Decolonizing Academic Integrity Practices: Considerations for Instructors, Administrators, and Institutional Leadership University
Erin Hagen
Academic Integrity Specialist
UBC Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia

Register now

As part of her Master's in Educational Leadership program, Erin compiled a resource asking instructors, administrators, and institutional leadership to consider how we perceive, discuss, and practice academic integrity in institutions, and what steps we can take to actively decolonize our methods. This presentation will encourage participants to reflect on their current practices and what steps our communities can take to ensure we are upholding equitable communities when fostering and responding to academic integrity. We’ll also review and discuss the limitations and roadblocks that show up in our communities and how we may still walk this path in the face of these challenges.

Learning outcomes for this session:

  1. Critically examine how traditional approaches to academic integrity may reflect colonial values and assumptions.
  2. Identify and articulate the ways in which academic integrity policies and practices can unintentionally marginalize certain student populations.
  3. Reflect on personal and institutional practices related to academic integrity through an equity and decolonization lens.
  4. Explore strategies for fostering inclusive and culturally responsive approaches to academic integrity in their own teaching or leadership contexts.
  5. Recognize systemic barriers and institutional limitations that hinder the decolonization of academic integrity practices.
  6. Commit to actionable steps toward creating more equitable and supportive academic environments that honour diverse ways of knowing and learning.

Biography

Erin has worked as a college and university administrator for over thirteen years in Vancouver, British Columbia. She currently works as an Academic Integrity Specialist for the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia. Prior to working at UBC, she organized BC Academic Integrity Day at Langara College in her role as a Student Case Coordinator in the Office of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity. She recently completed her Master of Educational Leadership with Vancouver Island University.

Jim Bialek smiling

Humber Athletics is set to immortalize a beloved figure in its athletic history, announcing that longtime sports information director Jim Bialek will be honoured with a banner-raising on Thursday, November 27, directly following the conclusion of the women's volleyball match against Fanshawe.

The tribute comes several years after Bialek retired in 2019, closing the book on a remarkable 40-year career at Humber Polytechnic. As the school's first full-time sports information director and the longest-serving member of the athletics department, Bialek was the steady, defining presence of Humber Athletics during its rise from a small local program to a national powerhouse.
