Your health, safety and well-being in the Humber workplace matters. Humber’s Well-being Strategy and Healthy You Hub was developed to help all members of the Humber community prioritize their overall well-being. Visit the Healthy You Hub for a variety of employee resources to assist with physical, mental, financial, and social health and well-being.

Physical activity can play a key role in our personal health and well-being. Remember that the use of the Athletic Centre is free for all employees. Humber’s fitness centres at both the North and Lakeshore campuses provide a wide variety of exercise options (including cardio and strength/conditioning). You may attend any of their fitness classes, ranging from cycling, fitness walks, boot camps, Zumba, yoga, and more. You can also sign up for personal training sessions with fully certified trainers at an additional cost. For more information on the fitness centres, including a schedule of fitness classes, please visit the Athletics webpage.

Lastly, Occupational Health and Safety Services encourages all employees to practice healthy behaviours at work and outside of the workplace. Small changes can have a substantial impact on your health and well-being. Consider the following:

  • If you work at a computer workstation, take micro-breaks to split periods of prolonged sitting.
  • Enjoy a relaxing activity during your lunchtime break.
  • Eat healthy and nutritious meals.
  • Take time for yourself outside of work and get plenty of rest.

May 5 to 11, 2025 is Mental Health Week in Canada. This week provides an opportunity for all of us to reflect on our mental health, support those around us, and advocate for better mental health resources. At the CIHW, we are dedicated to raising awareness and promoting the importance of mental well-being.

Did you know?

Language barriers, cultural differences, and limited awareness of available services are significant obstacles to accessing mental health support for immigrants and refugees in Canada (Mental health and well-being of recent immigrants in Canada: Evidence from the Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Canada (LSIC) - Canada.ca)

This year, CIHW's Health Innovation Challenge focused on the mental well-being of newcomer and refugee families in Peel Region. Our student competitors co-designed community-based, culturally sensitive, family-focused programs including communication strategies, peer support models, and digital education and awareness initiatives.

Together, we can create a culture that values and supports mental well-being, and a healthier future for all!

Do you have an innovative idea or know of an industry partner who wants to engage in applied research in health and innovation? Connect with us and email vanita.varma@humber.ca.

Most of us walk up and down the stairs or ramps on a daily basis. These can come with inherent risks that are not present with level surfaces. Consider the following tips next time you move along a staircase or ramp:

  • Remain vigilant: avoid distractions, such as using your phone.
  • Ensure you provide enough space to others and avoid rushing.
  • Use the right-hand side of the ramp or staircase when possible.
  • Use the handrails, particularly on staircases.
  • Avoid carrying objects with both hands or carrying bulky items that block your vision. Use a cart or elevator in these situations.
  • Wear sturdy and secure footwear and keep your laces tied.
  • If outdoors, be cautious of environmental conditions such as rain, ice or snow.

At Humber, we've taken great care to design and install staircases and ramps that minimize the chances of injury. However, if you notice a slip or trip hazard, you can report it through one of the following methods:

  • Call 416.675.6622 ext. 4444 (Capital Development & Facilities Management)
  • Call 416.675.8500 (Public Safety’s non-emergency number).
  • Use Public Safety’s Humber Guardian App to report a hazard or near miss tip.

For support on any health and safety issues, please notify Occupational Health and Safety Services at healthandsafety@humber.ca.
