The Centre for Human Rights, Equity & Diversity would like to thank the Humber community for participating in the Knowledge Cafés and for providing input on the revised definitions of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Humber College. The Centre will review the definitions annually as human rights terms are constantly evolving.

Provided below (and attached) are the revised definitions for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion at Humber College.

Definitions

Equity
The principle of equity recognizes that equity-seeking groups experience unfair treatment in services, programs and employment. At Humber, equity means applying specific measures and practices to achieve equality of opportunities and outcomes for all.

Diversity
Diversity refers to the intersectionality of social and political identities that embody different worldviews, knowledges, and experiences. Humber embraces the diversity that exists in the identities of students and employees from local and global communities.

Inclusion
The principle of inclusion refers to the active and intentional engagement of people in all their intersecting social and political identities. At Humber, this engagement is grounded in respect, and all members of the college community are recognized as valued contributors. Inclusion enriches innovation, sustainability and excellence in curricula, research, programs and services.

The Faculty of Applied Sciences & Technology (FAST), along with Community Outreach & Workforce Development (COWD), is pleased to announce the successful launch of the Home Efficiency Animator Trainer (H.E.A.T) program, in partnership with the City of Toronto and Natural Resources Canada.

The Home Efficiency Animator Training (HEAT) is a two-day, 14-hour, no-cost, capacity and community building program focused on best practices in residential energy conservation. This workforce development opportunity will support members of our local community to grow their technical expertise while building environmental stewardship skills that benefit the broader community. The program targets mid-career professionals interested in pursuing a career in climate action, green home technology, residential energy conservation, sustainability and/or building sciences who are looking for upskilling or re-training in these areas. All participants will leave with a Certificate of Participation from Humber College and information regarding further education opportunities in these fields.

We are very excited about this capacity and resume-building opportunity for local residents as it supports pathways to further education, training and workforce opportunities, and is in keeping with our strategic priority of providing Accessible Education.

The first round of training took place at City Hall on July 13-14, followed by a second round on August 12-13. The upcoming winter cohorts will take place in February 2020.

Participants will leave the two-day training with the following:

  • Greater technical understanding on topics including energy retro-fitting practices, deep-impact energy savings, Natural Resources Canada home efficiency learning outcomes
  • Soft skill training, including motivational interviewing
  • Ability to communicate the social and economic benefits of greener home retrofits to community residents
  • Environmental stewardship skills to advocate for pro-social interventions and climate action engagement in their local communities
  • Certificate of Participation from Humber College, a valuable resume-enhancing opportunity for those looking to enter the workforce
  • Takeaway information about pathways into future career and educational opportunities

Special thanks to Humber faculty member Kirk Johnson, who is leading the development of the H.E.A.T training.

Questions about the technical training can be directed to Anureet Jauhal, Manager of Community and Industry Projects (FAST): anureet.jauhal@humber.ca

Questions about community workforce development initiatives or referrals for the program can be sent to Nivedita Lane, Manager, Community & Partnership Development (COWD): nivedita.lane@humber.ca

Please let us know if you are interested in getting involved in any way.
