Learners with disabilities may encounter different barriers from the classroom to Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) environment. This requires the need to consider specific accommodations to address these barriers. As a result, the WIL ALS Accommodation Letters developed for placement look different than standard Accommodation Letters issued by Accessible Learning Services (ALS).

Here is some key information regarding WIL ALS Accommodation Letters:

  • Accessibility Consultants work with learners to determine if they experience functional limitations that may impact their ability to meet the required learning outcomes for WIL courses.

  • A standard ALS Accommodation Letter may indicate the following: "Placement accommodation planning may be required". A WIL Accommodation Letter will then be developed if appropriate, once more information can be obtained regarding placement requirements.

  • To determine the type of placement environment the student may be working in, Accessibility Consultants may reach out to the program for information in advance of determining what accommodations to recommend.

  • WIL Accommodation Letters are not available on the ALS Faculty Web Portal. In most cases, the letters will be sent from the Accessibility Consultant to the appropriate contact within the program.

  • One key difference between the letters is that learners sign the WIL Accommodation Letter to confirm the letter can be shared with the placement site.

  • Learners who have not previously registered with ALS may encounter disability-related barriers when they are doing a WIL course and require accommodations only for WIL courses.

  • Learners with a standard Accommodation Letter often do not need placement accommodations. If a learner requests placement accommodations, direct them to contact their Accessibility Consultant if they are already registered with ALS or our front desk to schedule an initial appointment if they are not.

Accessibility Consultants are available to facilitate presentations on WIL accommodations to faculty and staff.

Visit our Accessible Learning Services faculty site to learn more about accommodating students with disabilities.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.

Background

Humber is committed to continuous quality improvement and engaging students in this process. Beginning January 29, the college will administer the online Ontario Colleges Student Experience Survey (OCSES). This survey will measure student experiences related to teaching and learning quality, program related knowledge and skills, work-integrated learning (if applicable), and student services and resources. The results of the survey will allow the college to identify strengths and areas of improvement.

Administration

All students in full-time, funded programming who are in their second semester or above will receive a personal survey link on Monday, January 29. The survey will remain open until Friday, February 16 at midnight. Key messaging will be communicated to students by Humber to promote the survey and encourage completion. In order to achieve an optimal response to this survey, facilitators/instructors will be present in classes selected by the Faculties to explain the purpose of the survey to students, provide direction for survey completion and allot class time to complete the survey (approximately 10-15 minutes).

For questions about the survey, please contact Jean O’Donnell at jean.o’donnell@humber.ca.

Occupational Health and Safety Services

Celebrated annually during the second full week in January, Home Office Safety and Security Week is a great time for workers who work from home to evaluate their home offices and workstations to ensure optimal safety and security. With many of us working remotely in some capacity, let us take a step back and ensure we are working in a safe environment at home.

Consider the following to maximize home office safety:

  • Review the ergonomic set-up of your at-home workstation. The Humber Occupational Health and Safety Webpage includes many ergonomic tools & tips, and you can also complete the Office Ergonomics Self-Assessment Checklist.
  • Maintain a comfortable working temperature, with adequate lighting and controlled noise levels.
  • Practice good housekeeping by keeping your work area tidy and free of clutter.
  • Ensure shelving and cabinets are in good condition and securely anchored so they are not at risk of falling.
  • Pay close attention to electrical safety. Ensure power cords are in good condition, and plug power bars directly into the wall; do not overload electrical outlets. Make sure that electrical cords do not present a tripping hazard.
  • Know what steps to take in case of a fire or other emergency. Keep exits and pathways clear, and ensure the area is equipped with properly functioning smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

To assist in evaluating your home office, please use Humber’s Remote Workspace Self-Assessment Checklist.

For more information on working safely from home, please speak to your manager or contact the Occupational Health & Safety Services team at healthandsafety@humber.ca.
