We are writing to provide an update on the After-Hours Mental Health Support pilot project that was introduced in collaboration with the Canadian Mental Health Association Toronto (CMHATO) on February 12, 2024.

The pilot project has gained remarkable traction since its initiation, and we are delighted to share that over the first two weeks of its implementation, we recorded a total of 194 engagements and offered crucial one-to-one mental health support to 39 learners. This exceptional uptake underscores the significance of providing accessible mental health resources during high-stress periods through the academic year.

CMHATO is actively present on-site at both the Lakeshore and North campus from Monday to Friday, operating between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., and will continue to do so until April 16, 2024. The designated locations for support are as follows:

  • North Campus: Learning Commons, room 3005
  • Lakeshore Campus: Learning Commons, room L1017

This pilot project is designed to provide crucial evening mental health support to our learners, ensuring timely assistance during high-stress periods throughout the winter semester. Recognizing the diverse challenges faced by our learners concerning the social determinants of health, this strategic partnership not only promotes individual well-being but also facilitates seamless connections to community resources.

If you are teaching faculty and would like to amplify this pilot project in your classroom you can download the attached promotional slides to integrate into your classes and share widely with your learners.

We encourage you to share your thoughts and feedback on this exciting pilot project, as well as continue to promote this initiative with your networks. For any inquiries or further information, please feel free to contact Gabriela Yepez at gabriela.yepez@humber.ca.

Thank you for your continued support as we work together to enhance the mental health and well-being of our learners.

What is an International Student Advisor & Immigration Specialist/International Graduate School Advisor & Immigration Specialist (ISAIS/IGSAIS) and what do they do?

Did you know that Humber has seven dedicated staff members who work as advisors to international students? They are all licensed Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants (RCICs) or Regulated International Student Immigration Advisors (RISIAs), meaning they are legally authorized to advise international students on issues related to immigration applications (eg. Study Permits, Co-op Work Permits, Work Authorization, Post-Graduation Work Permits, etc.). There is no additional cost for international students to access this highly specialized service through the Humber ISAIS/IGSAIS team.

The ISAISs/IGSAIS:

  • Provide non-academic student support and immigration advising to students and immigration counsel to the Humber community
  • Develop, deliver, and support culturally relevant international student programming
  • Lead and support the development of comprehensive international student transition & support plans
  • Mediate international student issues with contacts both inside and outside Humber
  • Can support programs via classroom visits (in-person or virtual)

North Campus

Sanjay Kumar, RCIC
Shi Yue Zhang, RCIC

Lakeshore Campus

On Monday, April 8, 2024, much of southern Ontario will experience a total (or near-total) solar eclipse between approximately 2 - 4:30 p.m., with the peak occurring at 3:19 p.m. in Toronto. A solar eclipse is when the moon moves between the sun and the Earth for a short period of time. Some areas in southern Ontario will experience a full eclipse, but much of Ontario will experience a partial solar eclipse.

While this is an incredibly rare event that many of us are excited to experience, looking directly at the sun for any length of time is very hazardous to the eyes – it can impact your vision and cause permanent damage.

During the solar eclipse, keep these safety tips in mind to protect your eyes:

  • Do not look directly at the sun.
  • Do not use cameras, telescopes, or other optical or homemade devices to view the eclipse.
  • Regular sunglasses will not provide adequate protection. If you would like to view the eclipse, only use proper solar eclipse viewing glasses/filters that comply with the international standard ISO 12312-2(2015).
  • Consider other ways of experiencing the eclipse, such as through online streams. For example, NASA will be live streaming the event for free.

The peak of the eclipse will come with a few minutes of darkness. While the peak in Toronto is expected at 3:19 p.m., be sure to know what time of day the eclipse peak will occur in your area and be vigilant of your surroundings during this time.

For more information, please visit the City of Toronto’s Solar Eclipse Safety page.

We need your help. Have you had success implementing HLO Mindsets and Skills into your classes? We'd love your help in supporting other teaching faculty as they explore HLOs (Humber Learning Outcomes) in their courses.

Innovative Learning will run a series of workshops on HLOs in the May-June period, and we would love to highlight the expertise of teaching faculty who currently have a very good handle on HLO Mindsets, as well as examples of the ways that HLO Skills in Action have been implemented into teaching and learning at Humber.

There are two ways to get involved:

1. Seeking secondees to support workshops in May-June for other faculty on HLO Mindsets (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging, Sustainability, Systems Thinking, and Indigenous Ways of Being, Knowing and Doing). Please check with your AD to explore options for a bit of time each week. For the sake of this conversation, we unofficially anticipate this may be one to two hours a week, depending on the nature of the topic and the number of secondees available to support their peers.

2. Seeking examples of how you have successfully integrated HLO Skills in Action into your teaching. We would love to showcase your innovation to the teaching community at Humber.

Please reach out to ranya.khan@humber.ca or heather.lowry@humber.ca to share ideas, examples, or questions.

Almost ten years ago, Humber introduced the Integrated Energy Master Plan (IEMP), a 20-year strategy that guides our campus energy efficiency, greenhouse gas and water reduction goals.

Through multiple construction and retrofit projects since 2014-2015, so far we have achieved:

  • 24.2% reduction in energy use per square foot
  • 11% reduction in GHG emissions
  • 23.7% reduction in water use per student
  • about $8.6 million savings in utilty costs

We are on track to meet our IEMP goals and reduce our environmental impact while growing our campuses and giving students the chance to contribute to a greener future.

Watch the IEMP Progress video to learn more about our work so far, and access the IEMP page for more information about the plan.
