As you may know, Humber has the ambitious goal of becoming the healthiest campus in Canada. In order to make sure we achieve that goal, we need input from our students.

A healthy campus is one that fosters and supports mental, physical, financial and social health; as well as equity, diversity and inclusion, and community.

We need to learn about student experiences to help us identify what is working and where we can work to improve. To gather this feedback we are holding Healthy and Inclusive Campus Student Engagement Discussions in early March and I would encourage you to share these opportunities with students so we can gather as much feedback as possible.

Each day, all student attendees will receive a $10 Tim Horton’s card and a draw will be held for $500 towards tuition.

The 60-minute sessions will be held at Lakeshore and North campuses on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, March 3 and Wednesday, March 4
    Lakeshore Campus, L1017
  • Monday, March 9 and Tuesday, March 10
North Campus, Seventh Semester (KB111) by the Food Emporium

Students can register for a session here, and select the date, time and location that work best for them. As we collect the information from these discussions the identities of the respondents will remain confidential.

Thank you for your help. Together we can make Humber the healthiest campus in Canada.

The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Diversity would like to thank the Humber community for providing input on the revised definitions of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Humber College. The Centre will review the definitions annually with the College as human rights terms are constantly evolving.

Provided below (and attached) are the revised definitions for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Humber College.

Definitions

Equity: refers to the ongoing intentional and systemic approach to remove historic and current barriers for equity-seeking groups. Humber applies specific programs, policies and practices to support fair and just outcomes.

Note: At Humber, equity-seeking groups refer to communities who were historically and who are currently underserved and underrepresented. These groups include Women, Indigenous Peoples, Persons with Disabilities, Racialized Persons, Persons from diverse Gender Identities and Persons who identify as LGBTQ+.

Diversity: refers to the different social, cultural and political identities of individuals and their worldviews, knowledges, practices, and experiences. Humber values and respects the contributions of its diverse students and employees leading to an enriched learning, working and living environment.

Inclusion: refers to the active and intentional engagement of people in all their diverse social, cultural and political identities that fosters a sense of belonging. At Humber, this engagement is grounded in respect, and all members of the college community are recognized as valued contributors. Inclusion is intrinsically connected to wellbeing and enriches innovation, sustainability and excellence in curricula, research, programs and services.

After an extensive national search, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Jason Seright as Humber’s Dean of Indigenous Education and Engagement.

The Dean will provide leadership in support of Humber’s 2018-23 Strategic Plan commitment to expand and enhance Indigenous programming, methodology, research, practice and delivery. In addition, he will work with the Aboriginal Resource Centre team and internal and external college partners to continue to meet Humber’s commitments to the national Indigenous Education Protocol signed in 2014, and our ongoing response to the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action.

Jason is joining us from Saskatchewan Polytechnic, where he has served for six years as the Director of Indigenous Strategy. In that role, Jason provided vision, leadership and direction to the implementation and continuous improvement of the Indigenous Student Success Strategy, which focuses on increasing Indigenous student success through higher completion rates and creating a sense of belonging.

Jason has more than 25 years of experience in Indigenous education in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, with a focus on increasing Indigenous student enrolment and completion. Prior to Saskatchewan Polytechnic, he was a facilitator-consultant on First Nations Métis education with the Mamawohkamatowin partnership, a collaboration between Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools, Saskatoon Tribal Council and Central Urban Métis Federation. Jason has held a variety of leadership positions, including Maskwacis Outreach School principal, Central Okanagan School District principal and Ermineskin Elementary Junior School principal.

Jason holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Calgary. He began his studies at the University of Saskatchewan, where he graduated with a bachelor of education, including minors in native studies and Indian and northern education. Jason is Metis of Cree and Dene ancestry and is originally from Northern Saskatchewan, Buffalo Narrows and Ile a Lacrosse.

Jason will begin his role at Humber on March 30.

Tawaw, Wa’tkwanonhwerá:ton, Boozhoo, Welcome, Jason!
