The Industrial Design degree program at Humber is excited to present their first Virtual Thesis Show. Graduating students prevailed over the challenges due to the COVID19 pandemic and successfully completed their thesis/capstone projects. This year, due to the need for physical distancing, students are showcasing their final-year thesis projects in a Virtual Exhibition format.

This virtual event can be viewed here.

Projects displayed exhibit a diverse range of design solutions in categories such as: Automotive and Transportation Design; Commercial and Industrial Equipment; Medical, Health and Safety Products and finally Recreation and Sports Equipment.

The annual Thesis Show is a yearly event at which successful students get the opportunity to display their projects to their colleagues, the design community, and the media. Last year's event at the Ontario Science Centre was well attended by more than 400 people including design professionals from over 20 industrial design firms in Ontario.

Congratulations to all the capstone students for excellent work and adaptation from a physical Thesis Show to a virtual online Thesis Show. Thanks to capstone faculty, Dennis Kappen, Catherine Chong and Sandro Zaccolo, who stepped up and proposed this idea for a Virtual Thesis Show. With the support of Carl Oliver, the Associate Dean, and the Senior Dean of FAST, Dr. Farzad Rayegani, they worked alongside Black Cat Communications Ltd on a very short time-line to organize this event.

This year's event will continue to bring the design community together as we present a new generation of Canadian designers through a virtual exhibition.

Today is the last day that donations to the SOS Fund will be matched by Humber.

We have helped more than 3,000 students to date, but there are many more who need support. Every dollar truly matters.

We are so thankful for the generosity of the Humber community to date. A big thank you to everyone who has made a donation to support the SOS Fund and help students most impacted by COVID-19. Together, we are making a difference!

As we prepare for the start of classes next week, we want students to know that we are committed to their success. For the first time we will be offering the entire Summer Term online. While this will be a new experience for all of us, what hasn’t changed are the values that shape how we teach and learn together.

Humber's commitment to students in the summer term has now been shared with students. Find the full commitment here: humber.ca/updates/student-commitment.

Individual Tips from Humber Staff

Nivedita Lane, Community & Partnership Development Manager, has been spending time quarantining outside of Toronto. For self-care, Nivedita has been going on short walks over lunch and longer walks in the evenings to take in some fresh air and nature. You can see her beautiful scenery in the above pictures.

“I miss bookstores, libraries, cafes and the best of all these things, book cafes. To self care, I recommend snuggles with a pet friend, a blanket, giant mugs of tea and reading the latest releases and old favourites in e-book format from the Toronto Public Library.”

Capstone Project EXPO is always an exciting event that showcases students’ skills and knowledge learned in their programs. It provides students, faculty and our industry partners the opportunity to come together to celebrate student success. Last year, Humber ICT (Information and Communications Technology) cluster held a very successful EXPO, highlighted in this video.

This year an even more exciting event was planned, including more featured programs and industry partners. Unfortunately, the event was cancelled due to COVID-19. While the cancellation is a disappointment for everyone involved, it could not stop the passion and commitment of Humber ICT students and faculty in completing and presenting their capstone projects. All the projects were completed in their physical isolation and presented virtually. Those projects are featured on our Virtual Expo page https://appliedtechnology.humber.ca/shows.html

Congratulations to all the capstone students and faculty members for excellent work and adaptation from a physical EXPO to a virtual online EXPO. Thanks to a capstone faculty, Timothy Wong, who stepped up and proposed an idea of Virtual EXPO. He worked with his student (Tam) to create a website, collect all the capstone project presentations, working with other capstone faculties and program coordinators.

A team of students (Rahel, Bhavya, Ali, and Patel) from the Project Management Graduate Certificate Program were also involved in creating a management framework using their project management skills for a physical EXPO. Next year, we are looking forward to use this framework to hold an exciting EXPO on campus at the Barrett CTI building.

Enjoy the presentations!
