An AED stands for Automated External Defibrillator. These portable and battery-operated devices can save a life for someone who is in cardiac arrest, but every minute counts.
Nowadays you can find them in shopping malls, airports, government buildings and community centres. Humber College has about 85 devices throughout all its sites: 53 at North Campus, 24 at Lakeshore campus, plus additional units in all five Community Employment Service locations and three at the new International Graduate School.
In a cardiac emergency, every minute before using an AED could mean the difference between life or death. AEDs can be used by anyone. By following AEDs audio/visual prompts, it makes it easy and safe to use so that lives can be saved. These AEDs are most effective when used by trained individuals. Those with Standard First Aid/CPR training have also been trained on using an AED. The AED unit checks a victim’s heart rhythm and delivers an electric shock only if it determines that defibrillation is required to restore the heart’s normal rhythm.
By having AEDs highly visible and readily available at all sites, it allows the College to be better equipped in the event there is a cardiac emergency. At your next staff meeting, why not review where the closest AED is to your workspace, and who is trained on how to use it? You can even use the Campus Compass app to find the closest AED by clicking on "Explore maps & floors".

It is with true mixed emotions that I inform the Humber community that Keith Pua, Public Safety Coordinator at the Lakehsore Campus and IGS has accepted a new position at Trent University as Campus Security Manager. Keith has been at Humber for 14 years, with the first three years as a contracted security guard and supervisor. His talents were recognized and he was hired as the first Public Safety Coordinator for the Lakeshore Campus in 2011.
Over the last 11 years, Keith has been an instrumental member of our team. Keith was the initiator of the Humber Guardian App and when the pandemic hit, he was instrumental in working with the app provider to bring the proof of vaccination and daily self-screening functions to fruition. Keith was also instumental in setting up and configuring our electronic security incident reporting system. Keith has helped lead the way for Public Safety at the Lakeshore Campus and most recently also took on coordinating our requirements at the International Graduate School.
Keith will be sadly missed, but sometimes you have to let the good ones go, so that they can continue to flourish and reach their true potential. We in Public Safety are incredibly proud of Keith and all his accomplishments and know that he will make a difference at Trent University. They are lucky to have him.
Keith's last day at Humber will be April 8, 2022. Please feel free to connect directly with him to wish him well on his new adventure.
Thank you Keith for all you have done for Humber College.
Sincerely,
Rob Kilfoyle, CPP, CMM III
Director, Public Safety and Emergency Management
It is with mixed emotions that I share that Sarah Peake has accepted an exciting new role as Executive Director Integration and Transformation at George Brown College. Her last day at Humber will be April 8.
During her time at Humber, Sarah has made a significant contribution in a number of key areas, most recently as the Associate Dean Flexible Learning in the Centre for Innovative Learning.
Over the past nine years, through her strong strategic and systems thinking skills and collaborative approach, Sarah has contributed significantly to numerous initiatives at Humber, both in the Office of the Registrar and Centre for Innovative Learning. Most notably, Sarah led the development and implementation of a process for Humber’s micro-credentials strategy. As a past co-chair of the Marketing and Recruitment Committee, she led an audit of Humber's print publications and supported Humber's website review and subsequent recommendations. Also of note, Sarah recently provided co-sponsorship to the Flexible Registration Project to modernize cross-college professional learning policies and processes and implement a flexible personalized registration system for non-credential learners (Destiny One). This was a significant step in supporting and implementing the Continuous Professional Learning strategy. In her role as Associate Dean Flexible Learning, Sarah provided leadership in the development of Humber’s Collaborative Framework to deliver flexible learning opportunities to credential and non-credential learners. She also worked on the implementation of Banner and CRM Dynamics for Admissions and the transformation of Admission processes.
Although Sarah will be missed by the Centre for Innovative Learning and the broader Humber community, we wish her much success in this next stage of her professional journey.

Associate Vice-President, Teaching and Learning
