The Humber Archives serves not only to preserve the history of Humber College, but to put it on display! We invite you to visit us on the 4th floor of the LRC, where you can explore five display cases full of archival material. The displays will change on an ongoing basis, but current displays include a/v material, buttons, and the beginning of the campus in 1967.

As we are entering into the holiday season, the Archives have just mounted a new display looking back at the holiday season at Humber in 1971. The display features articles from an issue of the student newspaper, "Coven" featuring very 1970s holiday images and snowy stories.

We encourage all of you, as find yourself back on campus, to check out these ever changing exhibits (Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. the current displays run until the end of December). To learn more, please connect with us at archives@humber.ca

Purchasing Services would like to remind staff to review the Purchasing Procedures on the proper process to dispose of surplus or obsolete equipment. The process ensures that assets are tracked properly, conflicts of interests are avoided, and we follow the principles of sustainability and value for money.

In summary:

  1. Departments/Faculties must communicate the surplus or obsolete items to other budget holders so they have an opportunity to utilize the item(s) prior to disposal or sale.
  2. Disposal of deemed surplus or obsolete items lies with Facilities Management and Purchasing Services in conjunction with the Vice President, Administration and CFO or designate.
  3. Selling of surplus or obsolete equipment must be done by public auction, tender, or quotation.
  4. All attempts must be made to avoid sending items to landfill sites.
  5. Any costs recovered from the sale of surplus or obsolete equipment will be returned to the college’s central account.
  6. Once the disposal is complete, provide details of the asset(s) (Description, Make, Model, Serial/VIN #, Asset Tag #) and a copy of the sale invoice or documentation to financial.reporting@humber.ca.

Please contact purchasing@humber.ca if you have any questions or require assistance.

Did you know...

Intent or motive to discriminate is not a necessary element in proving discrimination. Instead, the primary focus is on whether a person's actions or behaviour had a negative or discriminatory effect on the person who experienced the behaviour (Human Rights Legal Support Centre).

Many people wrongly think that discrimination does not exist if the impact was not intended or if other factors could explain a particular situation. Discrimination often takes place without any intent to do harm. The Ontario Human Rights Commission establishes that the lack of intention to discriminate is no defence to an allegation of discrimination. The focus is placed on the impact (the effect) of the questionable behaviour. Intent or motive to discriminate is not a necessary element for a finding of discrimination.

Familiarize yourself with Humber's Human Rights Policy and Complaints Resolution Procedures.

Thank you for your continued commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion at Humber.

On Thursday, December 2nd, flags at our campuses will be lowered to half-mast in memory of Bryana Auclair. Bryana was in the General Arts and Science – University Transfer diploma program in the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Sciences and Innovative Learning. She passed away on November 16th.

The Humber community is deeply saddened by Bryana’s sudden and untimely death. The College has been in contact with Bryana’s family to express our condolences, and is providing support to faculty, staff and students who knew her. It is clear from conversations with family, peers, and faculty, that Bryana’s enthusiasm and care was evident in all her work and relationships.

Counselling support and Employee Assistance Program (EAP) services are available to students and employees. Students should contact counselling@humber.ca or 416.675.6622 x3331 at Lakeshore and x5090 at North. The postsecondary student helpline Good2talk.ca is also available 24/7 at 1.866.925.5454. We are proud to be the Co-Chairs of this year’s Humber Gives Campaign once again – a campaign where faculty and staff give back with a donation to support Humber students.

We are also excited to share that today is Giving Tuesday – a day that marks the world’s largest generosity movement. It is a day when many people give back and make a donation to their favourite causes to continue to make a difference in our world.

We ask that you please consider making your Giving Tuesday donation to Humber to support deserving students through scholarships and bursaries. We are also happy to share that your Giving Tuesday donation will be doubled, which means your support will go twice as far. As you know, the past year and a half has been extremely challenging, particularly for students, and your support today can be life changing for them.

You should have also received an email from Ian Crookshank earlier today to share more with you about this special day. If you have already made a donation, thank you! If you have yet to make your donation, please see the links below:

Thank you so much for all that you do each and every day and for all of your support.

Happy Giving Tuesday!

During the past year, the Capital Development & Facilities Management (CDFM) team has continued retrofitting, refurbishing and re-visioning campus properties for enhanced end-user experience while increasing user comfort through innovative and sustainable energy efficiency methodologies.

Our retrofitting projects include the award winning NX Building where the original aluminum curtain walls and spandrel panels, as well as a glass vestibule were replaced to achieve the thermal energy performance requirements of CaGBC’s new Zero Carbon Building Standard.

Refurbishing projects include the Faculty of Business offices and open lab H205, designed to “bring the outdoors In” by creating soothing and calming areas for the students with sky, plant, glacier and earth inspired curves, colors, textures and spacing.

Similar to the award winning North Campus Barrett CTI, our new capital project development at the Lakeshore campus, the Humber Cultural Hub (HCH) is being designed to revitalize culture, creativity and community while achieving LEED Platinum certification, Net Zero Carbon targets, the lowest energy consumption of any building on either campus and the Toronto Green Standard.

Please visit us at https://humber.ca/facilities or view a presentation we’ve prepared for you to see both recently completed and current ongoing projects. We hope the flythrough’ s included help create an in-person perspective of some of these exceptional and refreshed spaces.
