The Community of Interest (CI) offers an informal, virtual platform for Humber faculty (full and part-time), staff, and students to connect and engage in conversations about their shared interest in topics related to aging. This virtual 'brown bag' lunch conversation will revolve around subjects that matter to participants, such as articles they would like to discuss, upcoming events, potential research projects, and the sharing of research results. The community gets together monthly on the third Thursday of the month from 12 to 1 p.m.

Occupational Health and Safety Services

In keeping with Humber’s commitment to provide a safe and healthy working and learning environment, Occupational Health and Safety Services (OHS) has developed a new Office Ergonomics Training Module, which is now posted on the OHS website. This training module informs employees on how to properly set up a safe and comfortable office workstation, and provides an overview of good work practices to prevent potential discomfort and pain. All employees are encouraged to complete the module, which takes approximately 35 minutes.

If you are experiencing discomfort at your workstation, have a documented medical condition, or require general workstation set-up assistance, follow the steps outlined on the Office Ergonomics website:

  1. Complete the Office Ergonomics Self-Assessment Checklist.
  2. Refer to the Tools and Tips information on the website to improve your set-up.
  3. Complete the Office Ergonomics Training Module (via Go1).
  4. If you still require assistance, speak to your manager to arrange an office ergonomics assessment through OHS. We ask you to complete the training module prior to having an assessment performed.

We encourage you to review our Office Ergonomics website which has been updated with additional resources, including stretching resources and remote working resources.

If you have any questions regarding the new office ergonomics resources or the process to have an assessment performed, please speak to your manager or contact OHS (healthandsafety@humber.ca).

Attention all Humber Teachers:

We are looking for participants for our research study, Artificial Intelligence Application Acceptance Survey (REB #0360). This research project aims to learn more about what affects post-secondary instructors’ intention to use generative artificial intelligence (genAI) in their teaching practices. The recent surge of genAI applications has created demands for the post-secondary sector to consider in the context of student learning. It has become clear that these applications are expected to continue to develop, improve, and become ubiquitous in the work we do. It is important for us to understand what influences teachers in their uptake of different artificial intelligence applications as we are learning that the use of these applications can support student learning.

Our research questions are:

Main Research Question - What predicts post-secondary instructors’ intention to adopt artificial intelligence in their pedagogies?

Secondary Research Question - What specific factors influence the integration of generative artificial intelligence in the pedagogies of post-secondary instructors?

Your participation will be confidential, anonymous, and private.

View the explanation and access to the study

The study is open now. We hope that you will consider participating. If you have any questions you can reach out to Jennie Miron, Principal Investigator, at jennie.miron@humber.ca.

Student Wellness and Equitable Learning is thrilled to announce a collaborative initiative between Humber College and the Canadian Mental Health Association Toronto (CMHATO). Based on feedback from students and faculty, and grounded in a commitment within Humber’s Well-being Strategy to boost a diversity of mental health supports and resources, we are launching a pilot project designed to provide crucial evening mental health support to our learners, ensuring timely assistance during high-stress periods throughout the winter semester.

Commencing on February 12, 2024, CMHATO will be present on-site at both the Lakeshore and North campuses from Monday to Friday, operating between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. for a period of eight weeks. The designated locations for support are as follows:

  • North Campus: Learning Commons, room 3005 (located on the third floor inside the Math & Writing Centre)
  • Lake Campus: Learning Commons, room L1017 (located on the main floor)

This pilot project aims to offer our learners a meaningful alternative to the emergency department, while enhancing accessibility to mental health resources on campus. Recognizing the diverse challenges faced by our learners concerning the social determinants of health, this strategic partnership not only promotes individual well-being but also facilitates seamless connections to community resources.

For any inquiries or further information about this exciting pilot project, please feel free to reach out to gabriela.yepez@humber.ca.

Employee Learning to Support Student Well-being

Post-secondary studies and various environmental, systemic and structural factors can have adverse effects on learner's mental health and well-being. Generally, there are signs that a learner is struggling long before a situation escalates into a crisis.

Faculty and staff are well-positioned to recognize behaviour that may indicate that a learner is in distress and may require support. Being able to recognize the signs of distress and make appropriate referrals are critical first steps in supporting learner well-being.

The Responding to Students in Distress website and the Student Wellness and Equitable Learning Handout have resources for faculty and staff to learn more about steps they can take to support learners, as well as information about the “Recognize, Respond and Support a Learner in Distress” Workshop that is available to the Humber Community. Faculty and staff who interact with students are encouraged to take this workshop.

For more information about employee learning resources, please visit the Professional Learning section of the People(s) & Culture website.
