Celebrating Academic Upgrading Graduates: A Milestone of Growth and Possibility

On July 4, we proudly celebrated the graduation of over 60 learners from the Academic Upgrading program—an inspiring event that marked not only academic achievement but also perseverance, transformation, and new beginnings.

The Academic Upgrading program plays a vital role in opening doors to post-secondary education and career advancement. Designed for adult learners seeking to strengthen foundational skills in English, math, science, and computers, the program empowers individuals to meet admission requirements and thrive in future academic pathways. Many of this year’s graduates are now preparing to transition into a wide range of Humber programs—turning their hard work into exciting next steps.

This celebration is more than a graduation—it is a recognition of courage, commitment, and the belief that education can change lives. Each graduate’s journey reflects the transformative power of second chances and the value of inclusive, learner-centered support.

We would also like to take the time to recognize the recipient of the Senior Dean’s Award, Joyti Devi, and recipient of the Outstanding Student Award, Daniel Picciano, who excelled in their Academic Upgrading classes and who found new motivation and confidence to start their full time programs at Humber.”

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Academic Upgrading staff and faculty, whose unwavering dedication, compassion, and guidance have made these successes possible. Your efforts continue to shape brighter futures, not just for your students, but for the communities they go on to serve.

Congratulations to all our graduates—you are proof that it’s never too late to begin again, and that every step forward is a step toward something greater.

Dear Humber Community,

Thank you for continuing to engage in thoughtful dialogue around Humber Polytechnic’s financial outlook and our shared future. Over the past months, we’ve received insightful feedback from individuals across the institution through the Expenditure Cutting and Revenue Generating Ideas webform that was shared at the spring Town Hall sessions. Your contributions reflect the innovative nature and strength of our community, and our collective commitment to achieving a balanced 2025/26 budget and ensuring Humber’s long-term financial sustainability.

In addition to the webform, feedback has been gathered through a student budget consultation session, along with Humber Polytechnic Council, Program Advisory Committee (PAC) and Faculty-specific sessions.

To drive continued progress, we’re pleased to share the launch of the Humber Revenue Generating Committee – a cross-functional team dedicated to identifying and advancing revenue-generating opportunities. The committee has already begun reviewing community submissions. Next steps include prioritizing proposals, forming project teams, and developing implementation and reporting plans. The Committee is committed to open communication, measurable outcomes, action-orientation and values-driven decision making.

We remain guided by our core institutional principles of putting students first, supporting our employees, and upholding transparency and accountability. These values will continue to shape how we respond to challenges and seize new opportunities.

We invite all members of the Humber community to be bold, creative and entrepreneurial. Share your institutional knowledge and valued expert insights on all aspects of our ecosystem to support the mission toward a financially viable future. Continue submitting ideas through the Expenditure Cutting and Revenue Generating Ideas webform. All submissions will be thoughtfully reviewed by the Humber Revenue Generating Committee.

Thank you for your continued dedication to Humber Polytechnic. Together, through collaboration and innovation, we will shape a resilient and thriving future.

Sincerely,

Alvina Cassiani and Dave Smiderle

Faculty standing in the FAST office.

The Centre for Innovation in Health and Wellness (CIHW) is excited to share the success of a recent collaborative project between CIHW and the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology (FAST).

As CIHW projects continued to grow, we faced the challenge of having our data points stored on a variety of platforms and wanted a solution to streamline them into an executive dashboard for easy viewing.

Humber student Muskanpreet Kaur (Winter 2025) from the Computer Technician Program took on this challenge as her technical project. Focusing on our Healthy Campus program data, she successfully implemented a data analytic solution using Excel and built a dashboard that is now deployed at CIHW for production use for multiple projects.

Many thanks to Muskanpreet, Professor Tim Wong, Associate Dean Francis Syms, and FAST for collaborating with us.

This project not only provided us with a real-world, usable solution but also offered Muskanpreet invaluable experience in data analytics and dashboard creation. Her work exemplifies the impact of hands-on learning and the importance of student skill building in real-world applications.

The Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE) is pleased to announce the publication of “An Innovative Approach to Health Sector Regulatory Compliance Education” by Shyam Mohamed, MSc. and Ajay Rampersad, MSc.

Abstract:

The essay presents the authors' experience implementing a competency-based education (CBE) pilot program for the Health Sector Regulatory Compliance (HSRC) graduate certificate program at Humber Polytechnic. It also explores the authors' experience of the design, execution, and outcomes of an innovative 18-credit integrated course, “Health Sector Regulatory Skills in Practice” (HSRC 5020), which consolidated learning outcomes from four second-semester courses.

The CBE approach prioritizes skill mastery over traditional credit-hour models, addressing the growing skills gap between academia and industry. The HSRC program’s pilot focused on students demonstrating four core competencies: Audit and Inspection Management, Risk and Compliance Management, Regulatory Research and Analysis, and Trending and Data Analysis.  Faculty evaluated each competency on a scale from ‘Foundational’ to ‘Developing’ to ‘Proficient,’ providing students with regular feedback and coaching sessions. The course followed a 7-1-7 format, combining structured learning periods with a mid-term break. Implementation involved course design considerations, resource allocation, and student engagement through weekly coaching sessions and project-based learning activities. Assessment methods were diverse and authentic, including written reports, oral presentations, and digital portfolios, allowing students to demonstrate their skills through differentiated formats. The student feedback highlighted the benefits of self-paced learning, practical application of skills, and course flexibility. Students valued the autonomy to control their educational journey, emphasizing real-world scenarios. However, the challenges noted include students’ inexperience with digital portfolios and the need for enhanced communication with instructors.

The CBE pilot successfully delivered a first-of-its-kind, unified ‘open learning’ stream that provided a flexible, practical, and personalized learning experience, fostering students’ autonomy, critical thinking, and real-world readiness. Improvement recommendations include enhancing instructor-student communication and increasing industry relevance through software training and potential site visits. These findings contribute to the ongoing discussion on innovative educational approaches in higher education, particularly in professional fields requiring regulatory compliance expertise.

Dear Humber Community,

A heartfelt thank you to the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre for your intentional and thoughtful leadership throughout Pride Month. Your commitment to creating safer, braver, and more joyful spaces across Humber continues to shape our institution in powerful and lasting ways.

This year’s theme—All In: Honouring Every Path to Pride, celebrated the rich diversity within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. It reminded us that Pride is not one experience, one voice, or one moment. It is the everyday work of showing up, affirming identity, and honouring the many ways people journey toward visibility, self-love, and belonging.

Aligned with Humber’s Building Brilliance framework and our EDIB Action Plan, Pride Month had a tangible impact:

Pride in Action:
Through programming, partnership, and presence, our community brought Pride to life in meaningful ways:

  • Pride Month featured 22 events across our campuses focused on community building and learning and development, with highlights including the vibrant Opening Ceremony at Lakeshore Campus featuring the RAW Taiko Drummers.
  • 12 campus partners led their own programming and engaging events, including the Pride & Polished celebration at North Campus and hands-on creative workshops from the IDEA Lab.
  • Over 50 staff, faculty, students, and alumni joined us across three Pride marches during the weekend, building visibility, joy, and solidarity. Watch our Humber Pride recap here: Instagram Reel
  • We proudly partnered with 4 incredible community organizations, The ArQuives, Pride Toronto, The 519, and RAW Taiko, strengthening community connections and amplifying impact.
  • We received 8 creative and heartfelt submissions for Display Your Pride sharing what Pride means to them. (Winners to be announced shortly!)

Carrying Pride Forward:
While June may be over, our commitment to 2SLGBTQIA+ belonging continues year-round. Here are a few ways to stay connected and engaged:

To our incredible Humber community, the 2SLGBTQ+ ERG, student leaders and campus partners, thank you for standing alongside the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre and helping to bring Pride Month to life. Your collaboration, advocacy, and presence made all the difference.

Pride doesn’t end in June. Let’s continue this work—all in, together.

With appreciation,

Kimberly Daniels
