Wilderness Survival Skills - Monday, July 21 to Friday, July 25, 2025

This week we're taking on some fun challenges to explore strategies to survive in the wilderness. Work with others to construct a natural shelter that will protect you from the elements, learn how to find your way (without a phone), and discover what it takes to build a fire that would keep you warm inside and out during an emergency.

Join Humber’s Office of Sustainability on Thursday, July 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Humber Arboretum for a hands-on afternoon dedicated to protecting native ecosystems. During this workshop, you'll help remove invasive plant species such as phragmites, thistles, teasel, burdock, and garlic mustard. While contributing to the health of the Arboretum’s natural spaces, you’ll also gain insight into how invasive species affect biodiversity and what we can do to restore balance.

This is a great opportunity for students to earn Co-Curricular Record (CCR) credit while building practical skills in environmental restoration and stewardship. It is also a great team-building opportunity for staff and faculty. Come dressed for the outdoors (long pants, and comfortable shoes), and don’t forget to bring a water bottle, sun protection, and gardening gloves if you have them. Let’s work together to make a positive impact on our local environment!

The Art of Nature - Monday, July 7 to Friday, July 11, 2025

Connecting with nature through storytelling and art are always part of camp, but this week these creative explorations will be in the spotlight. Campers of different ages will be making art with natural dyes, sculpting with river clay, trying out woodcarving, and much more. Plus we'll be practicing our storytelling skills to share our great nature experiences of the past and our new discoveries from the week with each other.

This week of camp will also include one of two sessions of Junior Naturalists, which is exclusively for 12- to 14-year-olds. Led by a Humber Arboretum Nature Educator with support from camp leaders, Junior Naturalist Camp takes a more in-depth look at each week's theme and is ideal for youth who are already passionate about exploring nature and spending time outside.
