We are excited to announce that Humber College was named one of Canada's Greenest Employers for the eighth year in a row! The award recognizes employers that lead the nation in making environmental values part of their organizational culture.

"Sustainability is one of our core values and an essential part of Humber's identity," says Lindsay Walker, associate director, Sustainability. "It’s ingrained in our behaviour, culture, and practices. Our commitment to sustainability also extends to the way we educate our students. We want to prepare them for the future and help them understand their power to make a positive impact on the world, no matter which field they enter.”

Some of Humber’s sustainability highlights include:

SWITCH Decarbonization Project

SWITCH is a bold infrastructure project that directly addresses the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions at the North Campus: the heating and cooling system. SWITCH will reduce fossil fuels by 70 per cent at the North campus.

The Humber Cultural Hub

The Humber Cultural Hub project will be one of the most sustainable developments in the country. It is designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification, Toronto Green Standards, and Net Zero carbon targets.

Reusable Container Programs

In the effort to reduce single-use packaging waste that ends up in the landfills, Humber implemented two programs: O2GO at North Campus and Friendlier at Lakeshore.

Humber is a Bee Campus

Humber became a designated Bee Campus in the Fall of 2021. To educate the public about bees, Humber installed hives at our North and Lakeshore campuses as well as in the Arboretum. All hives are to be reared using organic and ethical practices. We are excited to partner with Bee City Canada to ensure we are advocating for native species in the 250 acres of natural space surrounding Humber’s campuses.

2019-2024 Sustainability Plan

The 2019–2024 Sustainability Plan outlines a bold approach to reimagine our future to shape healthy, inclusive and sustainable communities. The plan outlines over 100 actions the college community is committed to achieving by 2024, taking on the shared responsibility to own and reflect our values in our actions.

Please view the 2019-2024 Humber Sustainability Plan and Supporting Actions to learn more about Humber's long-term sustainability vision and goals.

Hello Humber community,

Please join me in welcoming our newest Associate Dean to FSCS, Sally Abu Sabaa, who will join us officially on Monday, May 1. Sally comes to us from Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) where she has been the Associate Director, Student Success, and Program Innovation for the past two years. A seasoned leader in post-secondary education, Sally brings a wealth of knowledge regarding supporting international and immigrant settler populations in the post-secondary environment. She recently led the overall restructuring and creation of the academic and administrative structures of the English Language Institute (ELI), introducing multiple student support and operational positions that would cover ESL international student lifecycle in pathway programs and create an opportunity for special professional language training programs. With our keen focus on supporting our expanding International student population and providing more pathway opportunities, Sally’s recent work will be a considerable asset in supporting those efforts.

Prior to her time at TMU, she spent five years at York University as a manager and people leader looking at alternative delivery methodologies for English for Academic Purposes learners and provided leadership in the overall direction and delivery of all aspects of the York University Bridge (YUB) program achieving considerable growth during her tenure, making it the largest pathway program of its kind in North America.

With more than 10 years of experience as an educator and a learner, she is well-versed in the challenges, opportunities, and supports required to ensure faculty and students have the best possible experience in the learning environment. Sally’s portfolio will include the Social Service Worker, Bachelor of Behavioural Science, Addictions and Mental Health (Post Graduate Certificate and Bachelor), and the Developmental Service Worker programs.

Please join me in warmly welcoming Sally to Humber and the FSCS.

As part of Humber College's commitment to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB), the Office of Research & Innovation (ORI) seeks an EDIB research project lead. The research project lead will co-create a research engagement and mentorship program and conduct a pilot to assess EDIB programming for diverse groups of Humber College students, who participate in applied research.

We invite all interested Humber faculty and staff members to express their interest in the Research Project Lead – EDIB opportunity.

In collaboration with the Dean (ORI), Associate Dean (Applied Research), the ORI research project team, and working alongside campus partners, the EDIB Research Project Lead will:

  • Provide strategic advice and support on establishing and delivering an EDIB engagement plan for Humber College student researchers from equity-deserving groups
  • Co-create a tailored mentorship program for Humber College students who participate in applied research
  • Engage students through ORI training workshops and outreach activities
  • Develop programs to formally recognize skills acquisition

Relevant Experience:

  • Lived experience and understanding of equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism and discrimination principles
  • Previous research experience in EDIB and ability to lead a research project team
  • Experience in a post-secondary setting working with diverse student groups
  • Strong project management skills to co-create and deliver workshops and presentations
  • Experience developing programming from an anti-oppressive lens, working with EDI frameworks and/or working as part of a peer-mentorship program

Opportunity Details:

  • This is a short-term opportunity; approximately six to eight hours per week over a nine to 12-month period. Funding is available for salaries and other project-related costs.

Trauma-informed Care Statement: ORI understands that participating in this research project may result in discussing difficult topics or may resurface memories of traumatic events. We are committed to providing the necessary accommodations and can direct participants to Humber College support resources.

For further information, please contact Shenique Turner, Project Manager, Office of Research and Innovation, at shenique.turner@humber.ca.

EOIs are due on May 1, 2023.
