The Boat - Now open at L Space Gallery

The L Space Gallery is now open for the fall semester! Humber Galleries is excited to announce The Boat, an interactive graphic novel of the acclaimed short story by Nam Le.

This immersive presentation of the visual graphic novel, The Boat by Nam Le, tells the story of 16-year-old Mai, whose parents make the decision to send her alone on a boat after the fall of Saigon. The epic and tragic story resonates with the foundational narrative of the Australian-Vietnamese diaspora including that of author Nam Le’s own family. Similarly, New York based Australian illustrator Matt Huynh’s parents left Vietnam for Australia in the years following the fall of Saigon.

Matt Huynh said, “The Boat is the most urgent and immediate comic I've ever made - a work of a kind I've never quite seen before and a unique chance to engage an issue so entangled with my own life. It's a work that deals not in metaphor or analogy, not exclusively fiction or history and impossible to segment artist from subject. This resulting work is proof of my life, luck, of a country's compassion for people in the most vulnerable of circumstances over 40 years ago and our urgent, unavoidable connection to today's asylum seekers and refugees.”

Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber are committed to promoting a learning, working and living environment that are free from all forms of discrimination and harassment. As part of our commitment, we are hosting the our 4th annual Take Back the Night program and march on Thursday, September 26, 2019 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Barrett Centre for Teaching and Innovation (CTI) at the North Campus.

A complimentary shuttle bus will be leaving Lakeshore Campus at 4 p.m. in front of the Lakeshore Residence. Round trip will be provided.

Take Back the Night is a movement that was started by women who had experienced sexual assault. Women and their allies marched and participated through rallies, marches and candlelight vigils, to denounce all forms of sexual violence. Today, Take Back the Night recognizes that people of all genders can experience sexual assault and other forms of sexual violence. However, women, particularly women with disabilities, indigenous and racialized women, low-income women, and trans women are more likely to experience such violence.

Everyone is welcome to attend and march in solidarity with survivors of sexual assault and other forms of sexual violence. We encourage self-identified survivors to take the lead at the front of the march if they would like, with allies and advocates marching in support behind them.

We invite you to join us at the pre-events to create signs. Materials will be available. The TBTN Sign Making events are:
