Cyber Security Awareness Month (#CyberMonth2023) is an internationally recognized campaign held every October to help the public learn more about the importance of cyber security. Humber’s objective is to raise awareness of the importance of cybersecurity, and to ensure our community has the resources and expertise required to protect the organization and themselves against cyber attacks. By protecting yourself and your organization against phishing scams, you can foil a cyber criminal’s plans. With this objective in mind, Humber will be providing several cybersecurity themed activities throughout the month of October. Our hope is that all employees participate and master the art of spotting cyber attacks.

Initiative 1: Delivery of an Education Program

Once again as in the previous years, Humber has partnered with the Government of Canada’s Communications Security Establishment to provide our community with resources and activities to support the national Get Cyber Safe initiative and further bolster Humber’s Security. The theme for #CyberMonth2023 is Step up your cyber fitness. Here are the sub-themes in which we will be reflecting upon each week:

  • September 29: #CyberMonth2023 Launch
  • Week of October 2: Warmup
  • Week of October 9: Account workout
  • Week of October 16: Learning self-defence
  • Week of October 23: Maintaining muscle
  • Week of October 30: Strength in numbers

Throughout October, ITS will provide access to training videos, infographics and activities based on the sub-themes above. The delivery format will be on a weekly basis (as per sub-themes) through our training platform KnowBe4. Employees should expect to receive training enrollment and reminder emails from IT Security <do-not-reply@training.knowbe4.com>.

Initiative 2: Phishing Simulations

Throughout the month of October, Humber will deliver several simulated phishing emails to your Humber mailbox.  These simulations will allow you to apply your cybersecurity knowledge to real world scenarios without the risks associated with a real cyber-attack. When you believe that you’ve received a phishing email, employees are encouraged to report them utilizing the Phish Alert Button (PAB) in MS Outlook.

Finally, and Most Importantly Win Prizes!

As a small token of our appreciation of your continued support of our cybersecurity initiatives, weekly raffles prizes will be made available. You can earn raffle entries each week for completing and participating in our initiatives - the more you participate, the more entries you can earn. During the final week, a grand prize will be drawn, and all your accumulated raffle entries throughout the month will be eligible.

To support our planned activities and to experiment with new technologies, we will once again be delivering some additional materials within Microsoft Teams thereby enabling collaboration, an open dialogue and engagement. To participate, join the GetCyberSafe Microsoft Team, and we will keep you informed as we release new material and activities. To join the Team, do one of the following:

Option 1

Using Microsoft Teams Link

  • Follow this link: GetCyberSafe
  • This link will take you directly into teams.

Sounds Suspicious Right? That’s why we’ve included option 2.

Option 2

Using Teams Code

  • Open Teams (or access Teams through the Office Portal)
  • On the left side of the app, click the Teams icon Teams button
  • Click Join or create a Team
  • Go to Join a team with a code (the second tile)
  • In the Enter code box, type the code: f16dht6.
  • Click Join
  • Go to the Channel #CyberMonth2023

Note: Those that participated last year may already be a member of our GetCyberSafe team.  We have created a new channel (#CyberMonth2023), and reused the previous team, and hoped to utilize this team for more than just the Month of October in the future.  While October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, cybercrime happens 365 days a year.

Flags will be at half-mast on Friday, September 30 to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The Government of Canada passed legislation to make September 30 a federal statutory holiday called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day is an important step in the reconciliation process. It provides an opportunity to recognize and commemorate the tragic history and ongoing legacy of residential schools, and to honour their survivors, their families and communities.

Dear academic community,

The Test Centre operates on an appointment-based system that integrates seamlessly with our learning management systems. To ensure learners have access to the Test Centre, faculty must first submit their exam to Testing Services via our portal.

Here's how it works:

1. Integrate the Testing Services Link (Humber faculty only):

  • Log in to your Blackboard account.
  • Access your course's Course Content page.
  • Navigate to Content Market.
  • Locate the Testing Services Tool.
  • Click the "+" sign on the bottom right of the Testing Services Tool.
  • Testing Services is now integrated into your course.
  • Repeat this process for all your courses.

2. Activate the Link (Humber faculty only):

  • Ensure the Testing Services link is set to "Visible to students" or set "Release Conditions" for specific students.
  • Repeat this process for all your courses.

3. Submit an Exam:

  • Click on the Testing Services link in your Course Content.
  • You will be directed to the Test Submission page.
  • Click on the blue "+" sign at the top right corner.
  • You will be directed to the Submission Builder page.
  • Add all the required information, including the test name, the course, start and end dates for the booking period, the test duration, test documents, and exam instructions.
  • Click "Submit."

Upon successful submission, you'll receive a confirmation email. Our Testing Services team will review it within one business day and notify you of any issues. Once approved, you'll receive a confirmation email, and you can let your learners know they can book their exam by clicking on the Testing Services link in their course content.

It was with sadness that we are announcing the departure of Terrence Shipclark, Manager of IT (Information Technology) Security from Humber College.  After a long and successful 15 years with Humber College, Terrence is leaving the college as of September 29, 2023, to pursue other opportunities.

Terry first came to Humber College as a student and became an employee in 2008. For the past four years, Terry has been dedicated to building, leading, and growing a fantastic security team which has led to incredible achievements including the implementation of a vulnerability management system, security awareness platform and an endpoint detection and response tool. Terry’s passion for security has helped to make our campus safer for everyone. Humber’s security practices would not be what they are today without Terrence’s knowledge, passion, and leadership.

Humber will not be the same without Terry, but we are happy for him to embark on the next part of his journey.

Please join us in thanking Terrence for his many years of loyal and dedicated service to Humber. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

Warmly,

Michelle Ching’anda
Director IT Security and Strategic Lead, Enterprise Web Project

The Humber Research Ethics Board (HREB) has an institutional mandate to conduct an ethics review of all proposals for research involving human participants which will be conducted within the Humber Community, with the use of Humber resources or otherwise under the auspices of Humber. The HREB reviews research applications to ensure that all ethical issues are adequately identified and addressed. Serving on the HREB offers an excellent opportunity for Humber faculty to demonstrate a strong commitment to the institution and make a significant contribution to supporting the development of a strong research ethics framework at Humber.

The HREB is seeking to recruit four (4) full-time members. Applications are invited from all interested Humber full-time faculty who meet the following eligibility criteria:

(i) minimum of a Master’s Degree; and

(ii) experience in conducting research.

HREB Members are appointed for an initial term of two years and are eligible for two renewals up to a maximum period of six years. If interested, please submit a Curriculum Vitae to reb@humber.ca by Friday, October 13, 2023.

The Maamwi Hub is inspired by the TRC 94 Calls to Action to ensure that the 24 Colleges of Ontario lead in the education of staff and students on the diverse Indigenous histories, cultures, and current Indigenous worldviews. The word "Maamwi" means "together" in Anishinaabemowin, one of the many spoken Indigenous languages in the territory currently referred to as Ontario.

The Maamwi Hub includes:

  • Learning resources on the history, culture and perspectives of Indigenous Peoples.
  • Learning resources on conducting research respectfully and responsibly.
  • Resources to support curriculum development that promotes Indigenous awareness.
  • Resources to connect, collaborate and support each other on the path to reconciliation.

We hope that the Maamwi Hub will be a part of your ongoing reconciliation journey. It serves as a pathway to an authentic commitment to learn and reflect on the past and present impacts of colonial history on Indigenous Peoples in Canada, and to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Indigenous cultures, knowledges, and worldviews.

The Maamwi Hub came to fruition in 2022 to serve the information needs of the 24 Colleges in Ontario including students, faculty, researchers, and local Indigenous communities. From its inception, the new Hub was developed in close consultation with the Ontario College’s Indigenous Peoples Education Circle (IPEC) and was directed by the Maamwi Steering Committee. The Maamwi Hub continues to grow and evolve through collaborations and consultations with various stakeholders.

As a community, we are deeply saddened by this loss and our thoughts and condolences go out to her family and loved ones during this difficult time.

To honour Elsy and her memory, on Friday, September 29, we will be lowering the flags at the college to half-mast. This gesture serves as a symbol of our respect and admiration for Elsy as she made a positive impact with those she encountered during her time with us.

Elsy’s family would like the Humber community to know that she loved to swim, dance, cook and especially loved to read. She is survived by her parents Cletus Nwana and Glory Mantan, and her two-year-old daughter Ndi Elinora Mbonie.
