Humber College has received a donation from NBCUniversal to support the next generation of Canadian film and media industry professionals and creators.

NBCUniversal and Humber have created the NBCUniversal NextGen Diversity scholarships to help equip and train students studying in Film and Media-related programs at Humber who self-identify as Indigenous peoples, women, or racialized persons. The scholarships were developed to help foster a future media landscape that is more diverse and inclusive.

"Today's film and media sector in Canada is drastically different, and the need for diverse talent at every level and facet of the industry is greater than ever before. What remains unchanged is that education is the first entry point to the industry," said Guillermo Acosta, senior dean, Faculty of Media & Creative Arts, Humber College." By establishing these scholarships, NBCUniversal is demonstrating their commitment to education and diversity in their field, a commitment that echoes the role Humber plays in the sector."

Through this gift, students in Film and Media Production, Film and TV Production, Post-Production, Film and Multiplatform storytelling, and TV Writing and Producing will be able to apply for one of the 20 scholarships starting in January 2022.

Humber has raised more than $45 million towards its $50 million Unlimited campaign with this gift.

The Humber Cultural Hub (HCH) at the Lakeshore campus will be home to programs that build the next generation of artistic, cultural and creative leaders. It will inspire creativity, support a connected community, encourage public appreciation of the arts and offer world-class film, media and performance facilities. The HCH is supported in part by Humber’s Unlimited campaign.

What does ‘upskilling’ mean for the future of work? Many experts believe upskilling is urgent, but most people don’t know where to start. Humber researcher Barath Roy Michel, senior project manager, Office of Research & Innovation (ORI), was featured in an article on BBC alongside quotes from experts at McKinsey and LinkedIn.

Read the BBC Worklife article for some great insights.

Barath Roy Michel and his research team recently published an original research paper, A Study on Skills Gap: Beyond COVID, in the Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Innovation (JIPE), published by Humber Press, ORI.

Michel notes that upskilling can look different for everyone. He states, “Take a step back and see what’s happening in the wider industry, and see how you can get yourself ahead of the curve."

Congratulations to researcher Barath Roy Michel!

We are excited to share that Humber College was named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for the seventh year in a row. The award recognizes employers that lead the nation in making environmental values part of their organizational culture.

“Over the last several years, there has been a culture shift at Humber in which sustainability isn’t just something we consider on its own, but something that is a part of everything we do,” said Lindsay Walker, associate director, Sustainability. “I’m proud to see we’re recognized as a Greenest Employer for the seventh year running. Congratulations to our students, staff and faculty who take responsibility for embedding sustainability into their roles on and off campus that help us create a better world for all.”

Some of Humber's sustainability highlights include:

O2GO Reusable Container Program

The O2GO program was implemented to help reduce waste on campus. Approximately, five million disposable containers have been averted from landfills and oceans by using O2GO. At Humber, 91 per cent of participants are happy with the program.

Humber's Climate Action Plan

Humber's Climate Action Plan (CAP) outlines our roadmap to carbon neutrality by 2050, with ambitious goals to reduce energy, water, and greenhouse gas emissions at the source rather than purchasing carbon offsets. The CAP emphasizes resilience, adaptation and advocacy, further positioning Humber as a leader in sustainable campuses.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Recycling Program

Humber College implemented a pilot Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Recycling Program with the help of Zero Waste Boxes from TerraCycle. Designated PPE Recycling Stations are available to staff, students and faculty, with stations situated near building exits, and specific labs that have seen an increase in disposable items such as face masks, gloves, hair nets, etc. The pilot PPE Recycling Program has collected 40 lbs of single-use PPE waste, contributing to the millions of pounds TerraCycle diverts from landfills and incinerators each month.

Humber is a Certified Bee Campus

Humber became a designated Bee Campus in the Fall of 2021. To educate the public about bees, Humber installed hives at our North and Lakeshore campuses as well as in the Arboretum. All hives are to be reared using organic and ethical practices. We are excited to partner with Bee City Canada to ensure we are advocating for native species in the 250 acres of natural space surrounding Humber’s campuses.

NX Building Retrofit

Humber College performed a deep retrofit to the NX building, turning one of the campus’ most inefficient buildings into an industry-leading example of zero-carbon excellence. The project included a complete replacement of the building envelope with new 14-inch-thick walls, Passive House triple-pane windows, and a new Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) mechanical system, all of which were installed while the building was occupied.

Please view the 2019-2024 Humber Sustainability Plan and Supporting Actions to learn more about Humber's long-term sustainability vision and goals.

Are you about to retire?

Consider joining the Humber College Retirees’ Association (HCRA).

This is a way to keep in touch with colleagues and even to meet those fellow employees your work didn’t give you a chance to know better.

The majority of our activities are social, but we also support students through the Retirees' Bursary and Scholarship Programs.

Your retirement information from HR will include the HCRA brochure that has membership information. Or you can go to the “Come Join Us” webpage at the address below.

An additional note: HCRA membership is open to all former employees of Humber College, part time and short-term contract. These employees are not formally “retired” so HR will not convey HCRA info to them. Tell any colleagues of this membership opportunity.

Myths and misleading information remain largely because cannabis consumers lack access to reliable, scientific sources and instead rely on information from less reliable sources. The initiative “Weed Out Misinformation” focuses on harm reduction by teaching people how to be safer, reduce risk, and minimize negative outcomes with the use of cannabis.

We invite you to learn more about the research the Engaging and Educating Young-Adult Cannabis Consumers project that launched in 2020 with funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. The research program aims to better understand young adult cannabis consumers, how they obtain cannabis information, and which myths they continue to believe as a result of prohibitionist drug education. The project is led by Dr. Daniel Bear and Dr. Ashley Hosker-Field (FCSS), and Professor Marilyn Cresswell (FMCA).

Find out if you are able to identify cannabis myths here by taking this quiz:
