An assembly of faculty, support staff, students, and administrators, Humber Polytechnic Council (HPC) is Humber’s collective employee voice, making suggestions to Humber Polytechnic’s President as it relates to long and short‐term institutional priorities.

At its fifth meeting of the academic year, Humber Polytechnic Council (HPC) welcomed presentations on Revenue Generation and the Humber Learning Outcomes.

REVENUE GENERATION

Dr. Gina Antonacci, Senior Vice-President, Academic & Dr. Derek Stockley, Associate Vice-President, Academic

To generate revenue generation and efficiency ideas that could contribute to supporting Humber as it navigates the current fiscal climate, a discussion was held with HPC. The discussion was one of several discussions being held and spearheaded by the Academic division across the institution.

STUDENT EMPLOYABILITY: HUMBER LEARNING OUTCOMES E-MODULES

Vera Beletzan, Associate Vice-President, Teaching and Learning, Jennifer Larson, Director, Strategic Initiatives, and Diane Simpson, Principal, Humber Downtown

This very special day happens annually on March 21 (symbolic of Trisomy 21), and is celebrated in 190 countries.

Today, we choose to learn about and uplift the Down syndrome community, and give recognition to the incredible accomplishments of people born with this condition, including Humber alumna Jessica Rotolo.

It is a time to come together and show support for one another, to combat stereotypes and discrimination, and instead focus on inclusion and equal access to opportunity for all. The 2025 theme is "Improve Our Support Systems," which brings attention to the challenges that people with Down syndrome and their families face in receiving proper care, education, and opportunities they deserve.

Show your support by wearing mismatched socks, spreading the word and signing the CDSS' petition, available here.

Next week, Humber will introduce the new Downtown Campus webpages as part of the transition to a new Digital Experience Platform (DXP) that is transforming our website and the user experience on it.

Users will notice that the Downtown Campus webpages have been redesigned to enhance their onsite experience.

Research for the pages included extensive case study use along with profiles of current students and alumni to share their experience of Humber's Downtown Campus and the relevance, value and amenities available while studying in downtown Toronto.

The pages will also feature new content to support and highlight the Downtown Campus’ unique benefits. Industry connections and opportunities for participation are also included.

This launch continues our "Experience First" approach to migrating and implementing websites to DXP, focused on clarity about site audience, the journey being supported and the results that are most valued.

The new Downtown Campus webpages follow the model for other future Humber sites. After this launch, additional webpages will be updated in the coming months with other websites being prioritized to be migrated to DXP and the new design.

As Builders of Brilliance, Humber continues to define polytechnic education and reimagine learning. That includes providing an unparalleled student experience in person, on campus and digitally from our first interactions. The DXP is a reflection of this commitment that includes an integrated suite of tools and apps to create meaningful relationships with our prospects, students and alumni as they become engaged with Humber on our websites and digital media.

DXP is Humber’s investment in a new web platform that will support a radically enhanced online experience for all websites within the humber.ca domain. Learn more in the Communiqué post “What is DXP?”

The DXP-enabled humber.ca website is part of the Digital Student Experience (DSX) Program that emerged from the 2023-2026 Digital Campus and Academic Plans and focuses on enhancing the digital student experience.

Frank Cappadocia, Dean of CPL on the left stands next to a CPL learner at the 19,000th CPL Enrolled Learner event.

Humber Continuous Professional Learning (CPL) recently took the time to celebrate a milestone in its short history, marking 19,000+ enrolments in the 2023-2024 academic year.

Formerly Humber Continuing Education (CE), CPL was established in 2021 to oversee and champion Humber’s professional learning, upskilling, micro-credentialing and industry accreditations, and has seen significant growth since it’s inception. Frank Cappadocia, Dean of CPL, attributes this year's 37 per cent increase in enrolments to the collaborative efforts of individuals and teams across various areas of the Polytechnic, including CPL Central, Community Outreach Workforce Development (COWD), Education Training Services (ETS) and each Academic Faculty.

Supporters from across the institution gathered to mark the occasion, with remarks from the Dean and the 19,000th enrolled learner, mid-career learner Jason Mercier, VP Operations at Retirement Life Communities and current learner in the Condominium Management program. Jason admitted while his return to learning was born out of a need for formal accreditation, his experience with Humber has been a positive one, which has fueled his ambition to continue to pursue ongoing learning.

CPL has its sights set on continuing its upward trajectory as it rounds out the 2024-25 academic year, with many exciting projects and further milestones on the horizon.

For information about continuous professional learning options for you or your team, visit humber.ca/cpl.

We are thrilled to share the success of our 2025 Health Innovation Challenge. This year’s challenge brought together 40 talented students from 19 different programs from six faculties across Humber and Guelph-Humber as Humber Health Innovators, to create concepts for community-based, culturally sensitive, and family-focused programs to enhance the positive mental well-being of immigrant and refugee families in Peel Region.

This year, our student teams gained real world experience by working with mentors from five different community organizations, and we extend a heartfelt thank you to our mentors from Peel Newcomer Strategy Group, COSTI Immigrant Services, Roots Community Services, Punjabi Community Health Services, and Family Services of Peel, for guiding the Humber Health Innovator teams through this project. Many thanks as well to Dr. Blanca Bolea-Almanac, Psychiatrist and Scientist, Women's College Hospital for providing her time and insights to the teams as they developed their program concepts.

We heard from our inspiring keynote speaker, Aamna Ashraf, Senior Manager of Health Equity at CAMH, whose insights set a motivating tone for the day, and our community partner Dr. Cilia Mejia-Lancheros, Institute for Better Health - Trillium Health Partners, whose expertise and guidance was instrumental in shaping the students' projects. Dr. Mejia-Lancheros shared the performance of a Colombian Cumbia Traditional Dance, adding a vibrant touch to the event and showcasing the rich diversity within our community and our connection to the land.

The highlight of the day was the live pitches by the student teams, where they presented their program concepts to the audience. Their hard work and dedication were evident as their presentations generated strong engagement from the audience.

This year’s Health Innovation Challenge not only provided a platform for Humber students to showcase their innovative ideas but also emphasized the importance of cross faculty and inter- disciplinary work in solving complex problems such as accessibility of mental health supports for newcomers in an inclusive way. Through this innovative project and many such more, CIHW is creating a healthier tomorrow for all!
