Disability Services and the Office of Advancement & Alumni Relations are Pleased to Announce HSBC Bank Canada’s Support of Humber’s Easy Start Transition Program.

Humber College has received a gift of $45,000 from HSBC Bank Canada for its Easy Start Transition Program, an initiative to help students with disabilities make a successful transition to the postsecondary academic environment. Thanks to HSBC’s generous donation, students with disabilities will benefit from an introduction to Humber services, an increased awareness of the importance of self-advocacy, and a heightened awareness of the impact of their disability on their learning.

Students with disabilities often face unequal access to postsecondary education. The Easy Start Transition Program opens up educational opportunities for these students and helps them break down the barriers that can affect their ability to successfully complete their studies.

The program has already demonstrated success. In its first year of operation in 2012, 77 students participated in the program. With the gift from HSBC Bank Canada, 100 additional students with disabilities will benefit.

“The Easy Start Transition Program helps to transform lives and helps build a better future for Humber students, graduates and our community,” says Jason Hunter, Dean of Students. “We are truly grateful for HSBC’s generosity and commitment to increasing access to education.”

“HSBC believes that education is a fundamental building block of healthy communities,” said Mike Webb, Senior Vice President, Human Resources, HSBC Bank Canada. “We strongly support the mandate of the Easy Start Transition Program, and we are committed to helping remove barriers and improve access to opportunities for persons with disabilities in our communities, and in our workplace.”

The weather forecast in Toronto indicates the current high temperatures and humidity will persist into the weekend. This sustained weather condition is putting a significant strain on Toronto Hydro’s distribution system and is increasing the risk of power outages due to near record peak demands and the potential for electrical overloading.

We are reaching out to ask that we all try to make every effort to reduce energy use as members of the Toronto community, to do our part.

At work:

  • Remember to turn off all lights when you leave for the day, and in rooms you aren’t using. Work using only daylight if possible!
  • Remember to turn off your computer and monitors at the end of the day, and before you leave for the weekend.
  • Turn off and unplug any electronic equipment that you aren’t using. Anything with a light or clock on it is using energy all the time!
  • Are you too cold? Please don’t use a space heater if you are in an area that is typically cold. Please contact Facilities Management if you are uncomfortable!
  • Keep the windows closed, we don’t want to cool the outdoors!

At home:

  • Turn up your thermostat a few degrees. It’s ok to use air conditioning to stay cool, but not so much that you need to wear a sweater inside. Turn it off when you are not at home. As a rule of thumb, Toronto Hydro suggests your thermostat should be set to 25.5°C, or higher if comfort permits.
  • Only cool the rooms that you are using. Close vents to areas in your home that you aren’t going to be in.
  • Keep window shades drawn during the afternoon to minimize heat gain from the sun.
  • Use the cold setting on your washer and hang clothes to dry. Do your wash in the evenings.
  • Adjust your hot water thermostat so your water heater isn’t working as hard.
  • Avoid using heat producing appliances such as ovens and dishwashers during the hottest part of the day.
  • Use a fan to circulate air.
  • Check that your air conditioner filter is clean.

We all look forward to the sunny warm weather that comes with summer; however, high temperatures can pose a risk to workers, particularly for those whose jobs involve outdoor activities. When heat is combined with other stresses such as high humidity, physical exertion, fatigue, or lack of acclimatization, it can lead to heat-related illnesses.

The heating and cooling balance in our body depends on the amount of heat absorbed from the environment as well as the heat generated through physical activities. As our body heats up, it tries to cool itself through the evaporation of sweat. If body fluids and salts are not replaced, the body starts to overheat. Heat-related conditions include heat rash, fainting, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Depending on the condition, symptoms may include dizziness or fainting, nausea, weakness, heavy sweating, and rapid breathing.

Report heat stress concerns to your supervisor. If you experience symptoms of heat stress during extreme heat, move to a cool area, loosen your clothing, get cool water to drink, and get medical attention immediately.

Tips for Preventing Heat Stress:

  • It is important to note that an extreme heat alert has been issued for Toronto; starting Wednesday, July 16, 2013 and remains in effect until further notice.
  • Keep your body hydrated. Drink more water during hot days.
  • Wear breathable, light clothing that allows free movement of air. Air movement over the skin surface maximizes body heat removal by both evaporation and convection.
  • Schedule more strenuous activities during cooler times of the day.
  • Schedule frequent short breaks instead of a few longer breaks. Frequent short breaks away from the sun allow the body to cool down and prevent it from overheating.
  • Use sunscreen and keep your head covered.

If you work indoors and your work environment is at higher temperatures or humidity levels during the summer months, either because of mechanical failure or the lack of air-conditioning, inform your supervisor. Facilities Management or Health and Safety Services can assist in assessing the situation. Light clothing, hydration, fans, or breaks in a cooler environment can help reduce your discomfort.
