Attention all Humber teachers:

We are looking for participants for our research study Artificial Intelligence Application Acceptance Survey (REB # 0360). This research project aims to learn more about what affects post-secondary instructors’ intentions to use generative artificial intelligence (genAI) in their teaching practices. The recent surge of genAI applications has created demands for the post-secondary sector to consider in the context of student learning. It has become clear that these applications are expected to continue to develop, improve, and become ubiquitous in the work we do. It is important for us to understand what influences teachers in their uptake of different artificial intelligence applications as we are learning that the use of these applications can support student learning.

Our research questions are:

  • Main research question - What predicts post-secondary instructors’ intention to adopt artificial intelligence in their pedagogies?
  • Secondary research question - What specific factors influence the integration of generative artificial intelligence in the pedagogies of post-secondary instructors?

Your participation will be confidential, anonymous, and private. Visit the following link where you will receive an explanation and access to the study. The study will be open until March 15, 2024. We hope that you will consider participating. If you have any questions you can reach out to jennie.miron@humber.ca.

Community Outreach & Workforce Development (COWD) and the Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology (FAST) are hosting the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) (District Event) at Humber College from March 18 to 20. This event will feature the best high school robotics teams in Ontario as they compete for four spots at the World Championship.

We are thrilled to announce an opportunity for Humber staff, faculty, and students to volunteer at the competition. Volunteers play a crucial role in making FRC events a success, contributing to the development of the next generation of innovators and leaders. By volunteering, you'll inspire and support young minds in their journey to explore STEM fields, all while being part of an exciting and rewarding community dedicated to shaping the future of technology.

Watch a video that shows what it's like to be a volunteer at one of these events.

We are looking for both faculty and students as volunteers:

Faculty

We are specifically looking to recruit faculty members as judges for the event. We really want our judge pool to reflect the diversity of our students in every aspect. That means all genders, races, ages, occupations and interests are welcome. No experience needed. You will receive all the training needed for the role. Judges play a crucial role in recognizing outstanding achievements in robot design, programming, and teamwork. We will give you all the training you need to feel comfortable in the role.

Time commitment:

  • Judges training dinner on March 18 (typically 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.)
  • Event competition judging days - two full days, March 19 and 20 (typically 7 a.m. - 5 p.m.)

About the FIRST Robotics Competition

The FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is an exhilarating global robotics competition for high school students. Each year, teams of students, guided by mentors, design, build, and program robots to compete in a unique game or challenge announced at the beginning of the season. The competition encourages teamwork, innovation, and problem-solving skills as participants collaborate to complete tasks and score points within a specified time frame. FRC combines the excitement of sports with the rigor of science and technology, fostering a spirit of friendly competition and promoting STEM education. Watch a video that shows what these events are like.

The 2023-2024 FIRST season, FIRST® IN SHOW presented by Qualcomm, is shining a spotlight on the role STEM plays in the arts and empowering young people to design and build a world of endless possibilities.

On Monday, February 26, the provincial government announced $1.3 billion in funding over three years for the post-secondary education sector. We are appreciative of this new investment and are awaiting further information from the Ministry of Colleges and Universities. Today’s funding announcement is an important first step in bolstering the financial sustainability of Ontario’s post-secondary sector.

The provincial government also announced its intention to allow colleges to offer Applied Master’s programs with an aim to have these programs meet the needs of employers and prepare students to be industry ready, in fields such as advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and animation.

Humber has always been at the forefront of innovation and the creation of applied master’s programs has been one of our advocacy priorities. This past spring, our board approved the creation of an Applied Master's program in Advanced Manufactuing, and we submitted the program to the Ministry for approval. We expect to learn the details about the approval timelines for new applied master’s degree programs in the coming weeks.

Humber is a leader in advanced manufacturing and has worked closely with industry partners to address the challenges and opportunities facing the sector, including through the establishment of the Advanced Manufacturing Skills Consortium and the work taking place within the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation.

The province is introducing the Strengthening Accountability and Student Supports Act, 2024. If passed, this would authorize the Minister to issue directives requiring colleges and universities to provide information about ancillary fees and other student costs, including costs for textbooks and other learning materials. It would also require that institutions have policies in place relating to mental health and wellness supports as well as policies to combat racism and hate.

Please view the full Ministry announcement for more details.

Dear Humber friends;

It is with profound sadness that we wish to inform the Humber community that Vanessa Vilic-Evangelista lost her fierce battle with cancer on the morning of Friday, February 23.

Vanessa began her Humber career as a Technologist supporting the Interior Decorating and Interior Design programs, and later as Professor and Program Coordinator of the Interior Decorating diploma. She has made many contributions to Humber’s Design programs, and played an instrumental role in the creation of the Humber Design Centre, including its recent renovation. It was under Vanessa’s leadership that the Interior Decorating diploma program grew to become one of the most highly subscribed Design programs at Humber, with very strong industry ties and reputation.

Vanessa touched so many with her passion for family, friendship, creativity in learning, and design; she approached everything she did with extreme passion, and those of us who had the pleasure to know her have witnessed this first-hand. She balanced family, work, advanced studies, and rich friendships in a way that no one ever felt she was too busy to make time for them.

It was Vanessa’s wish that we all honour her spirit for life and happiness by remembering her as she was, and we intend to do just that by holding a Celebration of Life at Humber, in the spring. Details will be shared when they are available.
