Accessible Learning Services shares some best practices considerations:

  • Neurodiversity was first coined by Australian sociologist Judy Singer in the 1990s. It emphasizes that everyone has a unique brain composed of diverse strengths and weaknesses.

  • The Cleveland Clinic defines Neurodivergent as “a nonmedical term that describes people whose brains develop or work differently”. This includes individuals who report having ASD, ADHD, LD and some mental health conditions.

  • Neurodivergent ways of thinking can bring new perspectives to the labour force and fuel innovation.

Humber College and University of Guelph-Humber staff and faculty are invited to participate in the Print Management User Experience Survey

Humber’s Office of Sustainability and Information Technology Services are developing an institution-wide print strategy with the goals of better understanding the college’s current and future print-related needs.

This project has four main principles; boosting productivity, increasing security, positively impacting the environment, and reducing costs as they relate to our internal printing and scanning.

As part of this process, surveys, and interviews with administrative staff, support staff, faculty, and students are taking place to understand the print, copy, and scanning needs of Humber College and University of Guelph-Humber.

The survey will examine your experience using printing and scanning services on campus and will take no longer than 10 minutes.

The survey will close on June 6, 2023 at 11:59 p.m.

"Did you know? Helpful HR-related information and best practices" poster

Welcome to the monthly series of “Did you know? Helpful HR-related information and best practices.” Every month, there is a Communiqué Announcement posted that covers tips, best practices, and general HR-related topics.

This month’s topics include important information about employee vacation planning and carry-over requests.

For future topic ideas, we would like to hear from YOU!

If there is any general HR-related information that you think would be helpful for yourself and/or your colleagues, please email your suggestions to oe@humber.ca.

Understanding Vacation Planning and Vacation Carry-Over Requests

Did you know that planning your vacation early helps to ensure that you have a set time to rest and further helps to build a healthy work-life balance?

Employees are encouraged to fully utilize their annual vacation allotment in order to have time away from work to focus on personal and individual responsibilities as well as to rest and recharge. To ensure adequate departmental coverage, employees should indicate their preferred vacation time as early as possible, in discussion with their manager.

Vacation Carry-Over Requests

Administrative Employees

Administrative employees who wish to apply for a Vacation Carry-Over Exception need to consult their reporting manager to complete and submit the Vacation Carry-Over Exception Form, by June 1, 2023.

Employees and managers should ensure that all required information has been captured on the exception form prior to submission: vacation carry-over details, reason(s) for the request, a plan for using excess carry-over days and the manager’s recommendations/comments.

All requests must be approved by the employee’s manager and their Vice-President, and the Vice-President, People(s) and Culture.

Unionized Employees

The vacation carry-over requirements and limits for unionized employees are covered within the respective Collective Agreement. Therefore, unionized employees are not required to submit a Vacation Carry-Over Exception Form.

If you have any questions, please contact the HR Support Centre. Tune in next month for more helpful HR-related information.

LGBTQ+ Resource Centre and 2SLGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group (ERG) at Humber celebrate Pride Month in June 2023. We honour the identities and self-expression of two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual members of our community, students, staff, and faculty.

Humber College’s theme for Pride 2023 is “Queer Joy.” Amid growing curbs on the freedoms of 2SLGBTQIA+ people in the US and around the world, it is more important than ever that institutions like Humber make space for the celebration of queer life. 2SLGBTQIA+ people both inside and outside of Humber need to have their celebrations and happiness be an integral part of the wider community. When faced with forces that seek to restrict, invalidate or erase their lives, queer joy is a radical act. Realized fully, queer joy can continue to shape Humber into a more accepting, healthy and resilient community.

In particular, we celebrate queer communities of colour, migrant 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, trans, intersex, and disabled queer folks who still navigate intersectional barriers in their everyday lives. We also acknowledge that Pride takes place on Indigenous lands, and that Pride Month takes place during National Indigenous History Month. We believe that reclaiming Indigenous two-spirit identities and traditions is central to the ongoing process of reconciliation and decolonization of 2SLGBTQIA+ movements.

We invite the Humber community to contribute and join Humber’s 2SLGBTQ+ ERG & The LGBTQ+ Resource Centre for the Annual Pride and Trans Flag Raising on June 1. The flag-raising is a symbolic representation of Humber’s support for 2SLGBTQIA+ students, staff, faculty, and the broader community.

This event is open to all students, staff, faculty, administration, and community members. It will be approximately 30 minutes and during this time there will be speakers from 2SLGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group, LGBTQ+ Resource Centre, IGNITE, and students.

We hope to see you there! Time & Locations:

Thursday, June 1:

North Campus: 11 a.m. (in front of the LRC Building)

Lakeshore: 11 a.m. (In front of the Welcome Building)
