As we continue to work and learn at home, it’s important to stay connected to our colleagues and our community. To help keep us all connected, we created the #HumberAtHome series. We want to know about how you are taking care of your well-being right now, how your teams are adding a bit of fun into your interactions, and which resources are helping you.

Here are some examples of what members of the Humber community are doing to bring their community together:

Applied Research & Innovation

Chair

This plain desk chair will be getting a make-over this Easter weekend when Camila Perez Pena, Project Coordinator in ARI refurbishes it to create a more stylish work-from-home environment. Stay tuned and follow @HumberResearch for the results!

Derek Stockley, Principal of the Lakeshore Campus acknowledges that this has not been an easy time and wants to thank the community for their patience, resilience and perseverance throughout this difficult time. View his message here. Stay home and stay safe.

Challenges during COVID-19 means students need to be flexible, adapt to new teaching methods and support all colleagues. Strategic Management students Chiara Carrozzi, Matt Stoddart, Brittiney-Baguio Snow and Jessica Cole exemplified this during their “virtual in-class” Case Study using Blackboard Collaborate. To help keep everyone connected, the Faculty of Business has compiled a list of positive feedback from professors who have taken full advantage of the available technology and transitioned from in-class to online.

"Just one out of 42 faced technical issues. I was able to help."
- Bhupinder Malhotra, Human Resource Management System (HRMS) Change Agent

"My virtual class went well last week. Considering it's an 8 a.m. class there was still an average turnout and the lesson went smoothly."
- Klaudia Capalbo, Fashion Arts and Business Professor

"My colleagues have been really supportive to give a helping hand whenever required. My online session with my classes went absolutely great this week. The transition has been really smooth so far."
- Mandeep Sidhu, Economics Professor

"I just completed back-to-back online classes for FUND program. Engagement was a bit of a struggle but attendance and participation were better than I thought. Overall a positive experience."
- Peter Hoppe, Fundraising Management Professor

"Online teaching is going extremely well. I am in touch with my students 24/7, being extremely positive, created extra materials, extra practice tests, etc."
- Beata Cioncka, Accounting Professor

"Online class yesterday went well - but tough start-up issues. We had a guest speaker for the first hour of class, a short break and then lecture. It’s hard to gauge dialogue, questions or discussions but we muddled through. Class presentations start next week, should be fun."
- Wendy Feldman, Adjunct Instructor

"Collaboration is great, although I miss the interaction. I have also encouraged students to use the discussion board as a way to communicate with each other."
- Janice Charko, Accounting Professor

"Thanks for all the help and support. There are a million "meetings" happening every day between different members of the team and when this is done you will have an ARMY of seasoned on-line teaching pros! I just wanted to let you know that we can see and feel the support and that's a huge help."
- Janet Latremouille, Hospitality Instructor

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Program

The Government of Canada has announced that international students whose in-class courses are being moved to an online-only format because of COVID-19 will still be eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Program.

This includes students who have a study permit or who have been approved for a study permit for a program starting in May or June 2020, but who are unable to travel to Canada at this time due to travel restrictions. International students in this situation may begin their classes while outside Canada, and may complete up to 50 per cent of their program while outside the country if they cannot travel here sooner.

This means that both new and current students at Humber who study online in the summer 2020 term will have those studies ‘count’ towards the amount of time required to qualify for a Canadian post-graduate work permit.

Students planning on starting their program with Humber in May 2020, will need to upload their study permit or letter of introduction to humber.ca/myhumber by April 27 to register.

Questions can be submitted to Humber Global using this contact form.

Student Support Initiatives

New support initiatives are being launched this week to provide students with direct support and/or opportunities to connect and engage.

Get a Call or Drop-in OnlineStudent Success Call Backs: Would a student like to talk to a staff member from Humber? A team of student services staff are available to call students and talk about how they are doing, listen to their concerns, answer questions, direct them to resources, or provide a warm referral to a service that can offer support. Appointments can be made here.

Virtual Drop-ins: On the @lifeathumber social accounts, there will be a schedule of events, skill development sessions, lunch breaks, and other opportunities for students to gather digitally, learn something valuable, participate in an activity or just hangout. Keep checking back on the @lifeathumber social accounts for the schedule. The first two sessions are:

  • Thursday, April 9 at 12 p.m. – How to manage stress
  • Monday, April 13 at 12 p.m. – Calm and confident test preparation

Following advice from Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, on April 3, 2020, the Ontario government updated the list of essential businesses that can remain open. The restrictions are aimed at further reducing contact between people and stopping the spread of COVID-19.

As a result, Humber is further limiting the number of essential services to operate on campus.

The services that will remain open (or be available on-call) are:

  • Residence (Building T – North Campus), with limited food services until April 18
  • Cleaning limited to certain/occupied areas only
  • Public Safety guards and services to secure Humber’s premises
  • Facilities Management staff will be available (on-call) for continued/safe operations of Humber premises, and
  • Mailroom (on-call basis)

The services that may operate on campus due to essential need, have protocols in place that are in line with guidance from public health authorities including advice, recommendations and instructions on physical distancing, cleaning and disinfecting.

Under this revised directive, if someone needs to access the college premises, the current process requires employees to secure approval from their director or senior dean. The director or senior dean must contact Public Safety at publicsafety@humber.ca to provide rationale for the visit to ensure access to campus would be permitted.

Students who are picking up technology needed to complete their studies can still continue to come to campus but only if the pick-up is prearranged.
