Apply for scholarships now - help cover tuition and learning costs

We are pleased to announce that winter scholarship applications will be open January 5 to February 2. Please help spread the word to your students!

Last year, more than 1,000 scholarships were awarded to Humber students.

These scholarships were made possible by Humber’s incredibly supportive community of donors and alumni, including our very own faculty and staff who donate through Humber Gives

This semester, we have even more scholarships waiting to be matched with just the right student!

Scholarships not only support students financially, but they help students reach their full potential.

Please support your students by encouraging them to apply for scholarships by February 2.

On behalf of the Department of Public Safety, we would like to thank the Humber community for bringing in food and toy donations for our 2023 Holiday Drive. Because of your generous support, we will be able to help many children and families from the local area.

In addition to the donations collected at the Humber Staff and Faculty Holiday party, donations collected after the event were picked up by Toronto Police's 23 and 22 Division who will ensure that they get distributed to children and families in need before for the Holidays.

Special thanks to the entire Public Safety team, especially to Cassandra Dias for organizing the drive at each campus. A big thank you to our friends from the Academic Division, ITS, Marketing and Communications and Legal and Risk for their generous support in helping collect donations. We really appreciate all the support from the Humber community. Together, we were able to fill 4 TPS vehicles filled with donations.

We look forward to doing it all again next year!

The Department of Public Safety wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday season.

Sincerely,

Rob Kilfoyle, CPP
Director, Public Safety and Emergency Management

A blue heart with words

Description automatically generated with low confidence

  • Write in a gratitude journal and meditation
  • Reflect on the past year and set positive intentions and goals for the upcoming year
  • Activities that bring joy, including reading, painting, writing, baking, winter camping, and spending time in nature
  • Not stressing about doing all wellness related activities and instead focus on establishing a sustainable routine
  • Limit screen time and disconnect from social media
  • Regular self-check-ins to assess mental and emotional well-being, and re-adjust self-care strategies as needed
  • When hosting holiday gatherings, ask for help with preparation, cooking and clean-up - being a great host/hostess does not mean doing it all yourself
  • Set boundaries for socialization to take personal time – not trying to see everyone and do everything

A yellow heart with blue text

Description automatically generated with low confidence

  • 8-10 hours of sleep to rest and recharge, and take naps/rest when needed
  • Drink more water
  • Maintain physical fitness by going for winter walks and finding new trails, skating, dancing, going to the gym and lifting weights, practicing yoga, and playing basketball
  • Home cooked meals and prioritize nutrition as much as possible

A green heart with blue text

  • Set realistic financial goals for 2024

  • Spend quality time with family and friends, including:
    • Complete a giant holiday crossword with family
    • Snuggle with pets
    • Visit my home country of India after 5+ years
    • Go to a Raptors game
    • Cookie-baking party
  • With so many tragic conflicts in the world, not taking for granted the privilege to spend time with family
  • Connect with loved ones who are uplifting and supportive and express gratitude for them
  • Donate to a toy drive to bring joy to some families this holiday season
  • Re-enforce boundaries when visiting with family members

Overall, many employees said they plan to keep their holidays balanced with some time to focus on fun activities and checking things off their to-do lists, while also ensuring they have lots of time to relax and recharge.

We hope well-being continues to be a priority throughout 2024.

I am writing today to advise the Humber community that Jason Powell, Senior Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellness, will be leaving Humber in the new year.

Jason’s commitment to Humber is longstanding. His journey began when as a student in 1993 he completed the Nursing diploma program. In 2002, he began working as a contract faculty member supporting pre-graduate nursing students in practice, teaching Coronary Care in Continuing Education, and teaching in the Nursing diploma program.

After completing his Master of Science (Nursing) in 2005, Jason became a full-time faculty member, and assumed Program Coordinator responsibilities for the Practical Nursing Diploma Program. He became Dean of the School of Health Sciences in May 2011. For the past 13 years, under Jason’s strategic leadership the Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellness has experienced unprecedented growth, adding credentials in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Systems Navigation, Hearing Instrument Specialist, Health Sector Regulatory Compliance, and most recently, a Baccalaureate degree in Biomedical Sciences, and postgraduate certificates in Infection Prevention & Control, and Clinical Bioinformatics. A source of pride for Jason, during his tenure as Senior Dean, Humber successfully obtained approval to offer the first standalone college Nursing Honours Degree (BScN) in the province.

Jason was pivotal in the creation of innovative laboratories and teaching spaces. In 2018, F-wing opened, with state-of-the-art Bioscience labs, a Funeral Services suite equipped with an embalming lab and cosmetology lab, and Humber’s first HIVES (Humber Interactive Spaces), providing dynamic learning environments for students. The Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellness has consistently offered innovative programming and has demonstrated a commitment to transformation that is responsive to shifting labour market and community needs, producing career-ready graduates prepared to serve Ontarians in their health and wellness journeys.

Throughout his leadership journey, Jason has been an inspirational figure, consistently striving for excellence, fostering innovation, and promoting collaboration within Humber and with community partners. He generously shares the vast knowledge gained throughout his career in the Ontario college sector and as a Registered Nurse. His service-driven and forward-thinking approach, and his boundless energy, will be missed.

The next chapter of Jason’s career will see him seek international nursing and postsecondary opportunities. Please join me in wishing him well as he transitions from his role as Senior Dean in early 2024.

As Jason departs, I’m pleased to share that Kristan Lingard will take on the role of Acting Senior Dean, effective January 3, 2024. Please join me in welcoming Kristan to this new role.
