement at the institution, which involved the evaluation of administrative units and academic programs for a public research university (formerly University of Ontario Institute of Technology). Nichole was instrumental in building the university’s Centre for Institutional Quality Enhancement and quality assurance systems from the ground up. She also coordinated the integrated planning process for all academic and support units, and oversaw the creation of a fully integrated university-wide curriculum management system to support transparency, accuracy and efficiency of program development and renewal.

During her 12-year tenure at Ontario Tech, Nichole also served as Senior Policy and Resource Analyst, where she was responsible for researching and making recommendations on a wide-range of topics affecting the university. She prepared government grants for funding, as well as strategic and policy documents for senior leaders on emerging issues.

Nichole has a wide range of experience crossing academic, non-profit, and government management roles, and has developed a solid reputation for building and leading effective teams to ensure a positive, collaborative and inclusive workplace culture.

Nichole holds a Master of Public Administration from Carleton University and is pursuing a Doctor of Public Administration from Walden University, where she is focusing on Institutional Learning Outcomes development and the integration of ILOs in overall strategic planning.

At Humber, Nichole will report to me and be responsible for leading our PPDR team within the Centre for Innovative Learning, in collaboration with the Dean Innovative Learning and Dean Research and Innovation in support of a culture of quality, continuous improvement and innovation. Nichole will also work in close collaboration with the Faculties, the Dean of Continuous Professional Learning, Dean of Indigenous Education and Engagement and other stakeholders across the college. Nichole’s first day is July 28.

Please join me in welcoming Nichole to Humber.
