Next up, we are putting the Sustainability Spotlight on Katie Evans and Harsimranjeet “Simran” Sandhu from Chartwells Canada at Humber College.  

Katie and Simran are Chartwells food service managers for Humber’s North and Lakeshore campuses. They are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the residence dining hall and Chartwells-run retail spaces.  

Sustainability is at the forefront of Katie and Simran’s daily business operations. They are responsible for managing sustainable operations at Chartwells food services, as well as ensuring their staff are equipped with the correct training. “Simran and I are glad to be a part of an organization that recognizes the importance of sustainability and empowers us to take action,” Katie said.  

Katies and Simran's teams lead the majority of O2GO Reusable Container program operations on campus. Due to their great work and the effectiveness of the program, there has been a 91 per cent approval rate among students using the program in residence.

The College Employer Council and Ontario Public Service Employees Union have reached an agreement to enter binding interest arbitration. The strike that was scheduled for 12:01 a.m. on March 18, 2022, is called off. This includes all work-to-rule strike activities. All Humber and University of Guelph-Humber classes and activities will continue as scheduled on Friday, March 18.

Advisor Training 2022 Banner - Call for Proposals Due April 8th

Advising & Career Services at Humber College is excited to announce this year's annual Advisor Training Conference. Our theme for 2022 is Leveraging this Moment for a Transformative Future taking place May 16 to 20. This year we are planning to have a hybrid event for staff and faculty to have opportunities to connect in person, virtually, or both! The goal of the Advisor Training Conference is to provide high-quality, relevant professional development in advising, student success, and student supports for our Humber College staff and faculty.

We encourage staff and faculty who are interested in presenting to submit a proposal by completing the Presentation Proposal Form. The deadline to submit a presentation proposal is April 8. Possible session types include:

  • 60 to 90-minute Informational, Instructional, and/or Interactive Session presenting on a concept tied to professional development for student advising.
  • 45-minute Wellness Session leading participants through a live wellness, self-care activity. 

Proposals will be reviewed by the Advising Training Committee and notification of proposal acceptance will be sent by April 19.

Please feel free to share this with your Humber College network and colleagues who may be interested in attending and presenting. We hope that you will submit a proposal to share your knowledge and experience with your colleagues and join us as we continue to advance in the field of advising and student success at Humber!

Dear students/employees,  

As communicated earlier this week, the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) has provided Ontario colleges with notice of its plans to commence a strike on March 18, 2022, beginning at 12:01 a.m. The strike would involve all full-time and partial-load professors, counsellors and librarians of the Ontario college system, including Humber full-time and partial-load faculty who teach at the University of Guelph-Humber (UofGH). We are hopeful that a resolution will be reached, and a strike prevented; however, plans are being made in the event of a strike.  

We know that each of you have endured unique circumstances since the onset of the pandemic, and we know that the pending work stoppage is an added stress. We will continue to support you as a member of the Humber community.  

More information about what you can expect during the potential strike.  

All Humber full-time classes will be suspended during the strike. Some Continuous Professional Learning (CPL) and some University of Guelph-Humber (UofGH) courses will continue to run. All Humber Education and Training Solutions programs will continue to run as scheduled. A list of programs that are/are not running will be posted on Friday.   

Students will not lose their semester if a strike occurs. While we are unable to predict how long the strike may last, please know that Humber and UofGH are committed to student success, and we will ensure that all students have the opportunity to achieve their learning goals and complete their semester in a timely manner. Specific details will depend on the number of academic days affected by the strike and will vary by program.  

We encourage students to remain enrolled in their classes. There will be time following the end of the strike for students to decide about withdrawing. Details regarding possible refunds will also be available at that time. 

There may be disruptions to student work placements and learners should expect to receive updates from their Faculties directly. Humber students may contact their placement coordinator if they have any questions. UofGH students may contact their field placement coordinator directly regarding the status of placement activity.   

Any student employee should contact their manager to determine the impact of the potential strike on their upcoming schedule and duties. We will work to ensure that students who are scheduled to work for the remainder of the Winter semester will have the opportunity to continue to work.   

We anticipate that all varsity athletic events, including the National Basketball championship scheduled for March 24-27, and Humber’s participation in selected off-site activities will continue during the strike.  

If a strike occurs, while full-time classes will not be in session, Humber campuses and Employment Ontario offices along with the University of Guelph-Humber will remain open during the strike. Expected strike-specific hours of operation are listed below. Student services will be available either in-person and/or virtually.  

We know you are studying amidst difficult circumstances and that the news about a potential strike may cause anxiety. We are committed to supporting the health and well-being of our students and recognize that navigating this uncertainty can be challenging. Humber offers many resources for students that can support personal health, well-being and resilience:  

We anticipate that there will be picket lines at the North and Lakeshore campus entrances. Anyone travelling to/from campus should expect delays and plan accordingly.   

We encourage students to use time during the strike to catch up on course work, readings and assignments, and review any material that you may have found challenging. Services such as Peer Tutoring, Math and Writing Centres and other academic supports will be available during and after the strike.

  • International Graduate School, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.   
  • University of Guelph-Humber, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE) is an online, open-access journal for peer-reviewed papers that mobilize knowledge and insights generated by the global polytechnic community. JIPE is electronically published by Humber Press at Humber’s Office of Research & Innovation.

JIPE encourages scholarly work exploring the impact of innovative teaching and learning practices that push the boundaries of traditional approaches to learning or educational delivery.

Looking for a place to publish your work? JIPE publishes original empirical research papers, review articles, brief reports, essays, book reviews and our 'micro-dissemination' option: Innovation Spotlights. The journal welcomes submissions from scholars across the polytechnic and community college sectors, both within and outside Canada.

Papers are accepted on an ongoing basis. There are also currently two calls for papers for special Issues of the journal, on "Beyond Sustainability: Regenerative Design" and "Indigenous Education & Research in a Polytechnic Context." Please find more details on jipe.ca.

Following the Ontario government’s decision to end most COVID-19 measures and lift mask mandates for most indoor settings, Humber’s vaccination policy and masking mandate are scheduled to be lifted beginning May 2.   

There may continue to be situations in which masking and other personal protective equipment (PPE) is required. If your learning or working environment fits these criteria, masks or other PPE will be provided to you by your faculty or department.  

Humber will continue to support any employees or students who wish to continue wearing masks.  

In the summer term, there will no longer be active screening points at campus entryways. However, everyone coming to campus should continue to self-monitor for any symptoms and stay home if they are ill. The self-screening section of the Humber Guardian app will remain active, and the Humber community is encouraged to continue to use it to self-screen before coming to campus.  

Proper hand hygiene and respiratory/cough etiquette remain important and enhanced cleaning including frequent cleaning of high-touch services will continue.  

We know that the past two years have been challenging and that new information and changing public health directives can be stressful.  

As we move into this next phase, members of the Humber community may have different levels of comfort with the changes occurring in the province and on campus. As always, please continue to treat each other with respect.  

Humber will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation in the province and provide any updates on campus operations as needed. 

The vaccination policy and masking mandate remain in place for the rest of the winter term.
