The National Day of Mourning is held annually in Canada and other countries around the world on April 28. On this day, workers, families, employers and others honour those workers who have lost their lives, been injured, suffered illness, or experienced work-related tragedies on the job.

Campus flags will be flown at half-mast on April 28 to commemorate this important day.

Let us continue to work together to renew our efforts to continually improve health and safety in the workplace. We must all commit to protect workers and prevent further workplace tragedies.

To observe the day and to learn more about the National Day of Mourning, please visit wsibdayofmourning.ca or the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety.

TTC Conducting Emergency Exercise at the North Campus

TTC and Metrolinx, in cooperation with Humber Polytechnic, will be conducting an emergency exercise at the new Light Rail Transit (LRT) station located on the Humber North Campus.

The exercise will take place on Sunday, April 27, 2025 between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the northeast corner of the North Campus. The main exercise activity will take place between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. All exercise activities will take place either within the station, or on the LRT line just north of Humber Polytechnic in between the Humber and Westmore stations. The main campus is not part of the exercise area and impact to the campus will be minimal.

What You Can Expect To See

Set up for the exercise will start at 6 a.m. on Sunday morning. You may see emergency vehicles, along with TTC and other vehicles on or near campus, particularly at the plaza in the area of Finch and Westmore. The exercise includes approximately 200 participants, including TTC staff, emergency responders, as well as Humber Polytechnic students and staff who will be acting as passengers on the train. All exercise activities and site clean-up should be complete no later than 2 p.m.

The exercise will make use of Parking Lot 5 during the exercise. Therefore, Lot 5 will be unavailable for use during the exercise.

If you have any questions regarding the exercise, please contact Kathy Branton, Manager of Business Continuity and Emergency Management, via email at kathy.branton@humber.ca.

As part of Humber's ongoing leadership and commitment to sustainability, a new free Climate Action MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) is now available to everyone, including Humber employees.

This self-paced, online course empowers learners to take meaningful action on the climate crisis. In just 3-5 hours, participants will explore four key modules covering:

  • Carbon Footprints and Greenhouse Gases
  • Action Planning for Climate Solutions
  • Climate Anxiety and Building Resilience
  • Land-based Learning and Indigenous Knowledge

Learners will finish the course with a personalized Climate Action Plan that aligns their skills and passions with real-world solutions.

This is a great opportunity to deepen your understanding of climate action, contribute to meaningful change, and support Humber’s leadership in sustainability. In fact, we’re proud to share that Humber has been recognized as one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for the tenth year in a row as a reflection of our collective efforts and continued commitment to creating a more sustainable future.

You can learn more about the Climate Action course and enrol at humber.ca/climateactioncourse.

Also, to help spread awareness, you can add a promotional signature to your email. The graphic will be available on the Humber website in the coming days.

Thank you for your continued support in building a more sustainable and climate-conscious world.

The Office of Sustainability is proud to share that Humber Polytechnic has been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for the 10th consecutive year. The designation is presented by MediaCorp Canada to companies who are leading in the creation of a culture of sustainability and the advancement of environmental initiatives.

Over the last decade, we have achieved distinctive milestones and continuously pushed boundaries. Some of the special highlights from the past year include:

  • Signing the Forward Food Pledge, which builds on our commitment to provide fresh and healthy food to the campus community.
  • Expansion of the Friendlier reusable container program into the Culinary Arts program’s culinary labs.
  • Receiving the Zero Carbon Building – Design Standard certification for the Humber Cultural Hub from the Canada Green Building Council.

Dive into this Humber Today story to learn more about the institution’s commitment to sustainability and how environmental projects help us build brilliance.

All of this is only possible thanks to the support of students, staff and faculty who collaborate on the integration of sustainability across all corners of the campus. To celebrate and recognize our community’s efforts, the Office of Sustainability is introducing the Faces of Sustainability campaign.

On a rolling basis, we will be highlighting someone from the Humber community who meaningfully integrates sustainability into their activities at Humber. You can find the stories on the Sustainability website and regularly on Humber’s Office of Sustainability social media and Communique posts. If you would like to join the movement, reach out to sandra.leutri@humber.ca and share how you’ve been championing sustainability at Humber Polytechnic.
