The Centre for Innovation in Health and Wellness (CIHW) is excited to announce the launch of a new research report, Understanding the Impact of COVID-19 on Youth Mental Health in North Etobicoke.

Funded by United Way Greater Toronto, the purpose of the research report was to understand and learn directly from youth on their experiences living through the COVID-19 pandemic, and their pandemic recovery needs. CIHW staff and student research assistants conducted the mixed-methodology research project with more than 100 young people aged 18-25, living in the North Etobicoke community.

Read the full story on Humber Today.

The report will be released as part of the Etobicoke Youth Wellness Event, being hosted at Humber College on Saturday, June 8 from 1 to 6 p.m.

An assembly of faculty, support staff, students, and administrators, Humber College Council (HCC) is Humber’s collective employee voice, making suggestions to Humber College’s President as it relates to long and short‐term institutional priorities.

At its sixth meeting of the academic year, College Council welcomed an update on Humber’s International Student admissions process and Humber’s draft EDIB Roadmap.

HUMBER’S INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ADMISSION PROCESS

Information presented by Drew Ness, Dean, International.

International students are an important and valued part of the Humber community, enriching the learning environment with their unique experiences and perspectives. On January 22, 2024, the Federal government announced a national cap on international study permit applications for a period of two years - in 2024, the cap is 364,000. This is having an impact throughout the Ontario post-secondary sector, and across the country. Humber is concerned about its impact on students and their communities.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) also announced a series of changes to the requirements international students must meet to be able to secure a study permit. All applications for a study permit must now include a letter of acceptance (LOA) and a provincial attestation letter (PAL). Every institution enrolling international students, including Humber, has a limited number of PALs available to grant to applicants to apply for a study permit. Humber wants to ensure that every Humber applicant that is given a PAL completes their enrolment process, including applying for a study permit. To do this, Humber launched a new process. HUMBER’S DRAFT EDIB ROADMAP

Information presented by Yasmin Razack, Dean, EDIB

Humber has established a new Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging. The work of the former Office of Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion in terms of processing human rights complaints remains within People(s) and Culture, under the Legal team and is now named the Office of Harassment and Human Rights.

The new EDIB office is working on Humber’s next EDIB strategy and roadmap: Building Connections. The current draft was a result of substantial consultation and input from Humber’s EDI Taskforce and a firm specializing in addressing workplace inequities, All Things Equitable. The team is currently tabling the draft plan with the Humber community to ensure its focus areas and areas of action resonate with them. HCC reviewed the draft plan and provided feedback to the EDIB team. Building Connections is expected to be launched this fall.

NEXT HCC MEETING

The next Humber College Council meeting will be held in September 26, 2024 (TBC). HCC will host its in-person retreat on June 12, 2024 at the Lakeshore campus.

The Postsecondary Education Standards Development Committee (PESDC) 2022 Final Report identified nine barriers to access.  Biweekly, ALS will be doing a deep dive into the barriers and recommendations identified.

The recommendations were founded upon principles that accessibility efforts should be proactive, that all areas of an institution have a shared responsibility in promoting access and that students need to navigate a transparent and seamless system.

This week’s focus is on awareness and training barriers.

  • Accessibility and inclusion are constantly evolving. Ongoing training is needed to ensure knowledge is current. The report recommends accessibility training be renewed every three years for all postsecondary employees.

  • The report outlines additional training recommendations for specific audiences.

  • Training for educators and librarians to include their responsibility in procuring accessible equipment and course content material, the accommodation process as outlined by the Ontario Human Rights Code, and the impact of selecting teaching materials late for students with disabilities.

  • Training for administrators and leadership in postsecondary to include system-level barriers to accessibility and the impacts of policy decisions, the impact of staffing decisions (i.e. late hiring and sessional staff) for students with disabilities in the impacts of lack of funding for additional accessibility training.

The full report is available

Visit our ALS Information for Faculty website to learn more about accommodating students with disabilities.

Please email us at accessible-learning@humber.ca with suggestions for key accessibility-related topics that you would like us to address through the Communiqué.

The Humber logo and a blue box appears on an image of glass building. The wording in the text box reads: Year One Insights: Academic and Digital Campus Plans.

Over the last year, teams across Humber have been working to transform the future of work to increase collaboration, effectiveness and to keep us connected with campus community and culture.

As we noted in the Digital Campus of Tomorrow, Humber’s Digital Campus Plan, we are being intentional in our actions to evolve the digital workplace and continue to adapt to the changing environment and needs of staff.

Initiatives related to the Digital Workplace can help enhance and better reflect the current workflows for staff across the organization. Some of these initiatives include:

The Launch of Copilot, Humber’s AI Chat Solution

  • Copilot is just like ChatGPT, but it has commercial data protection from Microsoft and offers up-to-date information. This means that you can input proprietary information into the tool without worry that it will become public information. It can also assist with generating new ideas, improving writing, and summarizing long text.

  • As you continue to explore this new AI tool, ITS reminds you to use Copilot ethically and responsibly, based on Humber’s General Statement on Using Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Tools at Work. This tool is available to all Humber staff and information about how to access it is available in this earlier Communique post. Faculty can also reference the academic guidelines on the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in the Classroom.

Exploration of Co-Pilot 365

  • Humber has been testing “Microsoft Co-Pilot for 365” as a pre-pilot within Information Technology Services which is set to be completed in the next two months. This tool provides next-level AI that is integrated within the suite of Microsoft tools within Microsoft 365.

  • This functionality is not part of the standard Microsoft 365 offering. However, once the initial exploration is complete, Humber will expand to a pilot of the tool to faculty and staff outside of ITS. This will build on the learnings from the pre-pilot and include updated training materials and input from those involved. A student from the Research Analyst program will be assisting with determining the benefit of the tool to staff, based on their role.

Unified Communications 2.0

  • Humber is working toward advancing communication and collaboration across the institution. There are three elements to this work:

  • A transition to a Contact Centre as a Service will help to improve the experience of those contacting Humber with an inquiry. They will be able to do so through phones, email, social media, chat and an AI Chat bot. This will provide flexibility to inquirers and allow our Contact Centre team to continue to provide important information to our community in a fast and efficient manner.

  • Replacing desk phones and telephone extensions with Teams Phone functionality. Teams Phone adds a dial pad to Teams to allow incoming and outgoing telephone calls from anywhere in the world. Teams Phone goes live this summer with desk phones starting to be removed this fall.

  • Classroom, hallway and reception area phones will be replaced with Teams-compatible phones in 2025.

Thank you to the teams involved in these initiatives for helping to push the plan forward. In the coming days, I will also share updates related to Digital Fluency and Student Experience.

4 Seasons of Reconciliation - Spring 2024 (Offered by Indigenous Education and Engagement)

4 Seasons of Reconciliation is a three-hour, 10-module online course that is designed directly in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action. It responds specifically to Call to Action #62. This focuses on the need for institutions like Humber to implement curriculum and resources to help people learn about the historical and current context of Indigenous peoples.

The course is user-friendly and designed to provide context to those less familiar with the themes and historical context embedded in reconciliation. Each short module can be completed at the learner’s pace and provides a mix of learning tools such as PowerPoint, videos, films and quizzes.

Registration is now open for the spring 2024 semester.

Registration closes June 17, 2024.

Here are the highlights of faculty questions from May. These are not necessarily the most frequently asked questions, but helpful for all faculty members.

Question (Saving results of Likert questionnaires): I'm interested in knowing how to create a Likert question in Blackboard for a poll and how to download the results into an Excel sheet. Is there also a summary view of collected responses in Blackboard?

Answer: Blackboard Ultra now supports Forms with Likert question type. Results can be exported to an Excel sheet in the same manner as test answers (Step-by-step instructions on exporting test answers). If you need to know how long each student spent on the questionnaire, you can obtain this information from the Student Activity of the Form from the Gradebook. Follow these step-by-step instructions on how to export Student Activity from Blackboard.

However, there is no visualization of collected responses available in Blackboard Ultra. You will have to create your own view by adding formulas and/or graphs to the exported Excel sheet.

You might also consider using Microsoft Forms to collect and visualize responses instead. By adding a link to the questionnaires created in Microsoft Forms in Blackboard course sites, students can access them easily.

Question (Microsoft Teams LTI): I attempted to schedule Microsoft Teams meetings for the class using the LTI from Blackboard Ultra, but it doesn't seem to save. Am I doing it incorrectly? What's the alternative way to create meetings for the class?

Answer: This has been a recurring issue reported by instructors.

The recommended method for creating and sharing the link to an online synchronous class in Blackboard is to:

  • create an event in Outlook Calendar using your Humber credentials
  • copy the meeting link and post in the Course Content area and Calendar in Blackboard
  • share the link via an Announcement in Blackboard

Please refer to Using Microsoft Teams to Teach for more information. A helpful step-by-step guide is also available. Please note that we will remove the LTI in the near future.

Question (Gradebook): How can I drop the lowest score in the Gradebook?

Answer: You can drop the lowest score from a specific category or subset within a category. To achieve this, navigate to the Gradebook, select 'Overall Grade' for editing, and then choose the category from which you want to drop the lowest score. Click on 'Edit calculation rules'.

This opens a side panel that allows you to drop the lowest or highest scores. For more information, please visit the Anthology website. The same function is also available if you create a Total Calculation column from the Gradebook.

Question (SFQs): I do not remember if I received any messages about SFQs. Where should I look for information?

Answer: SFQs are open to students during a set period each semester, launching about 70 per cent of the way through a course and closing before the final week. To find out when your course would have SFQs, please visit our SFQ date tool. You will receive a message in your Humber email once results are available to you upon completion of your course.

Question (Safe Assign): How can I set up an assignment for SafeAssign?

Answer: To enable SafeAssign for an assignment, click on the Settings icon from the top right corner when you are creating or editing an assignment.

Scroll down the side panel to the bottom where it says “Originality Report”. Click to enable SafeAssign, then save. You must also save the configuration. To check an individual document for Plagiarism, there is also a standalone tool. It is accessible from Books & Tools from the left panel of the course. However, please note that once you submit a document to this tool, you will not be able to delete it from its database.

Question (Akindi): How can I set up the Gradebook using Akindi?

Answer: Akindi is a tool available for certain faculty via LTI. For support, please reach out to Akindi directly. In terms of gradebook setup, you can manually create grade columns and then push grades from Akindi for updates. However, you will still need to set up the Overall Grade.
