Dr. Emma Smith has accepted a new role as Associate Dean for the Office of Research and Innovation. Emma’s award-winning contributions to research at Humber and her passions for collaboration, with students and faculty, make her an ideal candidate for this new role.

Emma first joined Humber in 2015 as a Field Placement Coordinator with the Faculty of Social and Community Services (FSCS). In 2018, she became a full-time Faculty member for the Bachelor of Social Science – Criminal Justice degree program, later becoming the Program Coordinator in 2019. In 2023 Emma seconded into the role of Academic Program Manager for FSCS, where she has provided invaluable support to our Social Services Program portfolio.

Emma holds a PhD in Communication and Culture from Toronto Metropolitan University and York University. This summer, she and Dr. Doug Thomson were awarded the Humber President’s Research Award for their work with the Toronto Police Service on the expansion of the Neighbourhood Community Officer Program.

Emma will undoubtedly be missed by all within FSCS, but we are also so excited to see the great work she will do in her new role within ORI.

Please join me in congratulating Emma, as she will be moving to her new role with ORI starting Oct 10th, 2023. The APM position, as well as the FT Faculty position with BSS-CJ, will be posted in the coming days, to ensure continuity of business in the Faculty of Social and Community Services.

The first cycle of the Leadership Initiation Fund is now open for applications.

The Leadership Initiative Fund (LIF) is a new program that provides funding for students who wish to run an initiative or event on campus. The LIF is administered by the Department of Student Life and Equity, Humber College. The LIF program recognizes the importance of student involvement and engagement in the creation of a vibrant campus community. This funding aims to support students whose initiatives or events will contribute to our institutional and community values. If successful, students will have the opportunity to host their program on campus, and learn the ins and outs of how to create, run, and evaluate their own program.

All funded projects must support the creation of a Healthy and Inclusive Community and submissions must fall under one of the three pillars: 1. 2. 3. Decisions for the awarding of funds are made by the LIF committee, which is made up of staff from the Department of Student Life and Equity, as well as IGNITE.

The Wear it Sustainable: Pop-up thrift store is an example of an initiative funded by LIF and hosted by Humber fashion students and the Humber styling squad. Visit our recap of the event on Instagram or scan this QR code:

The first cycle of applications will close on October 20.

For more information, visit: https://humber.ca/leadershipprograms

If you have any inquiries about LIF, please contact lead@humber.ca.

Our flags will be lowered on Sunday, September 24 in honour of Police and Peace Officers' National Memorial Day.

On September 24, 1998, the Government of Canada officially proclaimed the last Sunday of September of every year as Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day. This National Memorial Day gives Canadians an opportunity each year to formally express appreciation for the dedication of police and peace officers, which made the ultimate tragic sacrifice to keep our communities safe.
