Using Eventbrite for paid ticketed events has become an increasingly popular way for us to host and attend in-person and virtual functions. Financial Services would like to remind staff that there is specific procedure related to the creation of paid events using Eventbrite. We have noticed some departments are setting up their own accounts, however, the event must be set up under Humber College’s account which is linked directly to the college.

Please remember that all paid events set up using Eventbrite must be coordinated through the Financial Services Department.

Attached is the Eventbrite information page with all the relevant details to help you successfully set up your next paid ticketed event at Humber.

Humber’s new Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) website has recently launched! 

For years, we’ve known that WIL is a key reason why students choose to study at Humber. This new website will showcase all of the great WIL opportunities for students at Humber; from applied research to service learning and everything in between. 

This website will primarily highlight recent WIL success stories across Humber’s departments and Faculties. New stories will be regularly featured on the Success Stories webpage. To ensure this page is consistently updated with the latest stories, students, faculty, staff and community/industry partners are encouraged to submit WIL success story leads by completing this Microsoft E-form. Once the form is submitted, the Government Relations, Marketing and Communications department will be in touch with you shortly to determine next steps. 

The website will also become a centralized location for general Humber WIL information related to the Quality Assurance Framework project, WIL definitions, and more. Faculty WIL websites will continue to be the primary source for Faculty-specific WIL information. 

The Student Success and Engagement department will also be creating interactive digital content for the website in the near future. Stay tuned for a social media campaign related to WIL in the upcoming months. 

This initiative is part of Humber’s ongoing work related to the 2018-2023 Humber Strategic Plan. Work-Integrated Learning is under Strategic Pillar 1: Career-Ready Citizens: Strategic Priority 1. Transform education by creating opportunities for all students to participate in meaningful experiential learning, with a focus on work-integrated learning and applied research.

Abstract

The importance of complete mental health in school context has recently begun to attract a lot of attention. Positive psychology interventions are often associated with improvement in mental health outcomes, but few studies have examined whether story reading is an intervention that is linked with indicators of complete mental health. This study investigated the effects of story reading interventions on both positive and negative indicators of mental health over time for a group of Turkish grade 10 high school students (n = 53). These included 33 students in a story reading group and 20 in a control group for comparison. The results showed that story reading led to improvement in students’ mindfulness, optimism, happiness, and positive emotions, and also caused reduction in depression, anxiety, pessimism, and other negative emotions over a five-week period, with a small to large effect sizes. The obtained results are discussed in the context of their implications for potential psychological interventions in high school settings.

“Skill Challenge Mechatronics” is a four day event which took place from November 22 to 25, of which two days are an intensive (virtual) competition starting at 6 a.m. EST. There were 24 teams competing from 18 different countries. Marko Gunja and Nickolas de Boer of Humber College represented Team Canada.

We are extremely proud to inform our Humber community they placed 4th overall! It is a long journey to get there with endless hours of practice, intense focus and commitment. We want to acknowledge Skills Coach, Mateusz Cwalinski, a former WorldSkills competitor and current Humber student, for his coaching and leadership. As a special acknowledgement, Chief Expert Michael Linn from Festo Didactic called Team Canada “Innovative” for their ability to demonstrate how the simulated equipment was interacting with the physical Human Machine Interface. A big thanks to Festo Didactic, a member of Humber’s Advanced Manufacturing Skills Consortium, for their support.

In this event, competitors competed virtually on two levels:

Level 1: Troubleshoot an automated system in a simulation program (FluidSIM) which consisted of problem solving the electrical and pneumatic diagrams while also adjusting conditions such as force, flow, pressure, and power for proper operations. Then answer knowledge based questions related to the system.

Level 2: Program a logical sequence in a virtual station in a simulation software (CIROS) with a physical PLC and HMI. Then answer knowledge based questions related to physical properties of an MPS station and industrial robots (in a virtual setting).

The competition focused on Work Integration & Management, Team work, Systems Integration, Developing Mechatronics Systems, Networking, Digital twin, Programming, Problem Solving, Maintenance and Simulation in a virtual environment.

Let’s give a big congratulations to the team as they continue to train for the 46th WorldSkills Competition- October 2022- in Shanghai, China.

The Humber Student Success Survey (HSSS) is vital to furthering Humber’s understanding of students’ needs and to supporting student success. For example, we know that while most students successfully complete the first year of their program, one in four leave the college. HSSS is one means of identifying students at risk of attrition and enables us to initiate timely interventions.  

With your support, we achieved a  40% response rate to the survey between November 1 and November 15. This is a major success!

Humber has identified its Strategic Priority #7 under Pillar #3, Healthy and Inclusive Community. We strive to build a diverse and inclusive community of exceptional students, faculty, and staff. This specific supporting action is to establish and implement an institutional framework and strategy for equity, diversity and inclusion that addresses the needs of both students and employees.

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) bring together employees who share a common identity, characteristic and set of interests. They create a culture of inclusion that enhances employee engagement and further supports organizations' vision and values (Source: Catalyst). The Black/African ERG was launched in September 2020 and is one of two ERGs that Humber and the University of Guelph-Humber currently offer for all eligible staff and faculty.

On November 29, 2021, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., there will be an Employment Systems Review (ESR) focus group meeting, and the consultants will ask about the following:

  • The organizational culture at Humber and how the human resources employment policies and procedures can be enhanced.
  • The ESR will seek your suggestions on possible changes to advance EDI at the College.
  • Information provided to the consultants will be prepared in aggregate form.
