Employment Equity at Humber College

"It is not that individuals in the designated groups are inherently unable to achieve equality on their own, it is that the obstacles in their way are so formidable and self-perpetuating that they cannot be overcome without intervention. It is both intolerable and insensitive if we simply wait and hope that the barriers will disappear with time. Equality in employment will not happen unless we make it happen." - Judge Rosalie Silberman Abella Royal Commission on Equality in Employment, 1985

Humber College is committed to principles of equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace. The Employment Equity Act was passed in 1986. Recognizing that "systemic discrimination" was responsible for most of the inequality found in employment, the Abella Royal Commission on Equality in Employment outlined a systemic response and chose the term "Employment Equity" to describe the process.

What is Employment Equity?

Employment Equity is an on-going planning process used by an employer to:

  • identify and eliminate barriers in an organization's employment policies and procedures;
  • put into place positive policies and practices to ensure the effects of systemic barriers are eliminated; and
  • ensure appropriate representation of identified group members throughout their workforce.

What is the goal of Employment Equity?

  • eliminate employment barriers for the designated groups: women, persons with disabilities, Aboriginal people, members of racialized groups. At Humber, we provide persons with the opportunity to identify their sexual and gender identity.
  • remedy past discrimination in employment opportunities and prevent future barriers;
  • improve access and distribution throughout all occupations and at all levels for members of the identified groups; and
  • foster a climate of equity and inclusion in the organization.

Humber College complies voluntarily with the Employment Equity Act under the Federal Contractors Program.

It is with mixed emotions that I announce that Eileen DeCourcy, Associate Vice President (AVP) of Teaching and Learning has accepted the role of Vice President, Academic at St. Lawrence College. While I am thrilled for Eileen’s contributions to Ontario’s college sector to continue in this exciting new position, we will certainly miss her passion for teaching and learning and commitment to supporting our faculty.

For the past decade, Eileen has been an academic leader here at Humber. First, as Director of Professional Development and more recently as AVP, Teaching and Learning, Eileen’s worked with countless faculty and staff on many important projects. Among her many accomplishments, Eileen led the development of our Digital Learning Plan, Academic Integrity Plan and several teacher training programs that have received national and international accreditation.

Under her leadership, The Centre for Teaching and Learning has expanded into a vibrant hub supporting not just Humber faculty, but twelve institutions across the globe. As a champion of the scholarship of teaching and learning, Eileen helped breathe new life into the Humber Press and launch the Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education; the first-of-its-kind academic journal dedicated to the study of polytechnic education in Canada

Eileen has been instrumental in redesigning our classrooms, ensuring that our learning spaces matched the cutting edge curriculum being developed here at Humber. Thanks to her role in the creation of Humber’s first VR lab and integration of VR into the curricular experience, Humber students have been able to engage in experiential learning in new and important ways.

Eileen will be starting at St. Lawrence mid-November. Over the next weeks, Eileen will be working with her team and myself to prepare for her departure. Please join me in congratulating Eileen on her new role.

Barrett CTI poster showing the artist rendering of the building and an image of the building currently under construction

As construction continues on the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation (Barrett CTI), the building is even closer to becoming a powerhouse of innovation for Humber. Students, faculty and staff will work together with companies large and small to help with the technological and innovation challenges facing Canada’s manufacturing industry and beyond.

Partnerships with CiscoFesto Didactic and SEW-EURODRIVE are already in place, and additional partnerships will be announced soon. This means the Barrett CTI will be home to technology that is not available at any other postsecondary institution in Canada.

Once complete in early 2019, the Barrett CTI’s 93,000 square-foot space will feature a datacentre, cyber physical factory, automated guided vehicles, prototyping labs, makerspaces, interactive technology zones and digital media studios.

Click here for the latest photos of the construction in progress and renderings of what the space will look like once complete. Click here to watch the construction as it happens.
