November 27 was a night to remember for the Humber community as colleges across Ontario gathered for the 2023 Premier's Awards.

Out of 117 nominees in seven categories, two Humber alumni were announced winners - Carrie Baker (Business) and Michael Sanderson (Health Sciences).

Carrie is a Public Relations graduate and the President of Canada Goose, overseeing the company's commercial business and brand and driving its global growth. She played a pivotal role in establishing Canada Goose’s communications strategy, helping to lead its IPO in 2017 and creating its industry-leading Sustainable Impact Strategy. In 2019, Carrie was named WXN Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada and one of Canada’s 50 Best Executives by The Globe and Mail in 2020.

Michael Sanderson is a graduate of Humber’s Ambulance and Emergency Care program and the Chief and Director of Hamilton Paramedic Service, overseeing 440 staff and ensuring a high level of clinical, operational, and financial performance. Over a 50-year career in Emergency Medical Services, Michael has been a paramedic, educator, and leader at local, provincial, national, and international levels. While Executive Director at BC Ambulance, he led all EMS activities for the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, and he currently serves as president of the Ontario Association of Paramedic Chiefs (OAPC).

Humber's nominees in other categories included Kenneth Fowler (Apprenticeship), Deepa Mattoo (Community Services), Matthew Burnett (Creative Arts and Design), Anna Simone (Technology), and Lisa Post (Recent Graduate).

We are proud of all of our nominees who stand as leaders and difference-makers in their respective industries and continue to make a significant impact in their communities.

Humber has now had a winner at the Premier's Awards for seven consecutive years and 12 winners since 2011.

Dear Humber employees,

As we approach the holidays, I want to personally express my gratitude to every member of the Humber community. Your dedication and contributions are invaluable.

Your ongoing hard work and commitment to our students are truly inspiring, and it has played a significant role in Humber’s success this past year. Notable highlights include the Barrett Family Foundation's historic gift, the Schulich Builders: Scholarships for Skilled Trades announcement with the Premier, Schulich family and presidents from nine other colleges, the launch of Project SWITCH that will put us on course for a more sustainable future, and the many awards and recognitions given to students and employees. Well done, Humber!

To recognize your dedication and show our appreciation, the College will officially close for our annual holiday break at the end of the business day on Thursday, December 21, 2023.

  • Employee Appreciation Day: Friday, December 22, 2023
  • Holiday College Closure Dates: Saturday, December 23, 2023 to Tuesday, January 2, 2024

Humber College will reopen on Wednesday, January 3, 2024.

There will be business operations and pay considerations related to this closure and People(s) and Culture will provide details on how to handle employee scheduling and time entries related to this closure to all managers. Employees can access key payroll calendar dates on this webpage

While many will be away from Humber during this time, it’s important to recognize that there will still be a staff presence on campus. For those employees working during the holiday period, thank you for your dedication to the Humber community.

Once again, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering dedication to student success. As we approach the holiday season, I extend my warmest wishes for a joyful and restful time with your loved ones. Your commitment is truly appreciated, and I eagerly look forward to welcoming you back in the new year.

With the support of the Executive Team, ITS will be requiring additional approvals for end of fiscal purchases of service assets (laptops, iPads, etc.).

When proposing purchases for this fiscal year, please consider:

  • What is absolutely needed and cannot be deferred/purchased next year.
  • If it is the best decision for Humber, it’s students, faculty, and staff.
  • Where does it fit into the priorities of Humber.
  • What is the impact of not proceeding.

Large orders will require the responses to the considerations above as well as approval from your VP.

To ensure that approved orders can be captured for this fiscal, please have your orders placed by Friday, December 8, 2023.

Reminder: For service asset purchases to be captured in the current fiscal year’s budget they must be fully received before March 31, 2024.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact Eva Ponce, Associate Director Technology & Support.

Jennie Miron (Faculty of Health Sciences & Wellness) and Mark Karam (Faculty of Media & Creative Arts) are completing a REB-approved research project titled the Artificial Intelligence Applications Acceptance Pilot Study (REB-0324). We adapted an existing survey tool with four subscales to learn more about what influences teachers to adopt genAI in their teaching practices. Our initial pilot reported three of the four subscales to be valid and reliable. To that end, after further consultation with experts, we have revised and would like to re-test one subscale to establish its reliability and validity. Once the tool has been established to be reliable and valid we hope to complete a larger study in 2024.

We ask that full-time, part-time, and sessional teachers at Humber complete this short survey. It is estimated that it will take you about 10 minutes to complete and there is a detailed explanation of the request included in the introduction. Your participation is confidential and voluntary.

Complete the survey

If you have any questions about this request please feel free to contact Jennie Miron, Principal Investigator at jennie.miron@humber.ca.
