I am pleased to announce that Dr. Jonathan Kim has accepted the position of Associate Dean, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at the Faculty of Applied Technology, effective November 5, 2018. Jonathan brings a wealth of experience in industry-sponsored applied research, post-secondary teaching and learning, and industry-guided curriculum and degree program development.

Since 2011, Jonathan has worked in the college system as a full-time Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and has held leadership roles in applied research, capstone projects, curriculum development and industry engagement. Jonathan has served as program coordinator and led a team of faculty members in degree program development.

He is passionate about student success, and has made significant contributions to quality and success of students’ learning through capstone projects and curriculum development. From 1990 to 1998, Jonathan taught in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Victoria, as an Assistant Professor and later as an Associate Professor with tenure, establishing an award-winning reputation for teaching and research excellence. From 1999 to 2009, he was a senior research associate with the Centre for Applied Power Electronics (CAPE) at the University of Toronto, fully devoted to industry-sponsored research and development projects. From 2010 to 2015, he was an adjunct professor at Yanbian University of Science and Technology, Yanji City, Jilin, China, developing curriculum and teaching summer courses.

Jonathan is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario. Jonathan graduated from the University of Toronto where he received his B.Sc. in engineering science, M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering.

After 33 years of exceptional service to Humber College, Sherry Fast has decided to officially retire mid-December 2018. Known to many for her “fast” action, dedication, relationship building and customer service, her presence at the College will surely be missed. 

Over the years Sherry has contributed to various departments and initiatives throughout Humber. Sherry started out mailing registration packages in the Registrar’s Office, working in the “Personnel Relations Centre”, supporting the Freedom of Information project, Career Development Project and working as Administrative Assistant in the Human Studies Department. Due to Sherry’s consistent willingness to help in any way she can, many opportunities came Sherry’s way until she finally settled in the salary administration area of Human Resources. Possessing a knack for getting things done along with her wealth of knowledge, Sherry became a main pillar of the Human Resources team and resource for so many across the College.

In 1995, Sherry’s strong customer service focus was recognized when Sherry received the Support Staff Distinguished Service Award for outstanding customer service.

We proudly acknowledge Sherry’s outstanding customer service and dedication to HR and Humber as a whole.

Please join us in wishing Sherry well on her exciting journey ahead.

I’m very happy to announce that Leanne Milech, one of our recently hired faculty in the Department of English, was just awarded the “Best Story by an Emerging Writer Award” in the Carter V. Cooper Short Fiction Competition. The award is a not insignificant sum of money as well as fully deserved recognition for Leanne as a talented, emerging fiction writer.

Marketing Team Leadership:
I am delighted to announce that Lori Falvo been promoted to Associate Director - Marketing. Building on her six years’ experience working with the Humber community as our Marketing Manager, she will play a leading role in the development and execution of our internal and external marketing campaigns and initiatives and our updated brand strategy. Congratulations, Lori!

Advertising/Branding:
Marie Kyrinis is now our Senior Marketing and Brand Specialist. Marie supports the development of marketing collateral for Humber schools and departments and is the go-to person for advertising and branding enquiries, particularly in terms of appropriate brand and logo usage.

Content Management/Publications/Wayfinding:
Debbie Krulicki is our Marketing Content Coordinator who oversees the coordination of content management and workflow/approvals for program and course content. She is responsible for the program content on humber.ca in addition to the production of full-time and CE program calendars. Debbie also looks after campus signage and wayfinding maps.

Marketing Operations:
Rebecca Fox is our Marketing Coordinator. Rebecca supports a variety of activities and helps to keep our team organized. These include photo shoot coordination; image and logo requests; updating of our social media directory; and, booking Humber pull-up display banners for events.

Website Development:
Lam Trinh and Jason Maggiacomo are our Full Stack Developers who assist many Humber departments with front and back-end web development. They can help you conceptualize your website needs and turn it into a functional and user-friendly product. They support the strategic goals and objectives of Humber through multiple digital marketing initiatives.

For those interested in beginning their studies in French, we are opening a new French 1 intensive class starting on Thursday, November 1. The class will run from Thursday, November 1 until Thursday, December 20 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the North Campus. This is the first course in the French Language Certificate. The French Language classes qualify for staff tuition fees.

The International Centre is pleased to announce a new mandatory online travel registry system for all Humber students participating in an approved travel activity outside of Ontario. The travel registry replaces the paper “Student Out of Province Travel Activity Form” referred to in Humber’s Out of Province Travel Policy and Procedure. Information collected in the registry allows Humber to monitor student safety, mitigate travel risks, and provide assistance where feasible in cases of out-of-province emergency.

Humber-sanctioned student travel may take a number of forms including (but not limited to):

  • Internship/Work Placement
  • Faculty-Led Trip / Study Tour
  • Semester Abroad
  • A Conference/Competition
  • Academic Summer Program
  • Varsity

Please refer to the Humber Travel Registry Guide for a detailed "step-by-step" on how to complete the online registry. All Humber employees responsible for approving student travel outside of Ontario are required to advise students to complete the mandatory registry at least four weeks prior to travel (where possible).

Humber's online travel registry is made possible thanks to partnership with iCent app, Information Technology Services, and the Registrar’s Office. The International Centre extends tremendous gratitude to all involved in the development and launch.

They are back to normal operations until they decide to go on a nationwide strike. The mailroom at the North and Lakeshore campuses will be picking up and processing the outgoing mail as usual.

Please see the research study notice below for information pertaining to a research study that Baking & Pastry Arts Management Professor, Douglas Smith, is conducting over the next few weeks through Yorkville University.  He would greatly appreciate your assistance in providing this information to interested international students who can assist with the project.

Research Study Notice

Under the mentorship of Dr. Darryl Bautista (Yorkville University, University of New Brunswick), Douglas Smith is seeking only international student participants to take part in a study in identifying any barriers that they may face, which could impact their learning success.

He needs to have student volunteer names submitted within two weeks.  Ensuring that our international student community is successful in their learning is a priority in our teaching. Through Doug's studies, he hopes to identify what some of these barriers might be and further to that learn how to manage these barriers effectively.
