Starting January 23, 2023, a new offering of the Indigenous Teaching & Learning Bundles will begin. These bundles are microcredentials that provide a theoretical basis for faculty who are working to bring Indigenous voices, perspectives, teachings, histories, and experiences into the classroom.

The first bundle, All Our Relations, focuses on Indigenous education, worldviews, political realities, anti-racism, and cultural safety. Additional training bundles that focus on Indigenous treaties and legal rights, land-based pedagogy, activism, and a range of other topics from climate change to Indigenous science will be available in future.

This is not “click-through” training. We engage learners with presentations, in-depth readings, media content, and sharing circle discussions. Final assignments that assess and apply their knowledge are completed and assessed.

Here are further details about this training opportunity:

  • Dates: January 23 to April 7, 2023
  • Two-hours per week x 10-week commitment (runs over 11 weeks to allow for Reading Break)
  • Faculty will be SWF’d or paid for their time and must receive approval from their manager or associate dean to participate
  • Professors (full and partial load), librarians, counsellors, and administrative staff are all welcome to participate
  • The course is asynchronous and online, but learners are asked to keep up with course content on a weekly basis

To inquire or to enroll, please contact kerry.potts@humber.ca by December 16, 2022.

To all faculty and academic partners,

Test Centre Reminders

  1. For learners to be able to schedule their exam in the Test Centre, faculty must first submit a test through the Testing Services link in their course content in Blackboard or CourseLink. Learners will not be able to make an appointment without a test being available first.
  2. To learn how to submit a test on Blackboard or CourseLink, please watch this short instructional video.
  3. In Blackboard, please ensure that you have made the Testing Services link visible to students so that they can see it in their course content. You have two options for this step:
    • On the Testing Services link, click on “Hidden from students” and switch it to “Visible to students” – this allows all learners in your course to see the Testing Services Link and make an appointment in the Test Centre, or;
    • On the Testing Services link, click on “Hidden from students” and switch it to “Release conditions” – this will prompt you to select the specific learners in your course who can see the Testing Services Link and make an appointment in the Test Centre. A tutorial on release conditions can be found here.
  4. Once you have submitted your test and it has been approved, and you have made the link visible in Blackboard, you can let learners know that they are able to book their exam by clicking on the Testing Services link. Learners must book their appointment 48 hours ahead of time.
  5. We do not accept paper test drop offs. If only a paper copy of the exam is available, please scan it, and upload it with your test submission.
  6. Please connect with us via email at testingservices@humber.ca, or call us at x4712 for North or x3228 for Lakeshore if you need any support with your test submission.

Finals Fall 2022

This semester, both accommodated learners and non-accommodated learners are able to take their final exams in the Test Centre. Non-accommodated learners can book their appointments through the same Testing Services Link. We have extended our service hours to allow for a higher volume of students.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of all learners.

The Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE), Humber Press, Office of Research & Innovation (ORI), is pleased to announce that the JIPE Submissions Handbook has recently been updated to better reflect the needs of the research and innovation community at Humber and beyond. The highlight of the changes include the following:

  • Announcement about JIPE’s yearly general issue and special issues
  • Update to the JIPE submissions checklist
  • Resources for effective visual storytelling

JIPE is an online, open-access journal for peer-reviewed papers that mobilize knowledge and insights generated by the global polytechnic community. JIPE is electronically published by Humber Press at Humber College’s Office of Research & Innovation.

JIPE publishes original research papers, review articles, brief reports, book reviews and our “micro-dissemination” options: innovation spotlights and essays. JIPE welcomes research stories and manuscripts from seasoned and emerging researchers from across the polytechnic and community college sectors, both within and outside Canada. Students/research assistants are also encouraged to submit manuscripts under the supervision of a faculty member.

Submissions are accepted on an ongoing basis. Please visit jipe.ca to learn more. Questions may be directed to humberpress@humber.ca.

Accessible Learning Services shares some best practices considerations:

  • A requirement is essential when it can be illustrated that failure to demonstrate competency in a specific manner would prevent a student from meeting the learning outcome(s).

  • When considering the type of assessment(s) to be utilized for your course, ensure there is a rational connection between the assessment format and the knowledge being assessed.

  • Consider the diverse learning styles of students in your course when selecting assessment formats.

  • Identify a variety of formats that can achieve the same learning outcome. Then, allow students to select which assessment(s) to do.

  • Three important questions to assist in determining essential requirements can be found on the ALS website.

Visit our ALS Information for Faculty website to learn more about accommodating students with disabilities.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.
