These are the highlights of this month’s new and improved features in Blackboard Ultra that will be live Thursday, April 3rd. The most relevant updates are related to a few key key areas:

  • Instructional design
  • Communication & Collaboration
  • and Gradebook

Learn more about the full update at Anthology's Blackboard website.

Instructional Design

Content Designer: Print Document

Instructors and students can now print Documents or save them to PDF, providing more ways to engage with content. This new option allows users to:

  • Review content offline
  • Share content with students or peers
  • Physically archive content

To print a Document, select Print. Use the browser to print options to select the following:

  • A printer or the PDF option
  • The page range
  • The layout

Communication & Collaboration

Pop-out rubric when evaluating an attempt

Anthology has improved sending messages from the Course Activity report.

  • Instructors can now select all students for courses with over 3000 students. Previously, the option to select all students was only for courses with 3000 students or fewer.
  • To be more user-friendly, the Recipients field now includes the following group labels:
    • All students
    • Selected students
    • Selected students with alerts
    • Selected students without alerts

These enhancements make it easier to communicate with students in large classes, including students with or without alerts.

Activity indicator color changed to purple

The color of the activity indicator for discussions, journals, and conversations is changed from blue to purple to better unify the color scheme of Blackboard. Users now have a more consistent and cohesive experience.

Two course content items, a Document and a journal, have a purple activity indicator beside the title

Gradebook

Indicator if student has or has not reviewed feedback

In the Gradebook, instructors now have enhanced ability to monitor student engagement with assessment feedback. An indicator on the student Overview page now displays whether a student has reviewed the feedback for a given assessment.

When a grade is posted, the indicator includes a label of Not reviewed with the existing Completed label in the Status column. When the student reviews the feedback, the status updates to Reviewed with a review timestamp.

If the new grade indicator is reset for the assessment, such as when a grade is updated or if the assessment has multiple attempts, the timestamp updates when the student reviews the feedback again. If all attempts are deleted, the Not reviewed or Reviewed label is removed.

Replace Feedback column with actionable Results column in student Gradebook

To encourage student to review their submitted assessments in the Gradebook:

  • A new Results column replaces the Feedback column
  • View button in the new Results column replaces the Feedback column's purple feedback icon

When a grade is posted and the new grade indicator (purple circle) is turned on, the View button displays for the assessment. By proving a clear call-to-action, students are more likely to review their submission and feedback.

Enhanced grading experience for group submissions

Anthology has migrated group grading to Flexible Grading. Instructors now have a more streamlined experience when grading group assignment and test submissions in Flexible Grading. This update allows instructors to benefit from the more efficient grading interface and workflow of Flexible Grading when evaluating group submissions.

Some capabilities for individual submissions, such as per question feedback on group test submissions and pop-out rubric on group assignment submissions, will be added to group submissions after this initial release.

The new DXP-enabled Downtown Campus webpages are live. The new webpages (humber.ca/downtowncampus), are part of the Digital Experience Platform (DXP) that is transforming Humber’s website and the user experience on it.

The Humber Downtown Campus webpages have a different look and feel and have been redesigned to align with and enhance the user’s journey and experience.

Research for the pages included extensive case study use and profiles of current students and alumni to share their experience of Humber's Downtown Campus and the relevance, value and amenities available while studying in downtown Toronto.

The pages also feature new content to support and highlight the Downtown Campus’ unique benefits. Industry connections and opportunities for participation are also included.

This launch continues our "Experience First" approach to migrating and implementing websites to DXP, focused on clarity about site audience, the journey being supported and the results that are most valued.

The Experience First approach has resulted in increased *user engagement on our sites. This is most noticeable on the International site, which has consistently had user engagement scores of between 92 and 94 per cent since launch. Humber's engagement is above the 71 per cent industry norm for higher education and colleges.

We encourage you to visit www.humber.ca/downtowncampus and explore the new design, structure and end-to-end experience. Additional webpages will be updated over the coming months, along with the rest of humber.ca being migrated to DXP and the new design.

As Builders of Brilliance, Humber continues to define polytechnic education and reimagine learning. That includes providing an unparalleled student experience in person, on campus and digitally from our first interactions. The DXP is a reflection of this commitment that includes an integrated suite of tools and apps to create meaningful relationships with our prospects, students and alumni as they become engaged with Humber on our websites and digital media.

We are grateful for the tireless efforts of the teams and individuals working on the DXP project to bring these webpages online.

The DXP is part of the Digital Student Experience (DSX) Program that emerged from the 2023-2026 Digital Campus and Academic Plans and focuses on reshaping and improving the student experience online.

*Engagement is a measure of how much time and interaction with a site visitors have with a site; engagement scores over 90 per cent are considered exceptional.

This very special day happens annually on March 21 (symbolic of Trisomy 21), and is celebrated in 190 countries.

Today, we choose to learn about and uplift the Down syndrome community, and give recognition to the incredible accomplishments of people born with this condition, including Humber alumna Jessica Rotolo.

It is a time to come together and show support for one another, to combat stereotypes and discrimination, and instead focus on inclusion and equal access to opportunity for all. The 2025 theme is "Improve Our Support Systems," which brings attention to the challenges that people with Down syndrome and their families face in receiving proper care, education, and opportunities they deserve.

Show your support by wearing mismatched socks, spreading the word and signing the CDSS' petition, available here.
