Centre for Urban Ecology

Thank you to everyone who came out on Monday to join the Humber Arboretum in celebrating the launch of our first Strategic Plan and vision! The event featured wonderful music and hors d'oeuvres supplied by Humber College students, and inspiring words from the Humber Arboretum's friends and partners.

For those who missed the celebration, you can read all about the Humber Arboretum and Centre for Urban Ecology's 2019-2024 Strategic Plan on our website. You can also read our newly defined vision, mission, and values here.

At the heart of our plan are three strategic priorities: World-ready Citizens, Healthy Communities, and Thriving Nature. Watch for upcoming news here on the Communiqué and through the Humber Arboretum's website and social media channels as we take action on those priorities and work toward our vision for the future.

I thank the many individuals who contributed their time and energy to the development of this Plan and invite everyone to join us in bringing this vision to life. If the vision outlined here speaks to you, we invite you to find your own inspiration in it, and your own role. Connect with us, and discover how you can become part of the Humber Arboretum’s future and how this future can be part of our collective future.

We look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,

Alexandra (Alix) Link

Post-secondary studies can be a challenging time for students. Generally there are signs that a student may be struggling long before a situation escalates to a crisis. Faculty and staff are well-positioned to recognize behaviour that may indicate that a student is in distress and may require help. Being able to recognize the signs of distress and being willing to address your concerns directly are critical first steps in assisting the student.

Remember there are various resources and supports on campus that are here to help staff and faculty navigate students in distress.

STUDENT SUPPORT & INTERVENTION COORDINATORS (SSIC)

Consult a Student Support & Intervention Coordinator if you require consultation on a concerning student behaviour you’ve observed. The Student Support and Intervention Team may be activated to respond to complex student related concerns.

Are you preparing an REB application this fall?

Updated Tri-Council Policy Statement: TCPS 2 (2018) and Course on Research Ethics (CORE)

Welcome to fall, an especially busy time across the college. And this includes research, as applications to the Humber REB are growing in number and complexity. As part of the Humber REB application process, researchers must complete the TCPS 2 and submit the certificate with the application.

This summer, after extensive public consultation, the Secretariat for the Panel on Research Ethics (a Government of Canada agency) based in Ottawa, released the TCPS 2 (2018). It replaces the TCPS 2 (2014) as the official research ethics policy of the federal research agencies (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC). The Secretariat is now developing a new CORE tutorial that will incorporate many of the changes in the new Policy. A summary of the revisions published in TCPS (2018) is available in the Highlights of Changes.

No fundamental changes were made to the Policy. The three core principles – Respect for Persons, Concern for Welfare, and Justice – continue to be the foundation of both the new Policy and CORE.

If you are registering to complete the certificate, you will be able to access the existing CORE modules through the new TCPS website or directly through this link.

The Secretariat cannot yet confirm when all the modules will be revised. Until then, applicants simply follow the current posted material. No one will be asked to redo any portion of the tutorial when all the modules have been updated.

If you completed the TCPS 2 (2014), your certificate is still valid and does not need to be redone.

For further clarification, please contact the Secretariat directly: 613.996.0072; secretariat@srcr-scrr.gc.ca

With the departure of Lara Hof from the Office of Student Conduct (OSC), Andrea Campea, currently the Acting Manager of Residence Life, has been appointed Acting Manager, Office of Student Conduct. Andrea has an extensive history in student conduct administration, currently sits on the Student Support & Intervention Team, and with ease will be able to make the transition to the Office of Student Conduct. Andrea and Lara were fortunate to connect and transition prior to Lara's departure. Andrea will officially take over the role in OSC on Monday, September 23. Andrea will also retain several of her responsibilities within the Residence Life portfolio, drawing on the support of the Residence Life Coordinators for specific tasks, and will continue in the role as Interim Manager.

I’d like to once again thank Lara for her leadership and commitment to supporting Humber students and express thanks to Andrea for her openness to take on new responsibilities over the next few months.
