It is with mixed emotions that I write to share the news that Shari Walsh, currently the Manager, Transition & Leadership Programs in Student Success & Engagement, will be leaving Humber on March 1, 2019 to take on the role of Associate Director, Student Engagement, Academic Advising & Career Services at Niagara College. 

In over six years of service here at Humber, Shari has contributed to various service and program areas in Student Success & Engagement including Residence Life and Student Life. Shari has played a significant lead role in advancing new models of service for Orientation, off-campus student support, leadership development programming and of course, the Co-Curricular Record. During her tenure, all of those program areas have seen incredible growth in the levels of student engagement and demonstrated measurable impact on key student success outcomes. More recently, Shari has taken on responsibility for some key strategic projects including the alignment of the CCR competencies with the evolving ILO framework, co-chairing the SEM Working Group looking at employment outcomes for our students with disabilities, leading SSE’s initiatives under the Career Ready Fund, and last but not least, the review and enhancements to our Work Study program. In all that she did, Shari showed intentionality, commitment and a true passion for delivering a quality experience for our students.

All Ontarians have the right to be free from harassment in learning, working and living environments because of, among other things, race, color, ancestry, place of origin, ethnic origin, citizenship and creed/religion. Racial harassment is a form of discrimination and a breach of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Humber’s Human Rights Policy.

Harassment is defined as “engaging in a course of vexatious comment or conduct that is known or ought reasonably to be known to be unwelcome”. The following types of behaviors will typically be considered racial harassment:

• racial epithets, slurs or jokes
• being subjected to racial name calling or nicknames
• racial jokes, cartoons or graffiti, including when circulated by email
• ridiculing comments related to race-related characteristics
• being subjected to references to racist organizations, such as having “KKK” painted on a locker

Racial harassment can intersect with other forms of harassment such as harassment on the basis of gender, religion, sexual orientation and disability.

It is not necessary for someone to object to the behaviour for it to be in violation of Humber’s Human Rights Policy. The fact that someone may have gone along with, or participated in harassing omments or conduct on the basis of race does not provide a defense. In addition to racial harassment, the creation of a poisoned environment is a form of discrimination and is contrary to the Ontario Human Rights Code. A poisoned environment can be created by a single incident if serious or substantial enough. It is the responsibility of every employer, landlord, and service provider to take steps to ensure that its environment is free from harassment or inappropriate race-related comments or conduct, even if no one objects.

Applications are now open for the $20,000 Launch Me Pitch Competition!

The Launch Me Competition provides aspiring entrepreneurs with the opportunity to develop and pitch their business ideas for a chance to win a portion of $20,000 in funding and resources to support their startup.

Steps for the competition:

1. Complete and submit application
2. Applications are reviewed by a panel of external experts
3. Finalists will be selected
4. Finalists will pitch their ideas at a live event to a panel of judges
5. Winners are selected!

Eligibility:

1. All applicants must be members of the Centre for Entrepreneurship (CfE)
2. The main applicant must be current student at Humber College or Guelph-Humber or recent alumni (within two calendar years post-graduation).
3. Applicants should have attended all three Business Plan workshops, in person or online.
4. Previous awardees of any Centre for Entrepreneurship competitions are not eligible to participate. However, students/alumni who previously entered a competition but did not win are eligible to participate.

How to Enter:

1. Submit a completed application and business plan to cfeapplications@humber.ca by Monday, February 25, 2019 at 12 p.m. (noon)
2. All applicants will be contacted regarding the results of their application no later than, Wednesday, March 13, 2019
3. The finalists will participate in the live competition on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at the LRC and pitch their business idea to a panel of external judges.The judging criteria can be found in Appendix B in the Competition Rules and Guidelines document.
4. Unsuccessful applicants may be offered further assistance in developing and launching their new venture.
