Happy Holidays, Humber!

As your teams plan for winter startup, we are here to give you a gentle reminder to submit any updated information from your area to the Campus Compass app.

This includes hours of operation, contact information, pictures, services currently being offered and whether your area has undergone any change in location on campus (room numbers, campus website etc.).

Having the most up to date information is vital for getting around the campus, especially for new students, staff, and faculty.

Submit your placemark content updates

For new users, download the app from the Google Play Store or from the Apple App Store today.

Accessible Learning Services shares some best practices considerations:

  • Most industries are currently challenged with labour shortages (CBC News, 2022).

  • Even with this shortage, employment barriers remain high for Canadians with autism.

  • In 2017, the Public Health Agency of Canada found 33% of Canadian adults with autism reported being employed compared to 79% of adults without a disability.

  • Ernst and Young launched a neurodiversity recruiting program in 2020. Since then, they have added 45 neurodiverse employees with a 98% retention rate.

  • Deloitte Canada and Ernst & Young have modified the interview process to focus on competence rather than on how a candidate might behave in a certain scenario. The typical job interview process may eliminate highly qualified candidates with autism.

The Accessible Learning Services (ALS) Centre will be undergoing an upgrade of its online Accessibility Services Portal from December 19 to December 23. This upgrade will improve user convenience for faculty and students and offer more self-service options within the accommodation process.

Important note: During the upgrade, the viewing and processing of accommodation letters will not be available. During the upgrade, ALS staff will not have access to the portal and will not be able to address portal-related questions or requests made via the portal.

To ensure students have access to their accommodation letters during the upgrade, faculty and students will need to download and retain copies of accommodation letters by Friday, December 16, 2022.

Exceptions:

The accommodations process for University of Guelph-Humber students will not change. Requests for new/renewal of accommodation letters will not be processed during the upgrade (December 19 to 23). ALS staff will not be available for support after December 22 due to the college closure (December 23, 2022 to January 3, 2023).

Additionally, students with Medical Response Plans and those registered within the Destiny One system will not appear in the portal. Accommodation letters will continue to be emailed to the students.

Alumna Deepa Mattoo

Fundraising and Volunteer Management alumna Deepa Mattoo has an inspiring story. Like many within the Humber community, she was an international student, coming to Canada to further her education and acclimate herself to the workforce.

Deepa has leveraged her academic experiences locally and abroad to become the Executive Director at the Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic in Toronto. Along with her broad and diverse professional portfolio, she's an educator for students from Osgoode Hall Law School and the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law.

An influential leader and changemaker, she passes her knowledge and wisdom rooted in social justice to individuals following in her footsteps. The recognition she's received for her work includes YWCA Women of Distinction, a Law Society Medal and an Ontario Volunteer Service Award.

Each December, the Faculty of Health Sciences & Wellness donates to Ernestine's Women's Shelter; a non-profit organization that provides advocacy, crisis intervention and shelter to women and gender diverse individuals and their children experiencing violence.

We are supporting this important community partner through monetary donations again this year, and have set-up a Canada Helps page with a goal of raising $2,000.

We would like to extend the invitation to the entire Humber College community. The holiday season can bring with it added stress and anxiety for survivors of gender-based violence, and your donations will help ensure that Ernestine's can continue to provide support to all the women and children in the shelter and out in the community.

If you have the means, please take a moment to contribute what you can (tax receipts are provided). Every donation helps!

Please visit our Canada Helps Page before December 23, 2022 to donate.

Thank you in advance.
