Navigating the death of a student within our community is one of the most difficult situations we may face. In these moments, how we respond speaks volumes about our values and our humanity.

We’re pleased to share that Humber has finalized and published its new Student Death Response Policy and Procedure, which offers a clear and compassionate framework for how Humber supports students, families, staff, and faculty following the passing of a student. This policy was developed with deep care, drawing and expanding upon best practices across the country and informed by the lived experience of those who have supported communities in times of loss.

At its heart, this policy is about compassion in action; ensuring that those impacted are met with dignity, empathy, and timely guidance. It acknowledges that grief does not follow a script, and offers direction for navigating the administrative complexities in a way that centres humanity.

We encourage all members of the Humber community to take a moment to review the Student Death Response Policy and Procedure and become familiar with the steps to take in the unfortunate event that you learn of a student’s passing. Whether you’re a faculty member, staff person, or administrator, knowing how to respond and where to turn can make a meaningful difference for those affected.

This policy is one part of Humber’s broader commitment to building a caring and responsive campus community.

With gratitude to the many contributors across departments and portfolios who shaped this work, and with care for all those who may one day need to draw upon it.

The Student Feedback Questionnaire (SFQ) invites students to provide anonymous feedback on their learning experience in each course every semester. This initiative supports our shared commitment to ensuring the quality of academic programs at Humber. Student feedback is anonymous and confidential.

For those instructors that are in 14-week courses, you should have received a response rate update to your email recently from StudentFeedbackQuestionnaire@sfq.humber.ca (if you do not see this email in your inbox, check your junk or spam folder). This update will not tell you what feedback has been submitted, but will tell you how many students in your course have submitted their SFQ. If you notice that the response rate is low in your course, you are encouraged to post the following announcement (learn more about how to post an announcement in your Blackboard course) in each of your Blackboard courses linked to the SFQ to help remind students to complete them:

Subject Line: Student Feedback Questionnaire (SFQ) Reminder

"As part of the focus on improving the student course experience at Humber Polytechnic, we are seeking your feedback on the courses in which you are currently enrolled. We believe this feedback will help us better understand the student learning experience. Your feedback is extremely important and we appreciate you taking the time to complete the SFQ. Please note that your responses and comments are anonymous. With each completed SFQ, you will also be invited to enter a prize draw; once you submit your SFQ, an invitation to enter the draw will be sent to your email."

In case you missed it, please review these important points on Summer 2025 Student Feedback Questionnaires (SFQs).

Learn more about your SFQ dates, troubleshooting, and many other helpful tips and pieces of information for faculty from Innovative Learning's SFQ News webpage.

The Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE) is pleased to announce the publication of “How do gender dynamics influence the preferences and decisions of an individual in selecting a technical and vocational education and training (TVET) program in Bhutan” Tenzin Choden, MSc.; Pemma Lhaden Lhendup, BA; Sangay Dorji, MSc.

Abstract:

This research explores various factors that influence the preferences and decisions of women when selecting specific Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs, focusing on individual interests, career prospects and employment opportunities, work environment, family and community influence, representation and visibility, and access to information. The study draws on survey data collected from female trainees enrolled in public TVET institutions in Bhutan. The findings provide insights into the multifaceted elements that shape the choices of female trainees, offering valuable information to support efforts aimed at increasing female participation in TVET programs and enhancing their integration into the labour market. By examining these factors, the research contributes to the broader understanding of how to strengthen Bhutan’s initiatives to empower women through TVET and workforce inclusion.

The Student Feedback Questionnaire (SFQ) invites students to provide anonymous feedback on their learning experience in each course every semester. This initiative supports our shared commitment to ensuring the quality of academic programs at Humber. Student feedback is anonymous and confidential.

  • Some students are unaware of what a Student Feedback Questionnaire is and how it functions. To support students who may be unfamiliar with Student Feedback Questionnaires (SFQs) or unsure about their purpose, consider sharing this helpful video with them before they complete the SFQ: Your Voice Matters - Understanding the Student Feedback Questionnaire.
  • You can include the above video link as part of an announcement on Blackboard once the SFQ is available in your course, or you can schedule 20 minutes of in-class time. Including information about the SFQ in your course ensures students understand the importance and intent of the SFQ process, and provides them with time to reflect on the feedback they would like to provide.
  • Also consider sharing an example of how SFQ feedback, or other kinds of feedback, have helped improve course content over time, as an example for students of what to provide feedback on; this also shows students that their voices are heard.
  • Instructors are also strongly encouraged to enable the SFQ in Blackboard. Students will be able to complete the SFQ through a link sent to their emails, but adding the SFQ tool in Blackboard provides additional visibility and accessibility to the SFQ.

As a thank you to faculty, when more than 50 per cent of the students in a faculty member's course complete the SFQ, the faculty member is automatically entered into a raffle for an on-campus food services gift card, or service at the Humber room.
