When Do I Register?

  • Registration opens on Monday, December 2, 2024
  • The deadline to register is April 30, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.

The City of Toronto is currently seeking input on actions under consideration for the next Action Plan of the TransformTO Net Zero Strategy, the City of Toronto’s community-wide climate strategy. The Net Zero Strategy has a target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions, community-wide, by 2040. The next Action Plan for the Strategy will cover the period 2026 to 2030, including the interim target of a 65 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 (from the 1990 baseline).

Residents are invited to take a survey to share about actions they are taking, actions they are not taking, barriers they may be facing and supports that might help them overcome those barriers.

The survey takes about 10-15 minutes to complete and it will be open until January 31.

In September, Respondus was disabled from Blackboard due to required updates from the vendor. We are pleased to share that the Respondus Lockdown Browser will be enabled in Blackboard on Monday, November 25.

Humber ITS and Innovative Learning have been closely monitoring this situation with Respondus since the tool was temporarily disabled in September 2024. ITS can now verify that the required software updates meet Humber's requirements and have cleared the tool to be re-activated in Blackboard.

We thank you for your patience and understanding of this situation. For when Respondus returns on November 25, here are some helpful resources to set up Respondus for your assessments:

The end of daylight savings time means the sun sets much earlier in the day. With less daylight hours, there is an increase in road hazards for both pedestrians and drivers, particularly during the late afternoon and evening. The City of Toronto notes that the number of collisions involving pedestrians is about 30 per cent greater during the evening commute hours from the months of November to March. Whether you are a driver, pedestrian, or cyclist, we all play a role in roadway safety.

When driving on or off campus, keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Obey speed limits and stop signs.
  • Approach all crosswalks, intersections and transit stops with caution; always look out for pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers.
  • When making a turn, slow down, look in all directions and signal.
  • Use your vehicle’s visor to reduce glare from the setting sun.
  • Avoid distractions: store your cell phone away so you are not tempted to use it while driving.
  • Pay extra attention when reversing your vehicle.

As a pedestrian walking along roads and in parking lots, practice the following:

  • Obey signs and signals, and follow the rules of the road.
  • Always walk on sidewalks and designated walking paths.
  • Use designated crosswalks and look both ways before crossing. Make eye contact with any drivers in the area before stepping onto the road.
  • Be mindful of curbs and other tripping hazards.
  • Avoid distractions: avoid cell phone use when walking.

We are excited to share the inaugural 2023–2024 Humber Polytechnic Well-being Strategy Annual Report.

Since its launch in 2023, Humber’s Well-being Strategy has been dedicated to fostering success for learners and employees by embedding health and well-being into every aspect of our campus culture. Guided by the four dimensions of well-being—financial, social, physical, and mental health—this work would not be possible without the contributions of our Humber Polytechnic partners, whose efforts have and continue to positively impact our community.

As we continue with the implementation phase of the strategy, there is still much to accomplish. We look forward to collaborating across the campus to ensure Humber Polytechnic remains a place where both learners and employees can thrive.

REB Protocol 0410 (Bridging the Gap: Investigating the Role of GenAI in Building a Culture of Effective Assessment) was approved by the REB on October 22, 2024. The participant recruitment methodology approved by the REB includes the use of the Communiqué to publish a survey link along with an invitation for interested participants to complete this survey.

The first Communiqué posting with a link to the survey was published on Monday, November 11, 2024. The Research Team advised the REB that on November 12, 2024 it discovered that there was a technical issue with this survey link as a result of which participants would have been able to view responses submitted by other participants. Although this would raise data privacy concerns, the REB has been assured that no actual participant data was compromised as no responses had been submitted to the survey.

The Research Team further advised the REB that upon becoming aware of the issue it immediately adopted corrective actions. These actions consisted of the creation of a new survey link and the disabling of the previous survey link. Future postings in the Communiqué related to this project will contain the new and secure survey link. The REB is satisfied that as a result of these corrective actions, there is now no risk of participant data being compromised.

The REB wishes to note that the actions of the research team in this instance are consistent with best recommended practices. Upon becoming aware of the issue, the team notified the REB and independently adopted the necessary corrective actions. The REB commends the team on these efforts and wishes to remind the Humber research community of the importance of constant monitoring of data gathering and data analysis activities in order to ensure that potential problems are quickly identified and addressed. Researchers should, as in the present case, make immediate contact with the REB to advise of any issues experienced during the execution of the research which might create a risk of harm for research participants.

Should any member of the Humber community have questions on this matter, kindly make contact with the Chair, Audel Cunningham at audel.cunningham@humber.ca.

At the Centre for Innovation in Health and Wellness (CIHW), we are proud to highlight one of our current projects that is seeking to improve rehabilitation outcomes and enhance quality of life for those affected by acquired brain injuries and other cognitive illnesses.

Nearly 4 per cent of Canadians live with an acquired brain injury, resulting from illness, medical conditions, or trauma (Brain-Injury-Canada). By 2031, traumatic brain injury is projected to be one of the most common neurological conditions in Canada, alongside Alzheimer’s disease, other dementias, and epilepsy (Statistics - Brain Injury Canada).

Those affected with brain injuries may experience multiple barriers including mental health challenges, with some requiring the specialized care available at Adult Day Centres (ADC). These ADCs, offered by community organizations, provide programs tailored for adults with acquired brain injuries, as well as those with dementia or other conditions.

In May 2024, CIHW partnered with Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities (SCHC) to explore potential collaborative projects on acquired brain injuries. SCHC, which provides services to individuals with acquired brain injuries and other cognitive illnesses, envisioned integrating Virtual Reality (VR) into Acquired Brain Injury and Adult Day Centre programs.

Recognizing the potential for an invaluable and innovative student learning experience, CIHW submitted a proposal to Co-operative Education and Work Integrated Learning Canada (CEWIL) for funding. Our application was successful, and in September of this year, CIHW connected students from Humber’s Research Analyst Program with SCHC to begin this project.

The students have been deeply involved in this project, gaining hands-on experience in various aspects of project development, including needs assessment, program design, content creation, technology integration, and evaluation. They have worked closely with SCHC to design and implement VR training programs, collecting feedback from end-users and stakeholders to refine the content and delivery methods. This experience has provided them with valuable skills in VR technology, software development, healthcare delivery, and client-centred care, making them job-ready and well-prepared for their future careers.

This project showcases the power of bringing together health, research and innovation to create tangible and actionable solutions for complex healthcare challenges. It not only highlights the impact of cutting-edge technology in healthcare but also underscores the importance of partnerships and hands-on learning experiences in preparing the next generation of emerging leaders.

Together, we can create a healthier future for all.
