Do you consider yourself a strong ally of the 2SLGBTQ+ community here at Humber? Humber's 2SLGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group would like to connect with you.

The 2SLGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group (ERG) is inviting strong allies to join our mailing list. The ERG helps advance a culture at Humber that is accepting and inclusive for all 2SLGBTQ+ staff, faculty and students through outreach, community development, events, and consultation. In our mailing list, we'll invite you to 2SLGBTQ+ themed talks, panels and activities that everyone can attend.

Allyship is about showing up when the 2SLGBTQ+ community needs your support. By coming to the events that the ERG is holding, you are showing that you support the work that your 2SLGBTQ+ colleagues do. We often hear that some staff or faculty would have attended a particular event if they had known about it. By being on our mailing list, you'll ensure that you'll never miss out on any of our upcoming events. As well, we'll keep you updated on commemorations and news that are affecting your 2SLGBTQ+ Humber colleagues.

If at any time you would no longer like to receive our emails, you can be removed from the mailing list. We understand - we all get a lot of emails.

Any Humber employees who consider themselves a strong 2SLGBTQ+ ally and are interested in joining this mailing list can indicate their interest by filling out a short Microsoft form.

If you have any questions or concerns about this mailing list, please email the co-leads, matthew.harris@humber.ca or yanni.thepanya@humber.ca.

Food Strategy

In December 2023, Humber College launched its Food Strategy as part of its overall Well-being Strategy

The Food Strategy informs the approach to food across our campuses through six guiding principles. The Strategy and Vision will also help guide on-campus food offerings going forward and is part of Humber’s commitment to fostering healthy and inclusive environments that support learning and develop a sense of belonging.

Through this food strategy, Humber and the University of Guelph-Humber commit to prioritizing and promoting the positive impacts that food can have on our community.

Healthy YOU

The Healthy YOU website is an online healthy community hub that is a central site for well-being resources for students and employees.

The Hub is a one-stop place for Humber and Guelph-Humber students and employees to find the information they need about health and well-being and healthy initiatives and events happening across the campuses.

Use the hashtag #MyHealthyHumber to join the Humber community on our shared health and well-being journey.

Extensions on assignments are one of the most common disability and non-disability related accommodation requests. For learners with disabilities, extensions provide flexibility to manage their condition and academics.

Below are three vignettes that demonstrate why flexibility with assignments are needed.

  • The learner has a chronic medical condition and an assignment due in a few days. They have started the assignment and feel they will be able to submit it on time. The learner experiences an unpredictable flareup of their condition aggravated by personal stressors. They are having difficulty working on the assignment for extended periods of time. The learner needs to spend time to manage the flare up and contacts their professor to request an extension.

  • The learner has a condition impacting processing speed and written expression. As a result, each assignment takes twice as long to complete. They have two assignments due on the same day. They rely heavily on campus support such as the Writing Centre and Tutoring. While working on one assignment, the learner gets stuck and reaches out for support. They contact their faculty, visit the Writing Centre and book a tutoring appointment. This has taken additional time, but they are now back on track and have submitted the assignment on time. However, they are behind completing the other assignment due on the same day. An extension for this assignment is requested.

  • The learner is experiencing housing insecurity. They are feeling overwhelmed and are struggling with sleep. This is impacting concentration, memory and executive functioning. The lack of sleep and precarious housing makes it difficult for the learner to manage their mental health symptoms. It is difficult to keep on track with time management with such disrupted sleep. They realize they have an assignment due tomorrow and need extra time.

Visit our ALS Information for Faculty website to learn more about accommodating students with disabilities.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.

Orientation will comprise of virtual pre-arrival events, online guides and resources, program-focused Meet Your Faculty sessions, and on-campus events and activities.

Outline for Summer 2024 Orientation

March 22 - April 18: The Orientation Team will be offering pre-arrival orientation programming, such as “Meet Your O-Team" sessions. Pre-arrival orientation programming is designed to provide students with an opportunity to have all their orientation questions answered and connect with the Orientation Team and their peers before they come on campus.

April 22: Meet Your Belonging & Inclusion and Student Life Team, virtual Q&A for incoming Summer 2024 students. This will provide students with an opportunity to meet staff from the Equity Hubs (Black Student Support and Engagement – BSSE, LGBTQ+ Resource Centre, and the Spirituality and Wellness Centre) and Student Life departments, to learn about their services and how they can become involved.

May 1: The International Graduate School (IGS) campus will be hosting their semesterly First Look @ IGS Sessions, in-person and on campus for incoming IGS students only.

May 1 - 3: In partnership with our academic faculties, we will host Academic Orientation with our Meet Your Faculty sessions. These sessions will be a mix of virtual and in-person, on-campus. We will be reaching out directly to academic faculties with further information in the coming days.

May 6 - 10: Orientation will be hosting Welcome Stations on campus each day to further support the needs of our students.

May 6 - 31: Orientation, with the support of our campus partners, will host Welcome Events for students. This programming will focus on well-being and social connection, and we will continue to promote services and resources available to students throughout their time at Humber. We will reach out to campus partners with further information on how to get involved.

We welcome feedback from all our partners and appreciate the continued support from the college community.

If you have not previously been involved with Orientation but would like to partner with us in welcoming students in Summer 2024, please reach out to michelle.cho@humber.ca.

Centred around the theme of ‘connection’ Humber Let’s Talk brought us a week filled with inspiration and meaningful conversations to raise Mental Health awareness and action. This inaugural event, inspired by Bell Let's Talk, left a lasting impact on all who participated. The week began with a dynamic kick-off event, featuring speed-friending, a fun photobooth, and the captivating photovoice project.

A key component of the event was the speaker series, headlined by Michelle Chubb, an Indigenous influencer better known as @indigenous_baddie, who joined us on campus to share empowering insights around her mental health journey. The Connection Fair brought together hundreds of people from our Humber community to engage in different opportunities to connect.

The week ended on an inspiring note after hearing from student panelists who shared their experiences in navigating the complexities of student life. It was an impactful week bringing over 600 folks together across all events, and we extend a heartfelt thank you to all who contributed and supported Humber Let’s Talk!

Let’s continue the conversation all year long! #LetsTalkConnection
