Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber are committed to the principles of human rights, equity, inclusion and belonging. Last weekend, September 15-17, and this coming Sunday and Monday, September 24-25 marks Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, respectively. Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Together, they are known as the Jewish High Holidays. Rosh Hashanah celebrations are noted by eating apples and honey to wish the community a sweet and healthy New Year, and the blowing of the Shofar, a ram’s horn, to signify when the Jewish people received the Torah. Yom Kippur is a day of fasting, prayer, reflection and forgiveness with members of the Jewish community asking to be inscribed into the Book of Life.

Many Humber students, faculty and staff will be participating in Yom Kippur along with Jewish people around the world.

The Humber community is encouraged to learn more about the High Holidays

Please be mindful that students, faculty and staff may require accommodations such as time off or extensions to participate in Yom Kippur. If you have questions regarding the duty to accommodate based on religion, please contact Jason Seright, vice-president, Inclusion and Belonging, at jason.seright@humber.ca

On behalf of the Inclusion and Belonging portfolio, People(s) and Culture, and Student Success & Engagement, we wish the members of the Jewish community a sweet New Year and all the best on Yom Kippur.

Ten Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology students are the inaugural recipients of scholarships through the Schulich Builders: Scholarships for Skilled Trades program.

Recognizing a decline in the number of skilled workers in Canada, particularly tradespeople, Schulich Builders Scholarships are Canada's largest skilled trade scholarship program and address the worker shortage by amplifying the importance and value of pursuing a career in the skilled trades through financial and leadership support.

In total, 10 Ontario colleges were selected to participate in the Schulich Builders program. Each college receives funding to support 10 scholarships each year to cover tuition, tools and living expenses for students enrolled in a full-time skilled trades program. Five scholarships at $20,000 each are intended for students enrolled in a one-year certificate program, and five scholarships valued at $40,000 are directed for students in two-year diploma programs.

“Skilled trades are a critical part of driving the Ontario economy forward and Humber is proud to prepare students for these careers," said Ann Marie Vaughan, president and CEO, Humber College. "We are pleased that The Schulich Foundation shares this commitment and is providing a competitive advantage to students pursuing these important jobs of tomorrow. As prominent leaders, The Schulich Foundation’s efforts will raise the profile for skilled trades occupations in Ontario.”

Dear colleagues,

We understand that the evolving situation between the governments of Canada and India has left some of our staff and students concerned about potential impacts on them. Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber work to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for our community no matter where they come from.

Students from around the world come to Humber to receive a world-class education from our instructors, many of whom also come from abroad and have close connections around the globe.

We are monitoring the ongoing situation between Canada and India. Humber will continue to communicate with you as the situation evolves and we commit to ensuring that you have accurate information as quickly as possible.

We are also closely watching any potential impacts on our instructors and staff, who may be working on programs and recruitment initiatives within India.

The Humber community supports the many students and employees at Humber with direct and indirect ties to India, and we will continue to foster a safe and inclusive environment and support students and employees who are impacted by this ongoing situation.

We are here to provide support to students and staff who may need it. If students ask you about available supports, please direct them to the list below. Staff are encouraged to access the Employee Assistance Plan services or to connect with their manager for support as needed.

Students can also reach out for support through the International Centre at the North (Second Floor, LRC) and Lakeshore (H100A) campuses and through the support hubs at the International Graduate School (IGS). If you are looking for a space to pause and reflect, please feel free to visit the Spirituality and Wellness Centre at the North Campus in LRC 2112, the prayer room in HB102 at Lakeshore or the multipurpose room at the IGS.

One of the things that makes Humber great is the diversity of our learners and the value that their perspectives bring to our classrooms. We encourage the Humber community to continue to support one another.

Be well and take care,

Jennifer O’Brien
Vice-President, People(s) and Culture

Please join me in welcoming Lucas Anderson to Humber!

On October 2, Lucas will start as Director, Public Affairs with the Government Relations, Marketing and Communications Department, and will be part of the External Affairs and Professional Learning leadership team.

Lucas comes to Humber from York University where he is currently Assistant Director, Government Relations and has been with the University since 2018. Working in the Office of the President, Lucas prepared strategic plans and budget submissions to advance institutional goals by influencing government policy at the federal and provincial levels. He was responsible for the creation and implementation of the university’s government relations strategy as well as York’s first-ever Economic and Social Impact Report. Lucas’ work helped support infrastructure projects, including the establishment of the Markham Campus, work-integrated learning opportunities and the creation of new academic programs.

Prior to York, Lucas held several advisory roles in the Government of Ontario, including Policy Advisor to the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, and Senior Advisor to the President of Treasury Board.

Lucas also has significant experience working entrepreneurially to deliver outcomes, including holding leadership roles in both federal and provincial political campaigns and implementing the first online voting system at Queen’s University.

Lucas has a Master’s in Public Policy from the University of Toronto and is an alumnus of Queen’s University, where he studied political theory and economics during his undergraduate degree.

I am delighted that Lucas is bringing his talents and experience to this important role at Humber.
