Humber Press eBook release: Polytechnic Education: A Vision for Ontario

Humber Press is pleased to announce the release of Polytechnic Education: A Vision for Ontario.

Polytechnic Education: A Vision for Ontario is a volume of essays on polytechnics in Ontario. Ontario polytechnics are thriving and graduates are in demand. The case for formalizing polytechnics is about modernizing the post-secondary education system to leverage the differentiation that is evolving organically.

Polytechnic institutions act as invaluable innovation resources for Canadian businesses. Through applied research, polytechnics are well-positioned to help companies and communities move forward and put ideas into action. The work we as educators and administrators do is more important than ever, given the impacts of technology and globalization in driving our knowledge and innovation economy.

The essays will:

  • provide a working definition of polytechnics in Ontario;
  • articulate the benefits and polytechnic value proposition; and
  • discuss challenges and implications going forward.

Read it now—eBook available online or through Humber Libraries, Polytechnic Education: A Vision for Ontario.

This book has been published under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License, which allows the material to be copied and redistributed in any format for a noncommercial purpose such as education.

Through the HSPP Partnership, Humber and Seneca College have collaborated to develop an educational Phishing Awareness Game. With a focus on strategies for identifying malicious emails, players must correctly identify phishing emails in a virtual work environment.

In addition to providing our two communities with an entertaining learning experience, the game will also include a Humber Vs. Seneca scoreboard which will allow for friendly competition. So let's show Seneca's Sammy Sting just how powerful the Humber Hawk’s community is.

To get started, please go to husencollege.com to play the game today.

Finally, and most importantly, win prizes!

As a small token of our appreciation of your continued support of our cybersecurity initiatives, weekly raffles prizes will be made available. You can earn raffle entries each week for completing and participating in the game and our other initiatives (security awareness training and reporting the phishing simulations with the phish alert button) - the more you participate, the more entries you can earn. During the final week, a grand prize will be drawn, and all your accumulated raffle entries you have accumulated throughout the month will be eligible.

Note: Please play the game to enter this week’s raffle draw and also a chance to win the grand prize.

The Orientation Team within Student Success and Engagement (SSE) is excited to announce that Orientation will be in-person for the coming winter term! Thank you to our academic faculty and campus partners for supporting Orientation in all the forms it has taken for the past several semesters. We are excited to work with you all to plan and deliver programming to support student success.

Although we are returning to in-person program delivery, we will also continue to share the incredible online resources that the Humber community has created over the past year to support system navigation and promote creative virtual engagement.

Here is the outline for Winter 2022 Orientation:

  • December: We will launch our video-based Online Orientation Blackboard module, available to all incoming students for the entirety of the winter term. This module will strengthen students' knowledge of the supports and resources that are available to help them succeed at Humber while also welcoming them to take part in the in-person Orientation components we are so excited to offer.

  • January 6 to 7: We will host Academic Orientation with our Meet Your Faculty sessions. These sessions will be in-person, on campus. We will be reaching out directly to Faculty in the next few weeks regarding more information and the next steps.

  • January 1 to-31: Orientation, working with our Campus Partners, will offer a full month of Welcome Events for students. Our programming will focus on well-being and social connection, and we will continue to promote services and resources available to students.

We welcome feedback from all our partners and appreciate the continued support from the college community.

If you have not previously been involved with Orientation but would like to partner with us in welcoming students in person for Winter 2022, please reach out to orientation@humber.ca.

Best,

Kimberly Daniels (she/her)

As mentioned in the Humber Communiqué, we are offering all 2020 and 2021 graduates the opportunity to register for a 15-minute spot to commemorate their achievement by taking a photo in a gown in one of our mini grad booths, and we are looking for help to support the event.

The event will take place at the Toronto Congress Centre on Wednesday, November 3 and Thursday, November 4.

We are scheduling staff to work shifts from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and/or 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Please fill out your preference in the Doodle link - there is still time to sign up! As reminder, please receive approval from your manager prior to completing the Doodle.

Staff duties may include assisting graduates and guests with registration and verifying their appointment booking time, providing graduates with gowns and a stage credential, guiding graduates and guests to their photo booth, providing directional support and answering general enquiries, and other duties as assigned.

Personal Protective Equipment will be supplied and training will be provided at a later date.

As the pandemic has changed our in-person Convocation, it has also changed our convocation food options. Lunch and dinner options will be different and buffet-style will no longer be utilized. Sorry folks, we will have to wait a bit longer for Sheppard’s pie!

Lunch will be provided to staff working the day shift (one-hour lunch break). Similarly, dinner will be provided to staff working the evening shift (5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. dinner break). Please note: breakfast will not be provided, so please plan accordingly.

Staff are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the Toronto Congress Centre - parking is free. For those driving to the TCC, mileage will be paid accordingly. Instructions will be sent following the event.

More information about the event can be found on the Convocation website. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Rhonda Harrison or Tanya Reda.

Humber College has won three projects under the Young Africa Works-Kenya: Youth Employability through TVET (Young Africa Works in Kenya-TVET) initiative with a total value of $3,344,789. The program will run for three years through a partnership between Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) and the Mastercard Foundation.

What is the HSPP Partnership?

The Humber-Seneca Polytechnic Partnership (HSPP) was created to promote cooperation between institutions and enhance and expand learning opportunities as students begin, continue, or complete their postsecondary education. Leveraging the combined resources of Humber and Seneca, the HSPP also seeks to support collaborative activity rather than competition across institutions.
