To the Humber Community,

I am pleased to report that the Humber Board of Governors recently approved the proposed 2023-2024 budget and business plan.

This past fiscal year, the college’s budget and business plan were focused on post-pandemic recovery and supporting evolution of a more flexible and hybrid working and learning environment at Humber. Now, with the completed return to in-person activities, we are able to focus on creating the best possible experiences for our students online and on campus.

Planning for 2023-2024

Many of the initiatives in the 2023-2024 Business Plan stem from the Academic and Digital Campus Plans and reflect our promise to create an exceptional student experience.

The Business Plan goals focus on two major areas:

  • Teaching and Learning Excellence
    • Providing students with cutting-edge knowledge through innovation teaching and learning techniques
    • Offering expanded program offerings and services
    • Providing flexible learning through a wide array of credentials and pathways as well as work-integrated learning experience to succeed in an evolving workplace.
  • Exceptional Student Experience
    • Building the organizational culture and infrastructure that nourishes student success and learners’ ability to thrive, through the offering of accessible, inclusive, heathy, sustainable and technologically advanced campuses and online learning environments
    • Embedding equity, diversity, inclusion as well as Indigenous ways of being and doing into all approaches.

Planning Context for the 2023-2024 Budget

Since 2020, Humber has continued to experience impacts on operations and academic delivery due to changing learner preferences, economic and labour market conditions and the effects of COVID-19. For fiscal year 2023-24, the College anticipates that overall enrolment will increase and surpass pre-pandemic levels. This is largely due to growth in international students, while continued pressure is felt system-wide in the domestic market as a result of a strong labour market and demographic trends.

The new budget supports the College’s goals and objectives and clearly demonstrates that Humber remains financially sound and committed to the principles of fiscal management and sustainability. We continue to invest in major capital projects including the construction of the Humber Cultural Hub and the expansion of the Centre for Skilled Trades and Technology.

The full Business Plan for 2023-2024 is now posted and I encourage everyone in the Humber community to read and discuss them with their teams.

This is the first Business Plan and Budget of my tenure at Humber, and I believe they lay out exciting and ambitious initiatives that will continue to strengthen our global, polytechnic leadership.

Envisioning our Future

This year marks the end of the 2018-2023 Strategic Plan and the start of a new chapter at Humber. In the coming year, we will be engaging the Humber community and our partners to create our 2030 vision for transformative and socially engaged post-secondary education. We will have more to share about the Humber Inspired process in the coming weeks, including how you can contribute to the discussion.

I know whether we’re talking about today or ten years from now, we will continue to be focused on providing learners with high-quality programs and work-integrated learning that sets them up for success today and tomorrow. We will offer outstanding and innovative programs and services and foster an equitable, inclusive, healthy and sustainable college.

Every day, I am impressed by the commitment and dedication that each of you demonstrates in your work, in supporting our learners and each other. With a new roadmap in hand for the coming fiscal year and a focus on co-creating the vision for the future of polytechnic education at Humber and in Canada, I know that we will continue to achieve great things together.

Thank you for all that you do.

Humber’s Food Strategy is being developed to chart a path forward for our community on all things related to food – and we want to hear from you!

This survey will gather important community feedback on how food connects to belonging, health and well-being, nutrition, sustainability, affordability, and food security. It will also ask how you engage with food on campus, to better meet service needs.

To ensure maximum input from our community the survey is now open until Tuesday, April 11.

Open to all faculty, staff, and students. Prizes include ten $50 gift cards to the Humber Bookstore, ten $50 Dine on Campus gift cards for food on campus, and eight grand prizes of $500 tuition credit on your student account (only Humber and Guelph-Humber students are eligible for the grand prize).

Prizes will be drawn on April 12, 2023, and winners will be contacted individually.

Please complete the survey in its entirety, a process which should take no more than eight minutes.

To all faculty and academic partners,

During Fall 2022 finals, both accommodated and non-accommodated learners were invited to take their exams at the Test Centre, and it was determined that there was enough capacity to accommodate all these learners, with additional space available. As a result, moving into Winter 2023 finals, we will continue to allow both accommodated and non-accommodated learners to take their exams at the Test Centre. All learners must continue to book their appointments using the Testing Services link on Blackboard.

Based on the analysis of data and feedback from Fall 2022, the following measures have also been adjusted this semester:

  • The exam window has been reduced from 14 days to seven days.
  • Instructors no longer need to submit their exams three days in advance; this lead time has been reduced to one business day.
  • In order to restrict which learners can use the Test Centre, instructors are encouraged to set "Release Conditions" on their Testing Services link on Blackboard. More information can be found in our handbook on pages 9-11.

Please note that the following measures continue to remain in place:

  • Learners still require advance notice when booking in order to ensure that the resources and equipment required for appointments are prepared and ready for the next business day. This lead time has been reduced from 48h down to 36h, and in urgent cases, learners are able to call or email the Test Centre if they would like to request an earlier write time.
  • The Test Centre team cannot enforce specific write times within the 7-day window. This window is in place to ensure availability and access to required resources (ex: private room, assistive software, no more than one test per day, etc.). Instructors are encouraged to discuss write time expectations with learners prior to them booking their appointment. However, depending on resource availability, learners may not be able to book this specific date/time. Instructors can check the "History" tab of their Test Submission page to view all booked appointments (handbook page 18).

Please connect with the Test Centre team via email at testingservices@humber.ca, or by phone at x4712 for North or x3228 for Lakeshore for any questions or any support needed with test submissions.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of all learners.
