In early December 2021, Humber officially launched a group for employees who identify as white and/or as having white skin privilege to examine how they have been conditioned by their whiteness and how it shows up in their thoughts, feelings, and experiences, and within their institutions (home, work, educational, religious, etc.). The Unlearning Circle focuses on unpacking and dismantling white supremacy culture and unlearning it.

Interested in joining the circle or have questions about it? For more information email theunlearningcircle@humber.ca, or visit our webpage to learn more and access past meeting materials.

Next session: The Circle will hold its eleventh session virtually on Tuesday, January 17 from 12:05 p.m. to 1:25 p.m.

Welcome back, Humber.

I hope you all had a relaxing winter break and you found time to recharge during your time off. The entire Humber community including students, faculty and staff, worked exceptionally hard last year to ensure that the College maintained its leadership role in polytechnic education. You earned that break.

With a new year comes a new term. Winter 2023 Orientation is underway this week for our incoming students, and it brings me back to my time as a student and the excitement and possibilities that came with starting a thrilling and new adventure in post-secondary education.

We will continue to make it our priority to support our learners so they can bring their best every day and embrace the possibilities a Humber education can mean for their future.

Looking ahead for a moment, I am happy to share that this year Friday, June 30, 2023, will be an Employee Appreciation Day. The College will be closed on that day, and Humber employees will have an extra day off for the Canada Day long weekend in recognition of your dedication to the institution, and to show our appreciation for your hard work. I know many of you begin to plan your summer vacations at the start of the new year, so I wanted to be sure to share this information as soon as possible.

I have learned a lot about Humber over the Fall semester. The breadth and depth of talent, along with the innovation and creativity within the Humber community is inspiring. There have been so many amazing moments of learning and connections with all of you that I will treasure forever. Thank you to every one of you who make Humber the truly exceptional place that it is.

I am excited for 2023 and what will be my first full year as the President and CEO of Humber. In the coming months, I look forward to having conversations across the college community about the future and what we envision and dream for Humber and the communities we serve. While the challenges are many, the opportunities and talent within Humber gives me the confidence that we will continue to be the national and global leader in polytechnic education. The fundamental question before us is, what will the future look like?

The future of the College and its community of learners, educators and staff is remarkably bright, and I look forward to all we can accomplish together this year and beyond.

Thank you and best wishes for the term,

Dr. Ann Marie Vaughan
President and CEO, Humber I.T.A.L.

Dear Humber community,

I’m writing today to share with you that FSCS Associate Dean, Nora Simpson, is leaving Humber College on February 3, 2023. Nora will be taking on the role of Dean, Professional and Part-time Learning at Durham College.

Nora began at Humber over 10 years ago, as the Associate Director of Accessible Learning Services and shifted to her current role as Associate Dean in 2018. During her time as Associate Dean, Nora has overseen many of the programs offered in the Faculty of Social and Community Services.

Nora’s passion was always evident with her commitment to access and pathways for learners. Leading the development of and launching the Bachelor of Social Science, Addictions & Mental Health degree, several pathways within the Human Services cluster, and creation of 2 + 2 diploma to degree pathways to name a few.

Nora's commitment to change through committee participation has been evident throughout her career at Humber. Most recently, Nora has been an instrumental member of the FSCS realignment initiative, ensuring that we continue to strategically shift and grow to adapt to our current needs.

While she will be deeply missed at Humber, we are excited for Nora as she moves forward in her professional career at Durham College. To ensure leadership and continuity of programming we have posted for the FSCS Associate Dean role.

We are immensely grateful for all the contributions that Nora has made during her time at Humber, and we hope you’ll take the time to wish Nora well in her next chapter.

Sincerely,

June MacDonald-Jenkins

Humber Financial Services is pleased to announce an update to Humber College’s Purchasing Policy and Procedures (PP&P).

The update includes the introduction of Social Procurement, clarity around Vendor of Record usage, PCard guidelines, revisions to the Purchasing Thresholds and much more.

Effective immediately, three (3) quotes will be required for goods and non-consultant services greater than $20,000 (previously $5,000) and up to $100,000 (before taxes).

To support the changes, we are releasing two training programs on the Broader Public Sector (BPS) Directive and PP&P.

The BPS Training will give leaders and managers an overview of the legislated set of requirements to ensure that BPS organizations who acquire publicly funded goods and services go through a process that is open, fair and transparent.

The PP&P Training will give departmental managers and requisitioners an overview of the revisions and key points on the new Purchasing Policy and Procedure.

Staff required to complete the training will receive an email invite from GO1 (from Humber College <noreply@mygo1.com>) for each of the two training programs.  The email will contain a quick link to the training program.

Dear Humber community,

I am excited to announce that Meaghan Catalano-Perez will be assuming the role of Manager of Work-Integrated Learning within the Faculty of Social & Community Services on January 9, 2023. Meaghan joined Humber in June of 2022 as an Academic Program Manager and worked very closely with Associate Dean, Nora Simpson, on transforming the CPL unit to be responsive to current learners’ needs and proactive in planning future roadmaps. Prior to joining Humber, for more than fourteen years, Meaghan worked in various roles at Springboard Services, as well as at Lakeshore Area Multi-Service Project, supporting community capacity building and employment for at-risk and vulnerable youth and adults.

I want to extend a sincere thank you to Diana Balingit for her leadership over the past few months as the Interim WIL Manager. Diana was instrumental in ensuring our WIL operations and team were supported and successful during this transition period. As of January 9, Diana will return to her role as Field Placement Coordinator.

Please join me in congratulating Meaghan and wishing her the best of luck in this role.

Kind regards,

June MacDonald-Jenkins (she/her)
