Innovative Learning invites Humber faculty, staff, and student collaborators to join us for our annual SHOWCASE event celebrating teaching and learning innovations.

Date: Thursday, June 5, 2025
Location: Lakeshore Campus

This year’s SHOWCASE theme, Building Brilliance, encourages reflection on three key areas that inspire us to rethink and enhance the way we teach, collaborate, and create meaningful change in education.

As Canada faces a productivity crisis, impacting the strength of our economy and communities, Humber is responding in creative and meaningful ways—accelerating innovation, enhancing efficiency, and equipping learners with the skills needed to drive economic and social progress. When submitting your proposal, please share how it connects to the theme.

  • Reimagining Learning – Challenging traditional education models, leveraging technology, and creating personalized, future-focused learning experiences that enhance both individual and collective productivity.
  • Forging Deeper Partnerships – Collaborating with industry, communities, and global networks to enhance knowledge, productivity, and real-world impact.
  • Driving Impact – Advancing sustainability, fostering inclusive innovation, and addressing societal challenges through bold ideas and meaningful action that contribute to long-term economic and educational growth.

SESSION TYPES

Faculty, Staff and Student Collaborators (NEW!): Inviting Humber faculty and staff to submit a proposal to co-present with student research partners on projects they contributed to that have a direct impact on the Humber community. Please see below for session types:

1. Posters (90 minutes): This is an interactive session to showcase your research or Academic Plan project, to engage with attendees and have informal discussions.

2. Interactive Panel (45 minutes): This interactive panel session brings together students and faculty to engage in a dynamic discussion on the evolving landscape of education. Participants will share insights, experiences, and ideas on how collaboration between faculty and students can enhance learning outcomes. Through an open dialogue, attendees will explore innovative teaching strategies, challenges, and solutions that empower students and create more inclusive, impactful learning environments.

3. Demonstration Galleries (45 minutes): An opportunity to share innovative pedagogical practices, emphasizing the collaboration between faculty and students using tools and strategies to foster brilliance in the classroom. Presenters will engage in interactive activities and tools that demonstrate students' active roles in their learning, showcasing their contributions to the evolution of teaching practices. If hosting a session in a specialty lab or classroom, you are responsible for confirming space availability and making the booking in advance.

Faculty and Staff Sessions:

1. Interactive Workshop (45 minutes): Share a component of your teaching practice that you've developed, guiding your colleagues and inspiring them to use your experience as a model for their own innovations. Workshop topics could include innovative teaching and learning practices, interdisciplinary projects, fostering inclusive learning environments, and strategies for enhancing student engagement and success.

2. Lightning Talk (15 mins = 10 minutes plus 5 mins Q&A): Present your ideas and activities that shape how you are redefining learning, deepening industry partnerships, and driving impact in a shorter session.

The Lightning Talk session lasts 45 minutes and features three separate talks, with organizers making an effort to group them by shared or similar themes. We encourage you to consider a collaborative, shared time slot with your colleagues.

3. Sharing Circle (45 minutes): A respectful space for listening, learning, and exchanging, where each member has the opportunity to express their experiences, and only one person speaks at a time without interruptions. The circle is inclusive, ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard and respected. Sharing circles are guided by a facilitator, will focus on a specific theme, such as inclusion in the classroom, mental health and well-being, or fostering a culture of respect amongst learners. Facilitators should follow the attached guidelines and may meet with a member of the Indigenous Education & Engagement team to learn the full protocol. 4. Exhibit Centre (90 minutes): The event will run through the lunch hour, serving as a live and interactive community space. The Exhibit Booth provides Faculties and Departments with the opportunity to showcase recent, current, or upcoming Humber projects and initiatives. From March 24 to April 1, 2025, Humber Polytechnic welcomed institutional leaders from Kenyan institutions Bondo Technical Training Institute (BTTI), Lucy Onono Vocational Training Centre (VTC), and Mahaya Vocational Training Centre (VTC) from Kenya as part of the Kenya Blue Economy Skills Training (KBEST-05) project.

The visit provided invaluable insight for both Kenyan and Humber partners. Throughout the week, BTTI, Lucy Onono VTC, and Mahaya VTC leaders engaged with Humber faculty and staff from various departments on Humber's best practices in key areas such as industry partnerships, apprenticeship programs, gender mainstreaming in TVET (technical and vocational education and training), student services, STEAM career support for women, inclusive leadership, career guidance, EDI, entrepreneurship, change management, transition-to-work strategies, recognition of prior learning, and supporting women in trades and technical fields.

"The visit from the Kenyan delegation was a truly enriching experience for our team. It deepened our appreciation for the diversity of approaches to education, and we are excited to strengthen our partnership moving forward," said Paul Griffin, Senior Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology.

The sessions and conversations during the week allowed Kenyan and Humber partners to exchange knowledge, expertise, and varying perspectives.

"I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Humber team for your support throughout the visit to Humber. This partnership is instrumental in making this experience possible, allowing us to gain invaluable insights and best practices to enhance our work in our institutions," shared Violet Atieno, ICT Instructor and Gender Mainstreaming Chairperson at Bondo Technical Training Institute, Kenya.

Enhancing leadership skills today equips individuals with the vision, adaptability, and innovation needed to shape a stronger, more resilient future. Learn more about KBEST-05

Attention Faculty:

Further to the announcements in the Communiqué during the month of March, please know that ETS Testing Services is working hard behind the scenes to ensure the upcoming final exam period is smooth, accessible and student-centered. Due to space constraints, our testing centres are prioritizing accommodated testing and proposing an alternative solution to support students that are missing examinations due to exceptional circumstances including, but not limited to, exam conflicts, illness, deaths, accidents and family emergencies.

We have selected several dates for these make-up examinations. Read below for the dates and on how to arrange a testing seat for your student(s).

Lakeshore Test Centre: We are now accepting additional bookings outside of accommodated testing. We have some capacity to support these exceptional circumstances and will monitor to ensure students are supported. Please encourage your students to make use of appointments in the afternoon.

North Test Centre: To assist with the volume of expected students requiring space in the test centre, ETS Testing Services will be hosting exams in an alternate testing space (computer lab and classroom) on:

  •  Thursday, April 10 and Friday, April 11
  • Tuesday, April 15 and Thursday, April 17

Faculty are asked to send a list of students who require the space (for conflict testing or exceptional circumstances) to the etstestcentre@humber.ca email.

Faculty should include the following in their email:

  • student name(s) and email addresses
  • paper exam or computer exam (computer/Blackboard/Ideas etc. are strongly encouraged as it helps with workflow efficiency)
  • Password/access codes if required
  • duration of exam
  • any accommodations in the list
  • resources and supports allowed during the test
  • any specific invigilation requirements/exam expectations

Staff from the testing services team will confirm receipt of the email, and work with the students/faculty directly to book into the schedule of the testing space.

Once examinations are confirmed and prior to the exam date, if the exam is paper based, faculty sends etstestcentre@humber.ca the examination file (word or PDF). If computer-based, please ensure any access codes/passwords are also shared in advance to the email address above.Testing Services will resume normal working hours as of April 25.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Katarina Mebaoudj, Testing Services Manager, at katarina.mebaoudj@humber.ca.

March 24 to April 15 is SFQ Season for 14-week courses!

Student Feedback Questionnaires (SFQs) invite students to provide anonymous feedback on their learning experience in each course each semester to support our shared commitment to ensuring the quality of our academic programs at Humber. Student feedback is anonymous and confidential, and is not used to evaluate your job performance.

Please review these important points about the Winter 2025 Student Feedback Questionnaires (SFQs):

  1. Instructors, please schedule 20 minutes of in-class time when students will complete the SFQ. This ensures students are aware of the SFQ, and have time to answer them. Consider stepping out of the class during this time to allow students to have peace of mind when answering their SFQs. Sharing an example of how this feedback has helped improve course content provides an example for students of what to provide feedback on, and that their voices are heard.
  2. Instructors must enable the SFQ in Blackboard following this process (Visual instructions for adding your SFQ into Blackboard are available):
  • Select "Books & Tools" (Details & Actions, left course content menu)
  • Click "+" next to "Student Feedback Questionnaire"
  • Once added to the course content, make the SFQ visible for students.

As a thank you for sharing their perspectives, students who complete the SFQ are eligible to enter into a Prize draw. The Grand prize winner can choose between an iPad or an iPhone. This SFQ contest ends on May 2, with the draw for the iPhone or iPad happening on May 8.

Please Note: As a thank you when more than 50 per cent of the students in a faculty member's course complete the SFQ, the faculty member is automatically entered into a raffle for an on-campus food services gift card, or service at the Humber room.
