Humber Polytechnic is delighted to welcome three new Governors to serve on Humber’s Board. Taking on these roles are:

  • Phil Graham, Assistant Deputy Minister, Strategic Policy and Planning, Ontario Ministry of Education
  • Jane Mallen, Assistant Deputy Attorney General, Policy Division, Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General
  • Gillian Steeve, Assistant Deputy Minister, Ontario Ministry of Long-Term Care

These individuals bring a collective depth and breadth of experience and expertise to our work and Institution. The Board and Humber’s leadership team are laser-focused on delivering unparalleled student experiences and working towards increasing productivity and strengthening our economy.

I would like to thank the Ontario government for their swift action to address the Board’s vacancies. When the entire post-secondary education sector is navigating unprecedented levels of uncertainty, these appointments ensure that the business of Humber Polytechnic can move forward without delay or distraction.

In the meantime, our core business of providing exceptional polytechnic education and preparing students for the jobs of today, and the challenges of tomorrow, continues thanks to our incredibly talented, dedicated and resilient faculty, support staff and administrators.

The Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE) is pleased to announce the publication of "The Role of Self-Compassion in the Lived Experiences of Service Providers Working in Canadian Cancer Support Programs" by Karimah Kiranda, MSc, Unnati Modi, BA; Danielle Silva, MSc, Cristina Alexandra Guerrero, PhD, and Tina Lackner, MSc.

Abstract:

Working and providing cancer support services is both challenging and rewarding, yet the lived experiences of the personnel providing such services remain overlooked. It is vital to address the experiences of service providers to better understand the nature of their work and how it may impact their well-being. This paper explores the lived experiences of cancer support service providers, focusing on how they conceptualize and practice self-compassion in their workplace. A qualitative approach centred on phenomenological hermeneutics was utilized to collect in-depth interview data from service providers working in cancer support centres across southwestern Ontario, Canada.

The research team used descriptive and narrative analysis to analyze the interview data and produced the following four themes: 1) acknowledging personal limits as a form of self-compassion; 2) organizational support; 3) emotional environment; and 4) prioritized self-care. Recommendations include more comprehensive support systems for service providers, especially if they may be experiencing secondary trauma or compassion fatigue. The findings gleaned from the service providers contribute valuable considerations for both the cancer care workplace and postsecondary institutions. While the findings provide real-life examples of effective support for service providers in the workplace, they also provide important considerations for post-secondary programming that include strategies for balancing empathetic service delivery with exercising self-compassion.

Purchasing Services would like to remind staff to review the Purchasing Procedures regarding the proper process for disposing of surplus or obsolete equipment. Following this process ensures that assets are tracked properly, conflicts of interest are avoided, and we uphold the principles of sustainability and value for money.

 In summary:

  1. Departments/Faculties must communicate surplus or obsolete items to other budget holders, allowing them the opportunity to utilize the items before disposal or sale.
  2. Purchasing Services will assist in this process by posting items to the Communiqué.
  3. The sale of surplus or obsolete equipment must be conducted via public auction, tender, or quotation.
    • Purchasing Services will lead this process by posting assets to GovDeals (except for computer-related goods, which should be directed to ITS, and furniture, which should be directed to Rebecca Muyal).
  4. The disposal of surplus or obsolete items is the responsibility of Facilities Management and Purchasing Services, in collaboration with the Vice President, Administration, and CFO (or designate).
  5. Every effort must be made to avoid sending items to landfill.
  6. Any funds recovered from the sale of surplus or obsolete equipment will be returned to the college’s central account.

To post an asset for sale, please complete the Asset Disposal Form (attached) and send to purchasing@humber.ca, along with photos of the asset. Before posting the asset for public auction, please obtain the current book value from treasury@humber.ca to determine the list price. Note that assets cannot be removed once posted for auction.

Please contact purchasing@humber.ca if you have any questions or require assistance.

DICE ASSESSMENT: A tool to help prepare students with disabilities for the workplace

Students with disabilities may need specific supports to prepare for their work placement or new jobs.

The Disability Impact on Career & Employment (DICE) assessment can help students:

  • Identify the limitations, strengths and skills they bring to the workplace
  • Discover key components of a compatible career
  • Determine workplace accommodations that will work best, and how to speak to an employer about them

For more information about how DICE can help, please encourage students to contact Elaine, Student Success Advisor, Academic & Career Services at elaine.belanger-porter@humber.ca

Additional career resources are available on the Advising & Career Services website.
