We are pleased to announce that on February 12, 2024, new and redesigned Indigenous Teaching & Learning Bundles will become available to help advance Indigenous education at Humber.

Following the success of our earlier learning bundles, these new offerings are designed to equip faculty and staff with a theoretical focus as they work to incorporate Indigenous voices, perspectives, teachings, histories, and experiences into their classrooms. We encourage all faculty, professors, librarians, counsellors, and staff to take advantage of this unique training opportunity.

All Our Relations will be the first Teaching & Learning Bundle offered by Indigenous Education & Engagement. This introductory course focuses on Indigenous education, worldviews, historical and contemporary realities, anti-Indigenous racism, and decolonizing teaching and learning. Additional training bundles will become available later this year.

The course details are as follows:

  • Dates: February 12 to April 8, 2024.
  • Time commitment: Approximately 1.5 hours per week for eight weeks.
  • Professors (full-time, partial load and part-time), librarians, counsellors, and staff are all welcome to participate.
  • The course is offered in an asynchronous online format whereby learners meet weekly course requirements.

To enrol, please complete our online request form. Deadline to enrol is Friday, February 2, 2024.

For all other inquiries, please contact danielle.jeancart@humber.ca.

Thank you for your continued support in advancing Indigenous education at Humber College.

Sincerely,

This is a gentle reminder for all individuals responsible for budget management (budget holders) to diligently review their open purchase orders (POs) as the 2023/2024 fiscal year approaches year-end.

It is important to note that any POs that remain open and have a value of $100 or more will automatically be carried forward to the new fiscal year 2024/2025 on April 1, 2024. These carried forward POs will be reflected as encumbrances on the department/faculty 2024/2025 budget, therefore, please ensure to close them if they are no longer valid.

It is crucial for budget holders to be mindful that all invoices received after March 31, 2024 for the carried forward POs will be expensed against the new fiscal year's budget.

Additionally, all other types of POs, including standing orders for 2023/2024 fiscal year, will be closed.

If you have any open regular 'reverse' purchase orders or standing orders for the fiscal year 2023/2024 that need to be closed, kindly submit a request to Financial Services at purchasing@humber.ca.

Do you have a project in mind that could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions on campus? Colleges and Institutes Canada wants to help bring Humber's ideas of reaching net zero to life, through the Campus Living Labs Network. You could receive funding for your project idea that centres on providing awareness for greenhouse gas emissions reduction through one of the following themes: Indigenous knowledge and practices, food, waste, transportation, and buildings and land management.

A living lab project means integrating applied research and teaching with campus planning, infrastructure, operations, and/or community development in a way that enhances the impact of sustainability projects.

Humber’s Office of Sustainability wants to hear ideas from staff and faculty, so please share your ideas with us by emailing sustainability@humber.ca ahead of making an official submission.

Submissions are due to CICAN by February 15, so make sure to email the Office of Sustainability ahead of this date.

Learners with disabilities may encounter different barriers from the classroom to Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) environment. This requires the need to consider specific accommodations to address these barriers. As a result, the WIL ALS Accommodation Letters developed for placement look different than standard Accommodation Letters issued by Accessible Learning Services (ALS).

Here is some key information regarding WIL ALS Accommodation Letters:

  • Accessibility Consultants work with learners to determine if they experience functional limitations that may impact their ability to meet the required learning outcomes for WIL courses.

  • A standard ALS Accommodation Letter may indicate the following: "Placement accommodation planning may be required". A WIL Accommodation Letter will then be developed if appropriate, once more information can be obtained regarding placement requirements.

  • To determine the type of placement environment the student may be working in, Accessibility Consultants may reach out to the program for information in advance of determining what accommodations to recommend.

  • WIL Accommodation Letters are not available on the ALS Faculty Web Portal. In most cases, the letters will be sent from the Accessibility Consultant to the appropriate contact within the program.

  • One key difference between the letters is that learners sign the WIL Accommodation Letter to confirm the letter can be shared with the placement site.

  • Learners who have not previously registered with ALS may encounter disability-related barriers when they are doing a WIL course and require accommodations only for WIL courses.

  • Learners with a standard Accommodation Letter often do not need placement accommodations. If a learner requests placement accommodations, direct them to contact their Accessibility Consultant if they are already registered with ALS or our front desk to schedule an initial appointment if they are not.

Accessibility Consultants are available to facilitate presentations on WIL accommodations to faculty and staff.

Visit our Accessible Learning Services faculty site to learn more about accommodating students with disabilities.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.
