The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence against women is an international campaign originating from the first Women’s Global Leadership Institute. “16 Days,” as it has become known, was launched and continues to be coordinated by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership.
The dates for the campaign were chosen to link violence against women and human rights and emphasize that gender-based violence against women is a violation of human rights: since 1991, the campaign has been active between November 25, the International Day Against Violence Against Women, and December 10, International Human Rights Day. At Humber & Guelph-Humber, we recognize that gender-based violence (GBV) can affect everyone; however, some populations experience disproportionate levels of violence, including: women, Indigenous women, LGBT2SQ+ folks, women with disabilities, and racialized women. GBV can be physical, but also includes other efforts or actions to harm another person based on their gender, gender expression, gender identity, or perceived gender.
The Consent Peer Education Program (CPEP) is thrilled to unveil our virtual programming schedule for 2020's 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Over the course of the 16 Days, we will be engaging our students in conversations around gender-based violence through art, baking, a panel conversation, film, trivia, and a candelit vigil (with keynote speaker to be confirmed). Additionally, we will be encouraging our community to learn more about gender-based violence and take steps to address it through our "16 Days of Actions" initiative we'll be launching on our CPEP Instagram account (@cpepteam). Staff and faculty are welcome to attend our programming, and we appreciate your support in spreading the word with your students!
